eyeamthu1 Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 Hi (apologies if this is in the wrong forum!) - I live in the UK and am planning a trip to Cedar Point this summer. I intend to stay there for a few days, and I'd like to stay on-site, so that I can walk from the park to my hotel as frequently as I like (and go for a mid-afternoon swim to get away from the crowds!). Am I correct in saying that the best (and cheapest) hotel to go for would be Hotel Breakers? (I don't want to stay in Camper Village - I believe Lighthouse Point & Sandcastle Suites are more expensive, and that all other hotels are not actually on-site?). Can anyone give me an indication of roughly how much a Hotel Breakers room costs per night, during the summer? (The rates aren't available yet on the official website). I need to work out the total cost of the vacation as soon as possible, to figure out if its affordable... And just a couple of other questions: - I can only visit CP in the summer, so am expecting crowds... but are there any particular times in summer where it may be less busy? (Obviously I'll hit the park on weekdays). - Is there anything else to do nearby to CP? There's Geauga Lake and further afield, PKI, but are there any other attractions nearby? - Best and nearest place for shopping - Cleveland? - Water parks - other than Soak City, are there any other nearby water parks? How do Geauga Lake's/PKI's compare to Soak City? Thanks for all your help, it's much appreciated! Alex
SharkTums Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 I'm currently pricing the CP hotels so I can help you there! You're right, they have not released rates for 2007. For a comparison, August Midweek 2006 Hotel Breakers was $240/night for a regular room. And yes, you're right on where the hotels are in regards to the park.
coastrfreak2000 Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 Hotel Breakers is an awesome place to stay. It may be a bit on the expensive side for the kind of room you get, but the proximity to Cedar Point, Soak City, Challenge Park and the beach make it well worth it, especially if you are staying more than a couple of days. The only "bad" thing I could say about the hotel is if (for whatever reason) you decide to leave the resort you have to drive basically all the way around the the perimeter of the park. Unless of course there was another road that I didn't see when I went in the summer... There isn't much else to do in Sandusky. Cedar Point literally makes this town what it is. Even on the welcome sign for Sandusky it says: "Welcome to Sandusky. Population: . America's roller coast!" Shopping around CP is kinda 'meh' but there are some 'decent' dining options around. But if it turns it isn't affordable, Breakers Express is slightly cheaper than the other CP hotels. It's not on site but you get all the other perks that the other hotels get, such as early entry. The Breakers Express is about a 5 minute drive to the park, and best of all, there's a McDonald's across the street! There are also some smaller, cheaper hotels in Sandusky, but alot of them are ghetto and scary looking. I went last July on a Tuesday and the crowds weren't that bad. MF and TTD only had a 1 hour wait and everything else was about 20 minutes. The crowds might be worse this year due to Maverick, though. I hope all goes well and you can make it to CP this summer.
larrygator Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 How many people are you traveling with? I have the 2006 rates in front of me and Elissa rates look accurate for the newer sections of the hotel (Breakers East and the Towers). The rooms mid-week in the older section with 2 double beds could be as cheap as $150 a night before taxes during August. About $170 after taxes. You should send them an e-mail and ask to be put on their mailing list as they usually have packages available that could save you money since you are not a season pass holder. Even though me, my sister and brother-in law had season passes we saved money with the package deal and didn't even use the free admission tickets they gave us. Another perk staying at the CP resorts that is not clearly stated is that you can buy one day admission tickets at a discounted $31 versus the walk-up price of $39.
carolinacaniac Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 Another thing to think about with the Breakers Express is that they also have shuttles that go from the breakers express and castaway bay to the main property. Early to Mid June would be your best bet for lighter crowds. When the evening comes, some of the older major rides may have shorter or even walk-on lines. I remember when I worked there they first summer I was there, I went to the park on the first sunday of June during my day off, and Raptor had a walk-on line at around 4 in the afternoon. This senario may not always happen, but it is possible. You also are right in Cleveland being better for shopping. If you head that way, I recommend Tower City. It is a really neat mall with some cool arcitecture with many stores, a large food court and a movie theater. Another place that seems to be popular near Cedar Point is the Eire Islands, that maybe something to look into. There is also a Carosuel Museum in downtown Sandusky.
