Surprise crotch buster
Capitalize replied to Rollerman87's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I vote for Volcano at KD... The g forces in the first inversion push the restraint down and half the time it ends of hurting down stairs. -
I think locals don't feel that way (in terms of it closing soon) because in all honesty it just is what it is, its been the same general way for so many years now you just get used to mediocrity year after year. To say the least SFA is seriously neglected. I am in all honesty very pissed as a stock holder in the chain because to me they just keep squandering opportunity after opportunity to improve the place. They could have easily sent SFNE's Dark Knight down to SFA, and it would have been a fine attraction for the park, a well themed family ride that would generate some interest in the park in the DC area, but instead they're going to send it all the way down to Mexico as rumors indicate?

I did find #1 very interesting, when I visited SFGAdv and saw their neon shirts I was confused as to why SFA still had blue uni's. That said I prefer the blue ones... There is no reason for the park to use QBot. QBot works well for the parks like SFGAdv because all major rides have an hour+ line. SFA has 15 minute or less lines for everything except Batwing and occasionally SROS. You would not see many people willing to spend the extra cash on 90% of the days the park is open for a QBot. Having gone through the training on numerous rides at SFA and visited other SF parks it seems to me the standard operating procedure are for the most the same. The only large difference I ever notice is the attendants on the load side have to check heights because they rarely have enough staff to put someone at the entrance to rides. (except of course the rides that require a locker, getting that extra locket money is crucial. ) All I can really think is that all the high school kids that were working at the park all summer and had the operation/spiels/etc. down pat have returned to school so the park has unfamiliar people op'ing/attending rides.

I was thinking mostly about the "same people working there" aspect of his post. When I was working there I was one of 3-4 workers who were not african american in the rides department. Since then it appears based on my trips the ride department is essentially entirely african american... I'm probably putting too much thought into it, but thats the way I'm understanding it.

this could easilly lead us down that ugly road talking about racism and what people really mean when they call the place "ghetto". *shrug* most the time I have a great time at the park. Add in some decent attractions and recruit enough employs to properly staff the park every day and you'll see things looking great there. Amen, there are some world class rides there. It's just the worst theme park atmosphere ever. Concrete, hot, 10 minuets to dispatch one train on Batwing, and bad employees. And burned buildings sitting around aparently. The rides make the visit worth it, but once im done riding them there's no reason for me to be there, and the atmosphere doesn't make me want to come back as much as say go to another park. I basically get a pass every year so I can get loads of rides on SROS and Wild One, the other decent coasters are nice pluses as well. But as far as atmosphere goes, like you said, it isn't the most pleasant place to spend a day. I feel some sympathy for the employees at SFA, though (in part because I was one), it can be incredibly tough and annoying working there. Essentially you're getting paid minimum wage to operate poorly maintained rides that have a tendency to break down a lot. You are the one who has to spend an hour explaining to pissed off guests why half the rides are closed all day and the ones that are open are only operating at half of their full capacity while they yell at you even though its completely out of your hands. All the while you have to call in to get a bathroom break and wait around for an hour before someone finally shows up... I know some of the employees are downright terrible and even when I was working there I wanted to yell at them to do their job better, but I still have sympathy for many of them simply because its easy to blow off the 100th guest that week to chew you out because Superman broke and Tower of Doom is only operating 2 of its 3 sides. Essentially, to me there are much greater issues at SFA that help lead to the employees being downright crummy that should be resolved first and foremost.

Ha, you guys think the park is dead now, just wait until winter when not a sole is on the beaches. Them staying open over the winter is a stupid idea in my opinion. It's summer when kids are not in school, college kids are home, and families are on vacation. That doesn't happen in the winter. Im surprised this hasn't came up as often. They have to lose a lot more money in the winter then they are now. Exactly, I used to go to Myrtle Beach with family over thanksgiving break and there was hardly anyone there. After I found out HRP was planning on staying open all year I was scratching my head as to how they would pull that one off. In any case, I'm going to Myrtle Beach to get to HRP and and finally get on Swamp Fox in a week, so I will see just what the deal with this joint is then.

Yeah but they conveniently "damaged" it during deconstruction & transport. After adding only one lousy waterslide for 2008 there was a reason that I didn't renew my season pass because that one attraction, which I'm not even the slightest bit interested in simply couldn't justify the $60.00 expense of a season pass. Now if they were to add maybe a decent flat or two(doesn't neccesarily HAVE to be be a coaster) & change many of their assinine policies then maybe I'll give the park another chance but until that happens I'm simply not going to waste the time & money going there. Oh common, a great intamin hyper, a decent GCI woodie, an awesome classic out and back woodie, a vekoma flying dutchman, and a fun premier launch coaster with NO wait during weekdays? How is that NOT worth the the >$60 season pass price if you live reasonably close? I honestly find it hard to justify NOT buying a pass when its so cheap and so close to home...

Beyond vertical drops

I've only been on Maverick, but I love the sweet ejector air on the first drop. -

They should build it as close to 95 as possible, great views of the traffic on 95 North and South! "Oohh! Is that Aunt Sarah's Pancake House?!" -
New Vekoma Flyer in China 2008

Based on the 3 flying dutchmen coasters I've been on and the 2 SUF's, I have to say I love the flying dutchmen. The vertical loop alone is fantastic, the first drop and huge overbank is also awesome as heck. I'd say I'm pretty pumped to see some new designs and flying coaster ideas from them. -

Everytime I've been there this season Berserker has been packed with Dominator's opening next door, seems unnecessary to remove it at this point to me. -

Thats weird, I've seen one there both times I've been in line. They don't really do much... Like they don't seem to interact with the guests as much as the CP ones do, but they're there. I've only been on Dominator and to KD on Saturdays so far this season, though, might just be a weekend thing? I'll be going down this Thursday so I shall see. -

Well those were the Paramount days, Cedar Fair clearly has different plans for the park. Paramount would have never added Dominater the way CF did. And they certainly wouldn't have added one of those awesome DJ booths in the line. -
I miss the enterprise (Sky Escaper), I remember having a moment of sadness while riding Wild One one year as they were keeping all the cars right next to its lift for the season after it was first taken out. The Tilt-a-Whirl was junk... Avalanche is pretty meh as well, and it looks pretty crummy having a carnival model flat at a "major" park like a Six Flags... Iron Eagle was pretty sweet but it was down the majority of the time. When it was open it always seemed to be on the less crowded days where you'd have small groups of kids spend half an hour running around trying to get enough people together so they could operate it... They needed 12 people to run it if I remember correctly.
