thrillrideseeker Posted March 23, 2008 Posted March 23, 2008 I'm not saying you guys don't enjoy what you're doing, I'm just saying you probably won't get transferred to the ride you want if you're standing there all day like "Oh, man, I hate working this ride, I wish I was on a coaster". I get what you are saying. I always acted excited when I was working at Shrek, I just wanted to get away from spieling to people over and over and over. I really wanted a roller coaster because that is where I feel more comfortable working, I am more motivated when I am some where I enjoy. Anyways... Congrats on your job at Cedar Point!! I am sure you are going to enjoy it! I mean you were happy just working at a food thingy... How excited are you to be working on the train? I really don't care if you make it or not to be honest I will just be glad to not have you posting about your new , amazing, better then the last job every 3 months. It just seems ironic that you can imagine being in the same place for 13 years, when you can't stay at the same job for 3 months. Again I am just saying, everyone deserves to have the chance to do what they want for a living so all the best to you. I made it through 13 years of school before I am sure I can do it again. Plus I know it will be worth it in the end. ~Matthew
Wes Posted March 23, 2008 Posted March 23, 2008 Oh another thread about thrillrideseeker's jobs? Awesome. The last one was so great too. http://www.themeparkreview.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=38952 I just want to say I am eerily sort of prophetic in my joke postings. I think next week he'll decide he wants to be a senator or a brain surgeon. Have fun working at Cedar Point, Kings Island, Geauga's waterpark and Stricker's Grove this summer! You'll probably save enough money to study to be a astronaut-oil baron-detective!

SharkTums Posted March 23, 2008 Author Posted March 23, 2008 I think you guys are being a little rude to thrillrideseeker here. At least he's only 19 and hopping from job to job. You guys gave nothing but support to a 26 year old on the board who gave up a real job, apartment, car, etc to go be a ride op at Disney!!!
lapseofreason Posted March 23, 2008 Posted March 23, 2008 ^^I was just going to say that... I don't think you're going to get away from spieling at CP, LOL. On the other hand, in my case, if there's one thing I've always wanted to do, it's spiel... 42 more days

What Wes have you never changed jobs? I mean let me guess you were born doing what you do now? I think you guys are being a little rude to thrillrideseeker here. Wes Posted March 24, 2008 Posted March 24, 2008 So Wes do you really have to be an a$$hole about everything? I mean OMG I am going to work at Cedar Point...and? What Wes have you never changed jobs? I mean let me guess you were born doing what you do now? I'm less complaining about the switching of the jobs and more about the lack of realism. It's true you passed over a college scholarship to join Disney, you've now been employed at three different amusement parks and a fourth coming up soon. That's within the span of a year. You also have said you want to study for a career in: roller coaster designing, being a CSI, being an actor, and now a plastic surgeon. NONE of those occupations are easy, in fact every single one of them is quite difficult in terms of either the amount of learning, the relative number of jobs in each industry, and the demand for such jobs. Just because you go to school for a required amount of years doesn't mean you are guaranteed to settle into the profession of your dreams. You've also shown qualities that show you quit when things aren't going your way. Disney wasn't good enough, Universal wasn't good enough, Busch wasn't good enough. I know you are young, and young people do go through a fair amount of job switching, but it honestly seems like you'd rather bail than try to improve and make the best of your work situations. At a certain point, someone is going to look at your resumé and ask why you only work for a couple months at each location. All along, you've posted here, and people who have had similar situations have given you tons of good advice, but it seems to fall on deaf ears. Just think, if you had taken the initial advice many gave, you would be in college with a scholarship working towards whatever degree you wanted, as opposed to having to go back in the fall and have you or your family pay for years of schooling. From my perspective, it seems like you are either emotionally immature or at least partially delusional as to what it takes to make a living in a real world environment. I do wish you the best of luck at Cedar Point and wherever else life takes you, but I really hope you take a step back and examine the realities of your situation, and choose the path that best suits you in the long term.
lapseofreason Posted March 24, 2008 Posted March 24, 2008 42 more days? So I am guessing that you have to be there on May 4th as well?~Matthew Yes.
Jew Posted March 24, 2008 Posted March 24, 2008 Here's my question: what is your answer going to be to an interviewer who asks you why you have switched jobs so many times? I get that you're young, obviously have no idea what you really want to do with your life yet, etc., etc. But just remember that young or not, in the professional world (or even the seasonal amusement park world), this stuff does catch up to you. What you're doing is turning yourself into a liability for any company that you interview with. No one is going to want to spend the time and money to hire and train you if you are going to leave in 3 months because it wasn't exciting enough for you. In fact, you may not even be eligible for rehire @ Universal, Disney, or Busch anymore. I don't know their exact policies, but I can't imagine quitting barely after passing probation (if you even passed it) is a good thing. If you got flagged for no re-hire status at any of those companies, they are allowed to tell any future employer that calls them "no we wouldn't rehire him."
RIP Psyclone Posted March 24, 2008 Posted March 24, 2008 Since this thread has gone off into a tangent anyway, I'll say this... If you are a roller coaster enthusiast and think you're going to get into roller coaster designing, forget it. Not going to happen. It has to be the other way around. You have to have an interest and aptitude in engineering, designing, and all things mechanical to start off with, and for some that crosses over into roller coasters. ^That's cool, Tyler, I hope you like working with Audra.
inbntly Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 Hi, I was just looking through some google searches and stumbled across this forum. I live in northwest ohio, and sandusky is roughly about 45 minutes from my house (where I'll be working) I had applied for a seasonal position at Cedar point and got an interview probably towards the end of march. I will be working some position in the arcade. Does anyone have any previous experience working this job? At the end of my interview The lady that I saw said I could get as little as 35 hours a week, or even up to 60 hours a week. Also I read somewhere that the bonus at the end of your contract could be anywhere from $.50 or $1.00 for every hour you work.. would anyone be able to give me a more solid figure for the upcoming 2008 season? Also I think I would like to live in the housing they provide because it would cost me roughly 40 bucks a week in gas compared to the 24.00 a week the bayside apartments (The ones I'm really considering) cost. I think being a ride op would be a lot of fun, and definitely a different job experience then the average person gets. After this year I might considering working over next summer and trying for a ride op position, I didn't try to get one this year considering I didn't apply until early march.. and figured those positions would be taken. Right now my contract is from May 10th, until September 24th, that leaving me a week to get everything ready before I leave for school in Chicago. Thanks for any input on the matter and I was very impressed with the information I've already read over in this thread.. well except for the last two pages which were a little off topic, you'll have that. Thanks again, inbntly
lapseofreason Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 If you look on CP"s website, it says the bonus is $.35 an hour for every hour you work March 3 through November 2nd, and $1.00 an hour for Halloweekends (starting September 8th). You have to work through your entire contract to get the bonus though. Also, I hope you said you wanted housing when you interviewed, because I don't think you can just walk up when you process in and say, "Hey, I want housing". Hope that helped.
Scaparri Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 ^Actually, for the record, unless you live within 25 miles of the park, you are required to stay in the housing on Point. So they'll probably know automatically if somebody will be staying in the housing.
mantis2004 Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 You're contract won't specify that you get housing unless you put in on your application. And the system won't allow you to apply if you live within that 25 mile range. I know plenty of people that drive from Bellevue daily just to work here.

