I have nothing against the Pens as a team, they're fantastic, but I do have a problem with them being NBC's end all be all of hockey teams.

Yeah, I mean they should totally spotlight a team like, say the Columbus Blue Jackets! That would definitely attract more fans!

^^ I understand that the Penguin franchise is a cash cow and pulls in a large number of fans. My point is even when the pens aren't playing in that particular game on NBC, it seems they always work the team or at least Crosby into the conversations. When I'm watching the Detroit vs Phoenix game or the Tampa vs Boston game or whatever game, I don't care to hear how great Pitsburgh is.

This is a REALLY bad time to be a Caps fan. You get so used to being one of the best in the league to suddenly one of the worst. It's pretty much official there will be no postseason. In fact I would be AMAZED if the Caps actually make the playoffs.

^That tends to happen when a guy who usually produces around 100 points a season is only on pace for 60 points this season. Also, he has no help with secondary scoring and Semin is a lazy bum. Caps need a bit of an overhaul to stay competitive in my opinion.

I still haven't given up on the Sabres despite the fact that they spent to the cap this season, dwindled in the conference basement for a while, and had a contract dispute with Time Warner/MSG which meant that most of their fans (myself included) couldn't even watch most of this season's games. Even after all that, they're only six points out of a playoff spot.

While it seems unlikely, it could still happen. I wouldn't be too quick to bail on your team only to find them come back and win 10 in a row and end up in like 7th in the conference...people here would probably eat you alive.

Any team in the NHL can go on a multi-game winning or losing streak and leap frog in the standings at any given time...even if they have looked like sh#t for most of the season.

Los Angeles Flyers acquire Jeff Carter for Jack Johnson and a first round pick.

LOS ANGELES – The goal-starved Los Angeles Kings acquired three-time 30-goal scorer Jeff Carter from the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday in exchange for defenseman Jack Johnson and a conditional first-round selection in either the 2012 or 2013 NHL Draft.

The deal has been completed, contingent on both players passing physicals. "Jeff is a proven goal scorer in our League," Kings president and general manager Dean Lombardi said in a statement. He brings goal-scoring abilities, speed and at his age he is entering the prime of his career. We also like his versatility as he can play both center and wing. We also want to wish Jack Johnson the best going forward."

Despite all All-Star season from goaltender Jonathan Quick, the Kings are scrambling to hang on to the last playoff berth in the Western Conference because of continual goal-scoring woes. L.A. has just 125 non-shootout goals in 61 games, a League-low 2.05 per game. They are off until Chicago comes to the Staples Center on Saturday.

Carter has three NHL seasons with 30 or more goals and five with 20 or more during his six-plus season career. The 27-year-old is signed through the 2021-22 season after inking an 11-year contract with the Philadelphia Flyers in November 2010. Carter was traded by the Flyers to Columbus on June 23, 2011.

In 500 regular-season games with the Flyers and Blue Jackets, Carter has 368 points (196 goals, 172 assists), 302 penalty minutes and a plus-40 rating. During his six seasons with the Flyers Carter averaged 30 goals, 57 points and 77 games played. He has 15 goals and 10 assists with the Blue Jackets this season while being limited to 39 games played due to injuries. Carter is second on the Blue Jackets in goals and leads the club in power-play goals with eight. He is one of four players this season to score two hat tricks; his second came against San Jose on Tuesday.

Carter has also appeared in 47 Stanley Cup Playoff games, scoring 13 goals and recording 21 points, along with 34 penalty minutes. He, along with now-current Kings teammate Mike Richards, helped the Flyers reach the Stanley Cup Final in 2010.

Carter began his NHL career in 2005-06 with the Flyers, who took him with the 11th pick in the first round of the 2003 NHL Draft. He reached the 30-goal mark in each of the previous three seasons, including a career-high 46 goals and 84 points in 2008-09. He led the Flyers in goals last season with 36 and was tied for third on the team with 66 points.

Johnson, 25, has 24 points (eight goals, 16 assists) and 24 penalty minutes in 61 games for the Kings this season. In 343 regular-season games, all with the Kings, Johnson has 124 points (30 goals, 94 assists) and 256 penalty minutes. He is 1-11-12 with six penalty minutes in 12 career Stanley Cup Playoff games.

The 6-foot-1, 231-pound native of Indianapolis began his NHL career late in the 2006-07 season after finishing his sophomore season at the University of Michigan. He was originally selected by the Carolina Hurricanes with the third pick in the 2005 NHL Draft. The Kings acquired Johnson from Carolina on Sept. 29, 2006, for Oleg Tverdovsky and Eric Belanger.

I think they would have preferred Nash, but Carter should provide a boost to the offense. He definitely didn't come cheap. What are the Jackets gonna get for Nash I wonder?

Jack is a good player with the potential to be a great player. Now that he is with a team where he is without a doubt the #1 D man I think he will step up. When Drew Doughty went down this year and last, Jack really picked up his game. However when DD returned, he went back to making stupid mistakes in his own zone.

Wish you all the best JMFJ!

With the development of Slava Voynov, it's not a HUGE loss. He's probably better defensively and only a little worse offensively, and now they have a full-time slot for him. But Carter's contract and history of injuries are a little worrisome...

