^^ Nope. Still no MMS. Maybe someone will write an app to do it, but it's doubtful considering the current restrictions of the SDK. It's easy enough to send a MMS through email, they just need to have a way that converts an incoming MMS into an email or something.

The 3G speeds will be nice, as will the GPS. With the drop in price, I think it's worth it to get the new model if the GPS works as advertised. I'm not totally sold on the look and slight increase in dimensions, but I thought I wouldn't like the iPhone til I actually started using it.

Apple never give us everything we want.....

It has enough to get me to buy this one. If it just had 3G id probobly would have still gotten it.

Well its only 0.1 thicker not too much. I think those edges will make it even out though.

I dont know if ill get the white or the black though.......

So do you think I schould get a iPhone over a Sidekick Slide?

The iPhone...defenitly. Hands down, much better phone.

If I had 200+ bucks to drop on this thing, I would totally get it, but I don't. The new updates really are helpful, the 3G should help loads. Looking forward to messing around with it in person.

On the "negative" side...the price of the data package will increase $10, from $20 to $30, for the 3G iPhones. $30 is the set price for all of AT&T's other 3G data packages, so it's not out of line, but some people are upset over the increase.

I personally don't mind too much, since the substantial increase in speed over the data networks is worth it if I need to get information while out and about. I have Wifi at work and home, but anywhere else is a crapshoot, and EDGE is not reliable in terms of speed.

The real question for me is did they add MMS to the updated iPhone? Thats one of my big turnoffs. Besides that, it looks to be nothing more than a software update and a newish shell.

Most definitely more than a software upgrade! 3G is hardware, so is the GPS. The software upgrade is available for both iPhone and iPhone 3G. The shell is new as well yes, without the recessed headphone jack and it also has better speaker quality then the last generation of iPhones.

The SDK doesn't have limitations against MMS messaging- especially with the new push notifications. There is now no issue with making an MMS app for the iPhone.

Great phone, amazing price... what more could you really ask for?

One other thing people have been complaining about is that you have to activate with a 2 year contract in the store before you can walk out with an iPhone. Looks like you can't jailbreak the iPhone to use on different carriers anymore. By restricting iPhone purchases to in-store purchases only, and doing the activation in-store, Apple was able to reduce the price by $200 by subsidies from AT&T.

Cool features:

GPS tied in with Google Maps (the service is free, and you don't have to pay extra like other carriers). Suppose you are walking down the street and want to find some restaurants nearby. Google Maps tied into the GPS functionality (Core Location) can help find it. I think there's also a functionality where it can find where your contacts are. iStalker application, anyone?

Applications on the iPhone. The coolest thing I thought was Cro-Magon Rally from Pangea Software. It's a go-kart racing game, and uses the tilt sensor of the iPhone to function like a steering wheel. Very Wii-like... The medical software demoed was pretty cool.

Microsoft Exchange support. Finally push email on the iPhone. Even syncs contacts, calendar, and notes along with email. I use Mail2Web Live, which has Exchange support for my Palm Centro. All I have to do is set up my mail2web account on the iPhone and boom. Everything's synced. I thought it was funny when they said "ActiveSync" as "ActiveStink" initially...

The price drop, tied in with Exchange support, and the ability to add applications, along with the excellent OS and Safari, is sufficient for me to buy one.

...and this is why I shouldn't have bought the 1st Generation iPhone when it first came out. I knew they would have improved it somehow in the near future! I'm a sucker for Apple products (I actually want to buy MacBook Air since I'm always in between classes. Aside from the obvious things of it not having that much memory space, does anyone who owns the MacBook Air like it or would recommend it?) and I can't wait to get this new iPhone!

Bah, Nokia N95's are much nicer (in my opinion anyway). Apart from the huge price, a big turn off for me is the aspect ratio of the screen. Basically it isn't at the standard 16:9 ratio used by most films. Sounds silly, but it means you have to crop the film or strech it. Which sort of defys the object of having a phone to play films. The N95 has a great screen for watching films, and it comes with Spiderman 3 on it XD

So that's why you liked the Spiderman movie?

Go'on boy!

Anyway, I may get an iPhone later this year. My pocket pc phone is kinda crappy but i did find some translation software and skype works on it; so it may serve a purpose in Europe.. although the phone won't work (Crappy Sprint). When more software comes out for it, I may consider switching... but I'm not wild about changing cell companies.

^^I have an N95 and i'm growing tired of it rather quickly. I've loaded it with some music, TV shws and photos and now it's really unresponsive. It takes about 10 seconds from pressing a button to getting it to do what I want, which doesn'tsound like much but trust me it's annoying when friends of mine have phones (the iPhone included) that work perfectly under similar conditions.

I've been looking at a few articles about the costs of the new 3G iphone. If you have one of the old phones, I would do research before trading up since AT&T is going to stick it to you on the increased cost of the data plan and you have to pay for text messages now since it isn't included in the plan.

I also read some analyst's blog that said we may see the iPhone on different carriers sooner since Apple is not doing the revenue sharing plan with AT&T. He mentioned that since the new deal is similar to a traditional carrier deal, there's not much keeping Apple from getting out of its exclusivity deal and offering it to other companies.

Either way, I'm going to wait it out and put that money towards a new Macbook Pro.

Every 3G phone costs that much AT&T raised the plan price 10 dollars a month, and nearly every 3G phone plan is about the same price now.

So really, any phone you buy now that's even remotely close to what the iPhone can do will cost you about that amount in the long run.

^ Any phone with a data plan is going to cost you over $1000 over the course of two years.

I pay around $70 after taxes for my current iPhone plan...so assuming it's simply a $10 extra amount for 3G, that's $80. $80x24=$1920 over the course of two years + $200 for the phone. Definitely not cheap.

$69 before taxes, so you're right, probably around 75/80 dollars.

After you add extra $10 a month, the iPhone comes out to be 40 dollars more then last gen's iPhone- but the difference is you're paying that over a long time- you don't have to spend the extra $240 on the spot.

All I know is I'd rather spend 10 bucks a month then spend $440 on one day.

For those of you who know me and these new style phones...should I get one?

I'll be ready for a new phone this fall, and I've realized as I sit in the parks by myself in air conditioned places while the baby naps that it would be nice to be able to go online.

Basically, I'd like a phone that's:

- Easy and decent online

- Small

- Good at text messaging

- Nice Camera

I don't care about listening to music on phones at all.

Help me!
