Its state law that says how high the fences need to be, and it varies from one state to another. For example, in MD, state law requires chain link fencing 6 feet high that is not wide enough for a ball of a certain diameter to pass through (I can't recall the exact measurement, I went through my rides training at SFA a couple years ago and have forgotten). So its not even the park's choice as to what type the fences are or their dimensions, its a matter of what the state government the park resides considers safe. Didn't realize that, which again raises the possibility of the family suing the state. Again all speculation, but with the stuff i've seen today I would not be surprised It would be pretty wild if this incident results in Georgia and other places making the laws more strict, more barriers or sign-age or something. Could end up effecting a lot of parks.

Worst Coaster Experience
Capitalize replied to airforcekid's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Same thing for me on my trip to SFStl a few years back. I took 2 early front seat rides and thought it was a freaking awesome woodie, only negative being the gerslaughter trains banging my legs up a bit. But it was good. Then I went for a final front seat ride to end my day in the late afternoon/early evening and I guess after having the day to warm up and run faster things get a bit more crazy as it was ROUGH like mad. I still thought it was a good woodie, though, all in all. I'm gonna say Viper at SFGAdv is my first choice. That ride was such crap it blew my mind. I was just praying my neck didn't snapped in half by the time we were going through the heartline roll... O yeah, SOB also. Last season when I got a front seat ride I could have never imagined a ride being so boring and so painful... That thing absolutely crawls through the last half of the ride but still manages to be painful as heck. -

Well, I've never been to the Cali parks ( ) However, I suggest Ninja. Arrow suspended coasters are fun, smooth, and thrilling enough without being over-the-top "holy crap" type of thing for a first time rider. I got my friend who was scared out of his mind of coasters on Top Gun/Flight Deck @ KI and after that he was down with coasters...

Getting stuck on a ride!
Capitalize replied to disneygurlz2s's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I've been stuck on some rides, The only time I was evac'd off a ride was Kumba at BGA a few seasons back. Thankfully the train was only a tiny bit up the lift so it was a short walk down the steps and into the station... And they gave us reentry passes for any ride in the park (even though Kumba had a wonderful zero train wait all day and we were only stuck for a few minutes), which I used to get a ride on the coaster with the longest line all day, Cheetah Chase. -

It would be nice to see NO get a new park, but I dunno if I can see it happening so soon. And after seeing that web site, I am definitely not taking those guys seriously at all... -
What got you interested in coasters?
Capitalize replied to thrillgeek's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I was scared of most coasters until I was about 10ish (my parents forced me on Beastie at KI a couple times when I was really little and that pretty much ruined riding coasters for me for a while). When I lived in Orlando in the late 90's I would ride the coasters at Magic Kingdom, but when we went to Busch Gardens Tampa you couldn't pay me to go on Kumba, Montu, or Python... I did love Scorpion, though... It wasn't until I moved to Virginia that I went to Busch Gardens Williamsburg in 1998 and reluctantly went on all the coasters, most importantly Alpengeist, that I started to love riding coasters. Its kind of funny though because before then when I was still scared of coasters I still loved learning all about them. I owned all the "America's/World's Greatest Roller Coaster Thrils" tapes and would spend lots of time on line learning about coasters... I could tell you who designed a coaster and what elements it had, but you probably couldn't get me on it. I also loved drawing and "designing" coasters ever since I was little. -

Hmm... I got to this part; "There are two big problems with this ride (besides there being no Debbie). First, as best I can tell, the kids sitting all around me have no idea who any of these actors are. Never seen any of these movies. They perk up solely at references to films that were released after 2005. Second, these aren't video clips we're watching: Those famous scenes are being performed by animatronic robots. They have waxy faces and whirring pneumatic limbs. Frankly, they're weird. And they, too, leave the kids completely cold." And just kinda stopped feeling like reading. I remember being 8 years old and thinking the great movie ride was the coolest. I don't get his gripe about the animatronic actors. Its a long and boring rant that doesn't really go anywhere... I'll probably keep reading it tonight, but meh, I'm not impressed so far. Sounds like he went in there already wanting to rip the place apart and b****, which to me means he wasted a few days of his life and plenty of money. I wouldn't describe myself as a disney fan boy/slave person. But I always loved living in Orlando and going to the parks every weekend and still definitely love going to the parks once every few years for a few days just because its a really nice, fun experience. I guess some people will go for a ride on spaceship earth or splash mountain and think its fantastic, others won't... Whatever, everyone can have an opinion, but I certainly fall in the pro group. I also don't like it when people hate on Walt Disney... Ever since I did a presentation on him in the 4th grade I've always looked up to him and thought he was a great person. -

Line jumping at the DLR
Capitalize replied to MisterP's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
In my experiences the people cutting lines are mostly posses of kids, if you call them out and yell at them they'll normally straighten up and fly right, although occasionally with some smart comments under their breath while walking away... At WDW I've never noticed line jumping being a problem. Seems to me people down there won't stand for it. If you cut in line you can expect to have a whole family of angry tourists jumping on you, throwing you to the back of the line. -

In my experiences operating rides if I see people cut in line or if someone tells me (and can back it up wiith other witnesses) someone cut in front of them, I will tell them they can't ride and will force them to leave the line and try again, this time waiting in line like a normal person. I have to admit it was fun telling 12 year old punks off.... -

Rebel Yell in the back beat the crap out of me on Saturday as well. Every hill was petty miserable, at least there's decent airtime on the first drop and and turnaround back there. I'm surprised you hated Grizzly that much... I thought it was far better in the front this year then last, much smoother and more air. I got airtime on every hill and it was very smooth up there... When I rode in the back it was the same as always, insane as heck and boarder line painful... Its rough back there, but I think its worth it for the insanity in the tunnel, the airtime and lats on that little hill in there are awesome, imho. -

Anyone know what Busch does to their inverts where there isn't a problem in the rain? I've spent many days in spring riding Alpie in the pouring rain and never heard/seen any problems like SF and CP has. -

My mini-non-photo itinerary of my day: - Arrived at 1ish, got passes, - gawked at Dominator, - Flying Eagles - Grizzly, - Hurler, - weeped at the lose of backwards Rebel Yell while "enjoying" forwards, - Drop Tower, - Shockwave (not as painful as I remember...), - Swings (lady friend loves these things... meh) - lunch at the unnamed shrimp place, - Backlot Stunt Coaster - Anaconda - Avalanche - A final ride on Grizzly (surprisingly long line at this point because of one train operation) - Left around 6ish Volcano had issues when I was around congo and had a bit of a long line, same with FoF, and I have a puppy at home so I would have felt bad leaving him all alone at home all day and night... Its cool, I'll be back at least once more before Dominator opens and plenty after that. Edit: I'm definitely not crazy about "Drop Tower", and I was hoping they would put something down (some planters or something) in the old XLC site so it wasn't just a big blank slab of pavement, but its cool. -

That was my issue though, I don't understand why Busch can keep their B&M inverts operating rain or shine all season while Cedar Point can't. Seems they could take a page out of Busch's operating procedure and fix that problem. I got the number 15 from the attendant standing at the front of ride after I asked her about the policy and Magnum's accident. I dunno if she/Mean Streak's crew that day were confused or if they just felt like telling me a random number for some reason, but thats what I was told. -

Normal procedure on light days. JEFF I found it interesting because last season I remember them running half of it all year during all my visits after the incident at SFKK.
