^ Kessel is tearing it up this year...looks like Toronto might finally be ready to break out of it's funk. It's definitely going to make for some good Sabres/Leafs match-ups this season!

I like the way the Pommers, Vanek, Adam line is playing this year. Two of them are already right up there with Kessel in terms of scoring, goals, assists, etc...

Penguins' Michalek is out 4-6 weeks with a broken finger. He's one of those players where you don't know what you have/had until you don't anymore. He's a HUGE part in their defensive play and will be missed. I have the utmost faith that Bylsma will adjust well for his absence, but it won't be an easy fix.

^With as many injuries as they've had, and to the key players they've happened to (Crosby, Malkin, Orpik, Kennedy, Letang being suspended, and now Michalek), it is very impressive that we're off to a 6-2-2 start. Also impressive is James Neal, after scoring just one goal after coming here from Dallas last year, he's a Cy Young candidate at 8 goals and an assist, leading the NHL in goals.

Okay, so after watching the first seven games of the season I will post my in-depth analysis of the what I have seen out of the Caps so far this year.

First off, the depth we have shown so far has been unbelievable. Everybody has been contributing pretty much. The only players that don't have any points are DJ King and Jay Beagle, but only because they have played 3 or less games. Ovechkin is having a slow start, but I expected him to. Honestly I don't mind him not scoring as much because it shows the depth that the Caps have. The young guys have also been performing very well, which is something we need. Johansson and Perrault have both shown excellent speed and have lit the lamp mumerous times. I think it is better NOT to have one person scoring all the goals like Pittsburgh with Neal and Toronto with Kessel, because again, it shows depth. Nobody on the team has a negative +/-. Ovechkin still has a problem of trying to beat two or three defensemen at a time to take the puck to the net. It isn't working, the other teams have figured out how to stop him. I don't like the guy, but I think Ovie needs to do what Crosby has done and start shooting more. He needs to get to the front of the net and be there to tap in rebounds. Just shooting more could get him an extra 15+ goals in a season. Vokoun, after the first game, has been outstanding. After his first start the Caps have not given up more than two goals a game. Vokoun doesn't deserve all the credit though. The neutral zone defense hasn't been as good as I would like, but around the net where it counts has been great. There have been times where Vokoun has come a little too far out of the crease, but the defense has taken away the open net by taking away the shooting lanes and just overall being more agressive. The special teams still have lots of room for improvement, but I think as the season goes on it will improve. That's what I've seen out of the Caps so far, and I hope it continues throughout the season.

Good analysis, but I do have some comments.

You're implying the Penguins don't have depth? If ANY three out of Ovechkin, Semin, Backstrom, or Green were to get hurt and be out for an extended period of time, the Caps wouldn't have a prayer at competing the way they're used to. It's also notable to add that there are more Penguins players with a goal (14) than there are Capitals players with a goal (13).

Lastly, out of the Penguins' six wins, there were only two games where Neal had a goal that significantly mattered, and wasn't when the game was already out of reach or won. I agree with Kessel because he IS carrying the Leafs (there are only 7 other players with a goal), but Neal isn't even remotely close to carrying the Penguins...in fact I wouldn't say anyone is carrying the team. Right now the Penguins are the epitome of 'depth.'

My reference to the Cy Young in regards to hockey...

James Neal has 8 goals and one assist, translated to a W-L record for a pitcher and he's 8-1. Usually pitchers with the best winning percentage get the Cy Young. Just a little joke haha.

There is a flaw with that statement. The Caps have a WINNING record with Ovie out of the lineup. Green missed a ton of games last year with a concussion, we did great. Backstrom almost never misses games so we don't have to worry about him. You need to get your facts straight before you post something like that.

I never said they wouldn't make the playoffs, just that they wouldn't compete the way they're used to (i.e. contend for the Presidents' Trophy). There are no "facts" to get straight. The Caps have never had that many injuries at once, so nobody knows how they would perform. However, I have a REALLY hard time believing they'd be even remotely close to the team they are now with three out of those four out for weeks to months (not one at a time in small spurts). The franchise rests on those core players.