eyeamthu1 Posted January 4, 2007 Author Posted January 4, 2007 Thanks for all the help so far -- anymore would be as appreciated! I think I'm going to do spend 2 or 3 days around the Cleveland area, to have a look round the city, shop and visit Geauga Lake, and then 4 or so days at Cedar Point. From these responses, provided the rates stay the same, I think I'll stay at Hotel Breakers - I'd love the luxury of being able to walk between my room and the park as I choose. I'll need a room for 3 people, so a two double bed room would be ideal - I can only visit in July or August however. I would definitely be staying on the weekdays though, to avoid crowds. Thanks once again!
Carnage Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 ^ 2-3 days is probably more then enough time to spend in Cleveland. Geagua Lake is a park that probably will not take you longer then 2-3 hours to finish with. If you have to choose between July and August I'd choose August. Though it's pretty much a crap shoot with either month.
mcjaco Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 I concur with Paul. GL is an easy trip. You can get all the credits within a few hours, especially with X-Flight gone.
larrygator Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 well there is also the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. I've never been but have heard that some people love it. and it also sounds like he wants to shop to take advantage of the exchange rate
jimbobcoaster Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 I also might be planning a trip to Cedar Point in the summer, and I saw that prices at Breaker Express (I think it's called) are from $60-$200. I was wondering, if I could manage to get one of the rooms that are around $60 I guess, would I still get the benefit of getting to the park an hour early? That hour thing would be very beneficial, we just don't want to pay like hundreds of dollars a night.
SharkTums Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 ^It's more about time of season, rather than room type. Breakers Express is pretty much the equivalent of a Holiday Inn Express. Some rooms may be a bit nicer (King, fridge, microwave) but don't expect anything amazing. I think I've paid as little as $69 and as much as $139 for that hotel.
bigjohnson51 Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 I'm glad I stumbled over this topic because, I'm also trying to play a trip to Cedar Point on a Tuesday and Wednesday in late May or early June. Does anybody know if two days is enough time to get everything done at Cedar Point? Right now we our schedule looks like this... SATURDAY- Drive from KC to PKI SUNDAY- Spend the day at PKI MONDAY-Drive to Cedar Point TUESDAY and WEDNESDAY- Spend the day at Cedar Point THURSDAY- Drive to Holiday World FRIDAY- Spend day at Holiday World SATURDAY- Drive home Is there anything about that schedule that looks like I wouldn't have enough time to be at one of the parks?[/i]

You might have been seeing the cost of a package which includes park tickets, parking voucher, etc. For staying at any Cedar Point resort(Breakers,Sandcastle,Lighthouse Point,Camper Village,Castaway Bay,Breakers Express) you get early entry to the park. (including the day you check out) So yes, if you stay at Breakers Express you will get early entry. BE is where I stay every time now. It's affordable, and you still get all the perks.
jimbobcoaster Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 Thank you both for your help. I guess Breakers Express will be a good bet to stay in for being (somewhat) inexpensive and it offers that hour early park entrance I desire . lol.

Does anybody know if two days is enough time to get everything done at Cedar Point? Two weekdays should be fine to get everything done at CP. And if you arrive Monday in Sandusky you can probably get some things out of the way Monday night. Assuming you will have the MAXX pass. Only thing to be aware of it that TTD tends to be tempermental early in the season due to colder weather. If winter makes it east of Colorado this year.
bigjohnson51 Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 Alright! Thanks for the info. Since I have a Cedar Fair Maxx Pass I'll probably try and get some stuff done that monday. I hope I can get a ride on Dragster!
