jackskellington101
http://www.businessweek.com/investor/content/jan2007/pi20070122_415523.htm Right now, the leader in terms of units sold is Microsoft's Xbox 360—it has sold 10.4 million units as of the end of 2006. However, the Xbox 360 was released in November, 2005, so it has had a one-year advantage over the others.... But if you look at who won the launch wars by comparing the launch sales, the Xbox 360 sold 607,000 units from November, 2005, to yearend 2005. That comes in third, behind No. 1 Nintendo Wii, which sold 1.1 million units from its release in November, 2006, to yearend 2006, and second place PlayStation 3, which sold 687,000 units from its November, 2006, launch to yearend 2006 ... What are your recommendations on the stocks? I have a buy on Activision because they have a really strong library of hit games. So you heard the man. Buy Activision stock. Buy buy buy! YoshiFan
Sony really has to do something to get PS3 sales to pick up because right now there is really no incentive to get one with the ridiculous price and not enough exclusives. After the launch hype and holidays have passed, I see PS3's at every store. I went to a Target that has close to 20 last week. I have yet to see a Wii in stock at any store and haven't seen a DS Lite in stock in any store in months. I think Nintendo is going to win this generation of console wars. GMAN962
While I do prefer the Wii, could the amount of consoles sold possible have to do with the shortages that happened at the launch of the 360, and PS3? Nintendo had a lot of Wii's at launch. Our Target had 117! In all fairness, you probably have to take all variables into account, whether it be shortages, defects, returns, etc. -Mike
Carnage
That's going by units sold. If you go by revenue it's much closer to even due to the Wii costing half of what PS3 or Xbox360 does. There's always more then one way to spin these "console wars".
Real
Yea, and Nintendo always makes sure they make a profit - unlike PS3. And there is only one incentive to get the PS3...the Blue Ray. Even though I think its overpriced and not worth it, a stand alone Sony player is 999.99. RIDICULOUS.
Masked_Maverick
The only way I'd buy a PS3 if I was to upgrade to Blu Ray and I would go with the PS3 cause at least I'd have a game system too. But I don't think I'll be upgrading anytime soon.
JT3000
I think Nintendo is going to win this generation of console wars. Seriously, seriously doubt it. What this article conveniently forgot to mention is the fact that the 360 sold the most units in December - this past December. It's outselling the brand new systems a year after launch, adding onto it's large head start. With Sony falling flat on it's face, Microsoft is the new king of video gaming in America... and they haven't even released Halo 3 yet. The Wii is a novelty that'll wear off sooner than later (that's coming from someone who owns one.)

As for novelties that need to wear off, I'd say that about first person shooters like Halo. Snore! But, that's just my preference. I'm glad that Nintendo is trying something different. Had Nintendo been able to ship enough units they might have the most by now. Nintendo also doesn't need to "win". They just need to sell a lot of units and make money. Aren't they hoping to expand the market here, not necessarily beat out other companies?

Nintendo has a few game series that drive sales of its consoles, not just Mario. And one game certainly isn't going to "win the console war". I'm just bitter because all the game genres I used to like to play have gone away due to all these boring first person shooters on PCs. I really miss the old point and click adventure games, like the ones from Lucasarts and Sierra.

And I didn't mean that a single game was going to win the console war. I just pointed out that single games can and do drive console sales. A game like Halo can sell consoles and make the system successful without "winning the console war". MS can't come out on top anyways because they have little market share in Japan. But I can assure you that Halo3 will sell alot of copies, and with it alot of consoles.

Homer
Sony is getting whipped everywhere. Their arrogance will be their downfall. I think Sony is the next Atari. Wasn't it Atari back in the 80's which thought "We'll have more copies of ET/Pac-Man for the 2600 than there are of actual systems sold, one people can keep at their winter lodge." Had Nintendo been able to ship enough units they might have the most by now. Well first of all, I never said Halo was going to "make" the console... although that's exactly what it did for the Xbox. Haven't you ever heard of a "killer app?" They drive sales of a console, whether you believe it or not. With that said, the 360 has a lot more going for it than Halo, which isn't even out yet. It's already been "made" by it's current game library. Gears of War has even sold out in Japan of all places. Referring to shooters as a novelty is pretty foolish, btw. They're the most popular genre in gaming. They aren't going anywhere. Because all of the WIIs and PS3s were sold out! Even if that were the sole reason the 360 is selling more, which I personally doubt, it would be irrelevant. Whoever sells more units "wins" the "war." As it stands, Microsoft had more than a 50% market share last month. Sony and Nintendo are accountable for poor availability of their systems, just like Microsoft was last year. stingrock23
I've got both a PS3 and a Wii, and I do admit ever since I got the Wii I haven't played the PS3. The problem is that there aren't enough games out for the PS3 yet, so I think that's why the sales will lag for a while, adding to the high price. I don't think it was really necessary for Sony to put the Blue Ray in since I don't think it's really going to catch on for a few more years, if ever. I don't see myself going to Blue Ray, even though I now have a player. DVD's will do just fine for me. And I think the lack of games really hurts too. There's nothing else out right now that I'd consider buying, so I'll probably be playing the Wii more often. Once games like Grand Theft Auto and Socom come out, I think sales will improve, but until then, the PS3 will probably be #3. Once better games come out, I'll probably end up playing mostly PS3, but for now, it's all about the Wii

GTA4 is launching on the Xbox360 as well, with an extra two epsiodes downloadable via xbox live. Sony dropped the ball letting that one get away. DATman
If Nintendo would just remake Goldeneye for the Wii there really would be no contest whatsoever.
Homer
^Can't for two reasons. 1. Nintendo doesn't own the rights to make/remake 007 games, that job now belongs to EA. 2. Goldeneye was a Rare game, there is little to no chance that Goldeneye would see the light of day on a Nintendo system again. (Then again, I think Rare kind of wants to head back over to Nintendo now, they are developing and publishing the remake of Diddy Kong Racing on the DS). DATman
^That sucks. Goldeneye had to be the greatest FPS ever. I mean, it really changed that genre.
Blazen_AZN
So let me get this straight... The first James Bond Videogame was published and developed by Parker Brothers, them Mindscape published a Bond videogame developed by Angelsoft, then Domark, then Angelsoft again! then Domark again! After that Mindscape got ahold of the game (yet again). Then it was sent BACk to Domark, then Interplay picked it up; gave it up to THQ, then Domark made ANOTHER bond game, after which Nintendo picked up the frachise and published Rare's Goldeneye, then published one by Saffire Inc, and after that the torch was passed to Electronic Arts where 7 bond games were developed, and finally, the frachise lept over to Activiosn's Treyarch studio... Well thats not confusing at all!