There are rumblings here in Phoenix about going after Nash. I wouldn't mind seeing him here. He is a fantastic player when he is on his game, and maybe a fresh start will kick start that. Plus his hard, gritty, power forward style will fit perfectly into Tip's way of coaching the game. But like you said, what will Nash cost. We got Vermette from Columbus pretty cheap in my opinion with two picks and a rookie goalie, but Nash could come at a greater price and we can't really afford to lose many players.

I can't believe people are saying we need to trade Ovi. Why would we trade the best player in the world just because he's having a slump? He will get back to his old self, but to do that three things need to happen: 1)Take the C away, he is not a good leader at all. 2)Stop all the endorsement deals, it's putting too much on his mind. 3)CHANGE HIS GAME!!!!! He can't get around 2,3,4 defenseman anymore. He needs to get into positions where he can tap in rebounds and shoot one-timers at the net.

Phoenix can go after Nash all they want, but I don't think Nash is willing to waive his no trade clause to a team who's future is so uncertain.

Nash has a list, and Coyotes are most likely not on it.

The Caps did great on those back-to-back games. Now they weren't against really good teams but they still played great. Neuvy made an absolutely amazing save last night but it's not on youtube for some reason.

That's my thought as well. Is it possible? Barely. Is it likely? Probably not. I was just speaking as a fan and a fan of his saying I'd like to see him here.

Ok, I have to go on a little rant here; I want to see if there are any other markets that see this issue. Unfortunately I live in a city dominated by football and basketball fans and next in line is baseball. It's the desert, not an ideal location for hockey, I get it. BUT, it's the quiet time of year, football is in its dead zone, baseball has just barely started and the Suns flat out blow this year. What absolutely floors me is that the media would rather talk about a terrible basketball team, the NFL Combine, how the Cardinals can get Payton Manning, countless hours on Jeremy Lin or “Linsanity”, whether or not you’re going to watch the Daytona 500 because Danica Patrick is in it. All of these get brought up more than a local hockey team that has gone 10-0-1 in the month of February, a truly phenomenal act and a story of the NHL let alone the city. Yes, I understand that the point I’m trying to make comes very biased because I could care less about most things in sports other than hockey, a little bit of baseball, and U of M football. But the fact still stands that national stories like Lin or the 500 get hours of air time on a local sports talk show compared to a local team that has strung together a fantastic stretch of games.

The most I hear about the Coyotes on any of the sports radio shows is “The Suns suck *Talk for 15 minutes on this*. Hey by the way check out the ‘yotes they’re playing great!! They really are the story of this city right now *get a few stats and the next game time.* Now how can the Cardinals get Manning? *talk for the rest of the show on this*” If they’re the story of the city why not report on them? Why not talk about them for more than two minutes every 4 hours? They are always saying that the Coyotes are struggling to get fans, struggling to get attendance during the week night games. If the city would actually jump on the bandwagon and talk about the team I believe things would get better. More than half of this city is made up of people from the Midwest and Canada, hockey fans, yet nobody supports the team. If I, a devout Red Wings fan for the first 21 years of my life, can say “screw the Wings I’m joining the Coyotes camp!!!” I believe more can too, or at least support the team when their home team isn’t playing them.

I guess my point is this, do any other NHL teams that struggle a little bit (the ‘Canes, the Jackets, the Oilers etc) get shoved into the corner and basically ignored? I’m just a frustrated fan watching a team get almost no love from their city when they are playing great, entertaining hockey.

I guess McPhee doesn't want his team to make the playoffs. He made NO trades at the deadline when he could clearly see that the team he has right now flat out sucks. Vokoun is nothing more than garbage and so is Schultz. Semin is far too lazy and Ward just hasn't done anything. I know we did great over the weekend but it was only two games and against less than stellar teams. McPhee needs to go, he should have realized that the Caps need a complete makeover if we have ANY hope of competing for the playoffs.

^ There was very little action at this years trade deadline. So I wouldn't knock your GM for not making trades. There was only a handful of minor deals done, none of them significant.

Either there wasn't many deals to be made, or teams were being cautious of the upcoming CBA negotiations.

At the end of the day making no trades is better then making bad impulse trades. Rarely ever does a team make deals on deadline day that change their fortunes. More often teams make poor trades in desperation.

I'm just pleased the Flyers did their trading early on and managed to get 2 veteran defensemen that they desperately needed with the absence of Pronger. Already they both seem to be pulling their weight on the team, I just hope they continue to do their part and make Bryz comfortable and confident again in goal.

Posted

Very surprised that Scott Howson admitted that Nash asked for a trade. Can't imagine he gets any more at the draft than he would have today after that comment.

Posted

^^ I personally find it shocking how the Flyers were able to do so well without Pronger most of the season and with their crap goaltending. Being a Caps fan I don't like the Flyers at all, but I can praise the depth they have to do so well.

Posted

At this point, I'm still just trying to figure out why the hell Howson is still employed. We need him and the rest of the front office gone if we are even going to have a chance as a successful team.

Posted

Man, Nashville went all out at the trade deadline. Gaustad is a great fit to them, they got the other Kostitsyn brother, and they added Gill to their already immense D about a week ago. I'm going out on a limb here, but I think Nashville has a great chance to win the Cup. They are going to be scary the rest of the season and into the playoffs. I think they are the team most likely to make a deep playoff run.
