Worst Day Ever (5-25-2007)

Recommended Posts

This officially was the worst day ever as my Jeep Cherokee was totaled. An 80 year old man who had just buried his wife the day before, could not sleep. He decided to go to the gym at 2 AM to swim off his mind of her. He was coming home at 7AM while I was on my way to school. It was my last day and also the day of my hardest final. (Latin)

I was going one way and he coming the other. He fell asleep, swerves into my lane (oncoming) and slams into me head on. We collide at a combined speed of 80+ MPH. This is because it was a 45 mph road. He was driving a HUGE Mercedes SUV. I swerve to the right but is still a frontal-side impact. The airbags are freakin loud. However, I did not have side airbags meaning when he hit me partially on the side, my head slammed into the door. It sounds like 1 million balloons popping all at once. Seriously though, they saved my life.

He spins me around 180*, pushes me over a curb and am now going down backwards down into ditch. I slam into a tree going backwards. The transmission on my car was ripped out from underneath along with 3 out of 4 wheels broken off the axels from the force of going over a curb. The inside of the car is even worse, the seats were broken off of the car because of the forces. The guy continues up the wrong side of the road for approx 900Feet before running off and slamming into a fence.

When he hit me, both airbags went off (thank God). However, for some reason, whenever a car is hit head on, the engine is supposed to drop so it is not pushed into the passenger compartment crushing the passengers. For some reason, mine didn't and the police said if I reacted even 1/10th of a second later I would have been crushed by my engine. Even better, pictures! Lol Sorry for the size however, I am going to insurance to take better ones tomorrow as well as look at other cars.

Oh what I forgot to mention was that the transmission, suspension, and everything else UNDER the vehicle. was ripped off lying on the road. The axels were also broken, not just the wheels. The drivetrain was inm about 4-5 different pieces sitting in the grass.

you must have lived a pretty good life so far to have a car accident be the worst day of your life. Just think about the guy who buried his wife and had the accident... THAT sounds more like a "worst day ever" so just look at it that way.

Oddly, when my wife totaled my Monte (my favorite car of all that I've owned), it ultimately turned out to be a great day.

Not only did it lead to her epilepsy diagnosis (she had a seizure while driving...yes, that's good, because without a diagnosis she's still be having seizures and we wouldn't know why...now she's on anti-epilepics and has been seizure-free free almost 18 months), but my insurance company settled the claim for more than what I paid for the car in the first place.

That, in turn, gave us more than enough to put us in a really nice Blazer, which is actually a much better car for us, between the extensive camping we do and the fact that we need four-wheel-drive just to get in and out of our neighborhood in the winter.

So, in hindsight, I'm pretty thankful that my wife cracked up the car (even though I do miss that car, and I jokingly shove it down her throat every time in comes up in conversation). You should consider yourself lucky and think of the positive that could come out of this.

Between that car wreck experience and my own personal "worst day ever" (I won't rehash it here - people here that know me well enough know exactly what day that is), I'd have to say I'm not really impressed by a wrecked Jeep. I'm glad you're OK, and I'm sorry it happened to you, but I agree with Joe...you're living a pretty charmed life if this is your "worst day ever." It could be much worse.

Glad you are ok man...hope the old guy is well too...Hope you get a cool new car!

I saw something simular a few years back..though not as bad.....I was driving home with my mom and an old man in a cadillac next to us was manuvering around this bend and he was totally knocked out sleep with his face on the horn...going about 10 miles an hour...We were screaming at him to trying to get him to wake...but he ended up crashing into a telephone pole a few feet ahead...he was ok though.

This story keeps getting better!

The man had an insurance company that takes only the worst of the worst drivers. You have to have like 3 accidents in a 2 year period of your fault and be rejected by other insurance companies just to get this one. They are trying to nickle and dime us on everything. First they refused to give me a rental car. Now, they are refusing to pay us for the total of the car even though he was at fault. They are saying that "I could have done a better job avoiding it." So in turn, my insurance company has delt with them before and to make us happy, payed us for the car. They (my insurance) in turn are now suing the other insurance company (his) to get the money back that they (mine) should not have payed while his should have due to him being at fault.

Basically, in short, because I am 16, his insurance is refusing to pay for the medical check ups and the totaled car.

^ I thought you said it was TX state law for the at-fault driver to cover expenses whether a claim was filed or not? Good thing your insurance company has prior experience with this other company. And to think you were being the nice guy to check up on the other driver...

Doesnt always mean the companies follow those rules...

But yea, it seems pretty lame. Driver falls asleep and swerves left of center but its your job to avoid it? lol! Id take whoevers car I could find, drive straight down to the company and do some talkin if I could find someone.