Thanks again, inbntly Correct housing is what happens after process in and is not on the applications, etc. Also note! Get your parking pass quick and early if needed. Honest the ghetto bus sucks and if you miss the bus you can still drive in and make it to work on time, but without the parking pass your going to pay. Just smart planning. Now you could rent a house with some friends off property but unless you get in earlier, and have a few solid friends to depend on the prices are steep & limited closer to the opening you get. But Bayside, out side apartments/houses will offer you the most privacy. Housing is not fully pick able either, warning on that one, it more of an assignment or limited picks, you would be very lucky to get Bayside. **Be friends with the personnel at housing, trust me they will help you get into other rooms as they open up. Never worked or knew anyone in that department so sorry I can’t help more. Have fun and use protection…. High SPF that is. Oh and hey, after I want to say 3 weeks to 1 month (This might have changed) you will be eligible to transfer to attractions if you want to go for it. Rides crews shift a lot in the very beginning and near end of season not to mention the firings from bad workers. Once in rides it will be easier to transfer to different ones. Become friends with you supervisors, and transferring will even be easier. But getting into rides as soon as possible will be your smarter move otherwise you might get trapped the whole season. Fyi. Ha, or go for vending I’m sure Scott is still there and a very good guy to work with. Good luck.
coasterguy618 Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 Thats Awesome! Your a ride op at Dragster! I'll be there this summer so Im sure I will see you once or twice!
thrillrideseeker Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 Well I told you guys I would let you know when we find out where we are working! Well the results are in! Tony and I got our contracts a few days ago... and we now know where we are working I got Top Thrill Dragster, and Tony got Maverick!! We are so excited!! Is it May 4th yet? ~Matthew
Swimace Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 North/Central Florida >Ohio >South Florida (Tampa area is Central Florida IMO) I think a summer job at CP would be pretty sweet though. I've never had the chance to work at a theme park and I think it would be a fun job. I'd probably want to work a water park since lifeguards tend to make more money. I've worked as a lifeguard in Florida for the past three years and got a promotion this year, but it was a really fun job if you were doing it with the right people.
thrillrideseeker Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 I'm really hoping my parents move to Florida this summer, in which case I will live with them this summer and work somewhere there. If not, May 10 can take it's time to get here. Tyler "Regretting doing Cedar Point already, but will still try to give it a shot" Hedrick Don't regret doing Cedar Point. If you regret it then you have already put yourself in a bad mind set about it. Just think positive, and you will enjoy it more! ~Matthew
