    • It could use some new paint here and there...

    • There are worse-maintained rides than Space Mountain...

As explained in another thread, originally two dates (January 14 and 15th) showed Space Mountain on the refurbishment schedule. First, there was a rumor that Rockin' Space Mountain may come back. But then, on a recent visit, there was duct tape on the rocket rails and paint scrapes everywhere.

Here is a video by break09 that explains my point. When the ride 101'd and the rockets were being pushed back down to the station, the wheels were making a loud squeaking noise. It sounded very painful to the ears:

So, who thinks that Space Mountain could use a refurbishment?

EDIT: You can now talk about ANY ride at the Disneyland Resort that needs a refurbishment.

Rides make noise, doesn't mean its good or bad. Are you sure that the sound is coming from the actual wheels on the train or the drive tires?

I'm seriously just asking. Does it always make that sound or can you just notice is now that the audio show effects are off?

I've never been on Space Mountain where I thought something wasn't being maintained properly.

Space Mountain just came off an extensive rehab back in 2005, I don't think it really needs ANOTHER rehab so soon. As Mike said, rides make noise, some mischief-making guests may vandalize a rail or two, but that doesn't mean "Close the ride down for a few months."

Yeah, I don't think Space Mountain needs to close for another two years. It's just a squeaky sound. I don't think the GP cares much if the car squeaks at one point.

Off topic, Space Mountain is personally my favorite coaster at DLR, it's so much fun!

I've never noticed anything major that pops up when I think if the ride needs touchups, and I'm assuming most other people feel that way. All the little details will eventually be fixed when the ride goes down for scheduled rehabs.

I <3 Space Mtn...

After watching the video I was thinking that those sounds are just the normal sounds the trains make at low speeds. These would be covered up by all the atmospheric noise they pump into the station during regular operation.

If you pay close attention, it only makes that noise when the trains are being pushed not when they are moving on their own. I'm thinking it has something to do with the lubricant in the wheel bearings. Reminds me of how you can hear squeeky brakes on a car moreso when at a lower speed than at high speed.

The handle bars on Space are made of a tough foam and guests pick at them. When a chunk comes out, more guests pick and the chunk gets bigger. Once it gets too big they cover it with a black tape. Its unrealistic to expect them to replace the bar every time a chunk is missing.

It is the actual wheel mike, there aren't any drive tires in Space Mountain. And when the audio is off you can hear it the whole time on the ride. It is a little annoying, but thats all. You are correct in saying that it is being properly maintained.

But the ride is fine. It doesn't need a referb.