USRoadTripper Posted January 7, 2007 Posted January 7, 2007 Just throwing in my two cents about what happened during my trip last year. Kevin and I were there on Sunday July 10th, and Monday July 11th, and the crowds were MUCH bigger on Monday. On Sunday, the only rides with significant waits were Top Thrill Dragster (1:15), Millenium Force (1:00) and Raptor (0:45). Everything else was less than a 10 minute wait or so. On the Monday, EVERYTHING had waits of at least a half hour. My assumption was that locals think the weekends are busy, so they don't go on weekends. -Julie
Jeezus Juice Posted January 7, 2007 Posted January 7, 2007 SATURDAY- Drive from KC to PKI SUNDAY- Spend the day at PKI MONDAY-Drive to Cedar Point TUESDAY and WEDNESDAY- Spend the day at Cedar Point THURSDAY- Drive to Holiday World FRIDAY- Spend day at Holiday World SATURDAY- Drive home The only thing I'd suggest is on monday the drive to cedar point should only be 3-4 hours from PKI. If you get an early start you can have an easy 1/2-full day there. I'm assuming you're getting a maxx pass of some sort too. I know it's not a huge deal, but SFKK is right between PKI and HW, if you haven't been. Another thing to consider is staying in Columbus or somewhere else along the way sunday night so you'll have less of a drive to the point on monday. Otherwise your schedual looks good. I know many of us, myself included, have done the same midwest triangle many times. If I personally was doing it: Sat- Drive Sun- PKI Mon/tues- CP Wed- CP then drive to Louisville Thurs- SFKK, Beech Bend, drive to Evansville Fri- HW Sat- Drive home Looks like a fun trip! Hope this helps! -Don
bigjohnson51 Posted January 7, 2007 Posted January 7, 2007 ^Hey I like that schedule. I'll have to run it by my parents and see what they think. They are the ones with the money lol.
PhishyBrewer Posted January 7, 2007 Posted January 7, 2007 I usually stay at Breaker's East every October because of the connivence of staying right at the park. And being a share holder it's 2 night for the price of 1. But if your looking for something clean... look else where.
Chadley Posted January 7, 2007 Posted January 7, 2007 - Up at CP I always suggest Chet & Matt's pizza. There have a great daily pizza buffet! Once you leave the CP causeway it's about 5 min. away. Located off Milan Rd., (which is the main drag through Sandusky where all the restaurants/waterpark resorts are at). - If the weather is rotten any particular day Castaway Bay & Kalahari will often have day passes for sale, (just be aware that how many passes available are determined by their vacancy that day). CB is pretty nice, but Kalahari exceeded my expectations...really nice. - Soak City is always nice too, but in comparison to Geauga's waterpark it's somewhat outdated. But then again, GL's waterpark is only about 2 years old too. Soak City is an up-charge in most cases. However GL and PKI are still two waterparks included in admission price if I read the details right. - May and early-June are really good times attendance wise. If you go early in May you may want to pack for the weather too. One day can be 75/sunny, and the next 50/rain. - Rock-N-Roll Hall can be fun if you know your music. There are parts that the everyday music fan may find uninteresting. But if you love rock!...you'll love the Hall. Don't know if things have changed since I was there last, but when I was there last time no cameras of any type were permitted. They have an area where they make you check all cameras. - PKI just welcomed the opening of the newest Great Wolf Lodge right next door to the park. If money is not an option this place looks awesome.
Marko Posted January 7, 2007 Posted January 7, 2007 Another thing to think about with the Breakers Express is that they also have shuttles that go from the breakers express and castaway bay to the main property. When did either off-site properties add a shuttle?
eddie200330 Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 I am pretty sure the website has a link for it, or call 1-800-BESTFUN for the family getaway guide. It has many useful coupons for just about everything at the park. They offer the 2 day ride and slide pass for pretty much the cost of one day admission to CP. IMHO the cost of the rooms at Breakers is outrageous for what they are like inside. You are only paying for the convenience of walking out front door into the park. Sandcastle is much nicer for the money. Lighthouse Point is also overpriced. The cabins are tiny inside and 4 people sleep in a room no bigger than your standard jail cell!!! (The other 2 get a harder than hell futon!) As was stated earlier Sandusky is worthless outside of CP, Cleveland is a short drive down the coast.

And being a share holder it's 2 night for the price of 1. Wally - I used those share holder coupons in 2005, also. Did Cedar Fair send you those hotel coupons last year? I only got a $100 off certificate for Castaway Bay in 2006.
PhishyBrewer Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 ^Come to think of it, I didn't even notice last year(2006) because we didn't end up going because of Don's wedding in So-Cal.
