cfc Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 Let us not forget all the other versions of Casino Royale. There was also a live TV version with Barry Nelson as Bond.
Sir Clinksalot Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 Finally saw Les Miserables today. I thought it was VERY good. I haven't seen the Broadway show but I've heard the soundtrack and I've read the book so I pretty much knew the story line. I thought all the actors did a phenomonal job except ... no, not Russell Crowe, I thought he was good ... Amanda Seyfred. She didn't fit Cosette for me at all (and I have a friend that works on Broadway who felt the same so glad to know I wasn't alone in that one). Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway and Samantha Barks (Epinone) were absolutely fantastic. Highlights for me were of course Anne Hathway's "I dreamed a dream", "A Little Fall of Rain" and "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables". Those three got me good. On a totally different note, also saw Frankenweenie last night. I loved it. Very faithful to Tim Burton's original short, but took it to another level. Not sure if I liked it as much as Brave, but I liked it very much. Only 2 Animated movies and 6 "Best Picture" movies to go before Oscar night. Watching Beasts of the Southern Wild tonight.
Sir Clinksalot Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 Sorry for the double post, caught a couple more movies last night and today. Beasts of the Southern Wild This is a weird one for me. I "liked" it, but I didn't think it lived up to the hype AT ALL. I may have liked it more if not for all the hype, but without all the hype I probably would have never seen it. My advice, if you are going to watch this, do some research on it first so you know the basic story line at least. Argo This one, unlike "Beasts" TOTALLY lived up to the hype, and then some IMO. I'm going to come out and say it, Ben got Robbed (and I'm SO not a Ben Affleck fan) and so far (even though I have yet to see Lincoln and a few other Best Picture ones) I think this is my pick for Best Picture. I think I liked Django better based on my personal preferences, but I think this is probably the better "movie" if that makes any sense.
robbalvey Posted January 20, 2013 Author Posted January 20, 2013 I thought all the actors did a phenomonal job except ... no, not Russell Crowe, I thought he was good ... Amanda Seyfred. Adult Cosette has always been such a small part, even in the stage production. I completely disagree that Seyfred wasn't good. In fact, if you listen to some of the best cast recordings of the show out there, the movie version of In My Life and a Heart Full of Love are SO CLOSE to the stage version that you almost can't tell them apart listing to the audio. I've seen the stage production about 50 times, and I don't think I've ever seen a "memorable" adult Cosette. So Seyfred's "good" performance fit the character just fine. I do think that Samantha Barks was my favourite actor of the film. Could be because Eponine is my favourite character, and Barks comes right out of the West End production of the same character...
Sir Clinksalot Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 ^ And she's smoking hot. I think she was probably my favorite too.
alilstronger Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 I watched 10 Years last night. It was not a huge hit at all in the theaters and came out to DVD rather quickly. It is the story of a group of friends coming back home for their 10 year high school reunion. It is one of them ensemble cast where they have many story lines going on at once. I literally only wanted to see it for Channing Tatum and Rosario Dawson - really the two main characters. I loved all the story lines honestly and I think they did a good job with each one. The acting was pretty good as well. It was neat to see Channing interacting with his real life wife Jenna Dewan-Tatum (they were a couple in the movie). You could see the connection all of their faces. The only thing I would say is I did not like that they did not finish any of the story lines. They left each and every one open so I am assuming they just wanted the audience to think of each situation and how they ended.
Mr.Roller77 Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 I can't wait for the new Star Trek movie to come out, it's the sequel to the 2009 film. Don't know the exact date of the release yet, though.
VinTheAttendant Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 I recently watched Top Secret!. I remembered seeing it as a kid, but it has been maybe about ten years since the last time I played it, so I had forgotten just about everything except for some of the more memorable moments. I'm a fan of the Zucker Abrahams Zucker movies, but everyone only ever seems to mention the big ones like Airplane and The Naked Gun that I almost forgot that Top Secret even existed. Let me just say that it's been a few days since I watched it, but my throat and my face are still sore from laughing so hard. The movie is every bit as funny as Airplane and The Naked Gun, nearly every single joke got a big laugh from me, the characters were very likable, and the storyline was surprisingly easy to follow. If you had told me a few days ago that there was a movie combining war spies with an up-and-coming rock and roll star, I would have instantly told you that the movie would suck. But in my opinion, Top Secret is not only underrated, but an example of a parody/spoof movie done right; I just wish there were more of those in this day and age.
azza29 Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 I caught a preview screening of Flight last night (another of those ones that took a few months to make it across the Pacific). Quite an interesting film, and certainly very different from the rest of Robert Zemeckis' work. I was expecting more of a Law & Order-style courtroom drama but it was more character-driven, which was a good thing. John Goodman was a standout - after years of second-rate kiddie films he's finally found some decent roles. Recommended.
