coasterboy76
I cam across some old picture files while cleaning out and old laptop today, and thought I would post them here. These are shots of Six Flags Over Mid-America ( SFSTL) as it was called back then. for those of you who remember the park like this, these shots should bring back some memories for you. I hope the rest of you enjoy them as much as I do.. this was the ad picture for the Rail Blazer. The Ill fated "Rail Blazer" instead of building a new coaster, Six Flags put stand up trains on the current Mine train track.. didnt work too well, a rough ride it was. this ride didn't make it past the 1984 season, and the mine train was returned to its park pamphlet advertising the Jetscream! this is circa 1981 "Injun Joes Cave" which is now the Scooby Doo haunted adventure. The Riverking Mine train station-- for many years during the 80's the track it runs on now was not in operation, . This station is now closed, the track was removed and the coaster now runs on the other track. The "Sky Shooter" Tallest thrill ride in the world! 250ft of slow fun The Buccaneer! wich was transformed into the jokers Jinx in the late 80's early 90's these are the "super sport cars" we had these in addition to the anitque cars. Batman and Hurricane Harbor occupy this area now another shot of the better of the 2 tracks River king Mine Train-- the best of the 2 tracks..this was removed and the Ninja sits here now. The "old Chicago" section of the Illinois section of the park-- Right behind this sign is where the Rush Street Flyer sits now.. Worlds fair train station, in front of the Palace Music hall Hoo Hoo log flume postcard The Skyway Six Flags Logo bumpersticker

coasterboy76
Wow, I finally get to see pics of the old River King Mine Ride with the stand-up trains. Awesome Yeah, Pictures of the Rail Blazer are very hard to find, it was only open one season, and it didn't even make it a full season, the ride was shut down on Saturday, July 7, 1984 after a woman was flung out of the car and fell 20 feet to her death. The ride itself was very rough, a mine train coaster should remain a mine train coaster...lol
coasterboy76
here are a few more shots... The Jetscream Opening season 1981 The old dolphin show, wich was switched to the US diving team show, then the ever popular "Robin Hood Stunt Spectacular" veiw from the Sky Way going to the Illinois section of the park the Hoo Hoo log flume A staple at most of the Six Flags parks during the 70's - the Krofft Puppet show theatre This is the Haunted house that was at the front entrance of the park during the 80's
BeemerBoy
^ OMG, was that as big as the dolphin tank was, or did it extend beyond what was shown in the picture?
Olsor
How about giving some props to the site where you got those RailBlazer and Jet Scream pics: www.geocities.com/Pipeline/Reef/6776/top RailBlazer did reopen with additional seatbelts, if I remember correctly, about a month after the accident. It ran that way for the rest of the season, and then the old sit-down trains were put back on.
pkdcoaster
Awesome Retro Photo TR!! Is it just me or did parks look alot more nicer back then? Thanks for sharing JEFF
pvcoasterguy
Eww... the Rail Blazer trains look awful and uncomfortable. It seems that it would be easy for someone to get flung out of those, due to the openings on the sides of the harness without any real bucket (conforming to your body) "seat". Nice TR! coasterboy76
Awesome Retro Photo TR!! Is it just me or did parks look alot more nicer back then? Thanks for sharing JEFF Thanks... and yes, the parks were NICER back then.. and it was like that all during my youth at the park, till around the mid 80's, and then the park started getting some rough edges. Back then we actually had people that went around all day and did nothing but sweep up trash, when I worked there, they were called gophers. and they did a great job of keeping the park neat. and believe it or not, when I was growing up. walls didn't get covered with gum like they do nowdays....gross! Jive
The dolphin tanks back then were a problem at most parks. The fountain in Spinning Dragons used to be a dolphin tank. http://www.rcdb.com/ig2572.htm?picture=

BeemerBoy
^ I bet the dolphins didn't. Seriously though, I've seen some small dolphin tanks in the past ('70s + '80s), but wow, I've probably been in hot tubs bigger than that! And the sad thing is, there's plenty of places around the world still operating like that. Anyway, sorry to stray into that mini Peta rant. The old park pics are always great to see. Thanks for showing 'em.

Here is one from the site of the tank when being built and dive show. Go visit their site, they have one of the animatronic injun joe from the dark ride in the 70's now Sally's Sccoby Doo Ghostblasters. The tank looks a little wider here. The tank looks small here, even with the guy standing in the middle.

BeemerBoy
Can't get enough of that retro goodness. It's amazing to see how clean the parks appeared back then. I guess that's when Americans still had a few morals and ethics about visiting places. Anywho, how tall were those skyride towers? Maybe it's just me, but they look freakin' huge! I'm trying to picture all the other skyrides I've ever been on (Magic Kingdom, Disneyland, BGT, SFOG, etc, etc) and it just seems like none of them were that high up. Maybe I'm wrong, and it just looks different. Can any skyride fanatics out there clarify that? It just sort of caught my eye for some strange reason. bgwfreak
They were probably about 150 ft - 200 ft tall like the ones at BGE. I love those rides and can't really understand why most of the parks took theirs out. BGE and SFOG are the only two in the southeast with them left I think.