_IntaMAN_ Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 Gonna post a review of a few movies I saw: PITCH PERFECT: Exceeded my expectations, this movie was hilarious and the casting was good as well. I thought this movie was gonna be "cheezy" as you would say and not meet my expectations but I was wrong, I really enjoyed it! 9/10 GANGSTER SQUAD: Awesome movie by all means, great cast and awesome story line. I cried near the end (haha I know not very manly of me ) but it was all worth it. 10/10 REALLY looking forward to Iron Man 3 and Star Trek: Into Darkness... They both look like they will be great movies!

"I know a little German..he's right over there!"
cfc Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 ^Top Secret is Val Kilmer's best film--he's actually very funny in it. I just loved the mash up of old WWII films, Cold War intrigue, and 1960s beach party movies, with a touch of Blue Lagoon for good measure. Too bad it bombed on release. I think it was just too weird for general audiences. Too bad "skeet surfing" never caught on. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MaXOHCNgYrc
BeemerBoy Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 Another vote for Top Secret! Definitely underrated in that genre. ^^ Great minds think alike. I was gonna post that quote.
SharkTums Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 Top Secret was the last movie I ever saw at a Drive In!
Sir Clinksalot Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 Top Secret is definitely one of my favorites.
jray21 Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 I love Top Secret! I also can't remember the last time I went to a Drive In! They still have one here in Reno, but I'm too scared to go.
cfc Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 I think the last movie I saw at a drive-in was that terrible 1970s version of King Kong.
Sir Clinksalot Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 Zero Dark Thirty Man, I love $5 movie Tuesdays. Another GREAT movie to check off the "Best Picture" list. Parts of it were VERY hard to watch ... VERY. But the movie was fantastic, there was no "filler" and the movie sucks you in from the first second and never lets up until it's inevitable end. All of the performances were great, directing was great and the final "Seal Team Six" stuff was probably some of the best covert ops footage I've ever seen in a movie. So compelling and on the edge of your seat for 2 1/2 hours. I still think Argo may have been the better movie, but it's hard to decide now.
_IntaMAN_ Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 According to MTV News, J.J. Abrams is going to direct Star Wars Episode VII... now he rarely disappoints so I have high hopes: http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1700760/jj-abrams-star-wars-episode-vii.jhtml
imawesome1124 Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 We rented Top Secret from Netflix a few years ago and I don't remember much about it, but I remember it was really funny and Airplane-esque in its humor.
cfc Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 (edited) ^Top Secret was Jim Abrams and the Zucker Brothers' follow-up to Airplane before they made the Police Squad TV show and Naked Gun movie series. It bombed on release, but developed a cult following. Edited January 25, 2013 by cfc
imawesome1124 Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 I firmly believe that Airplane is one of the best comedies ever, along with The Naked Gun movies and of course Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
Sir Clinksalot Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 ^ I prefer Life of Brian over Grail, but they are all up there. Watched ParaNorman the other night. I really enjoyed it. I still think Frankenweenie is my pick for that Oscar but this would be my dark horse.
azza29 Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 ^As long of either of those films win it I'll be happy. They're both a cut above the other nominees. Caught Django Unchained last night - up there with Inglourious Basterds as my favourite Tarantino film. The entire cast did a great job but Christoph Waltz in particular was excellent, really knows how to deliver a line. And although the action was great, the writing was definitely the highlight of the film. And, thankfully, Tarantino's Aussie accent was acceptable (fun fact: the other coal miner, John Jarratt, spent the 90's as Australia's answer to Bob Vila).
cfc Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 ^I liked Django Unchained, too, but thought that Tarantino's cameo was the worst one he'd made in any of his movies. He just mumbled his way through it, and I could barely make out anything he'd said. He did die in spectacular fashion, though.
