Kings Dominion (KD) Discussion Thread
Password121 replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
After seven years though they should get one. This is a huge misconception. New coasters aren't built based on "need" or just whenever they've waited long enough. They're built when it's a smart investment that could have the best ROI. If a park has steadily growing attendance and hasn't built a new coaster in ten years, why spend money for no reason? -

In 2015 Canada's Wonderland will absolutely destroy Cedar Point in attendance. I wouldn't be surprised to see the difference reach .75 million. That doesn't mean CW is more profitable though. It's all about profit--attendance is just a factor towards profit. -
Worlds of fun built a 10 million dollar drop slide complex in 2013 and added the dinos So. It's hard to complain when MiA hasn't gotten a completely new coaster in what, 14 years or something crazy like that? Ahh, totally forgot. My point still stands about the super loops and Six Flags though--you can't argue that SF doesnt completely ignore it's smaller parks.

This, has to be one of the most infantile posts I've ever seen here on TPR! I mean, not only are you making ridiculous assertions (going to a SF park will kill you - "I prefer to live"), and speak of things you admit you don't know (you've never been to a park, but you're going to say what they look like inside?), you also completely misrepresent my post (ignoring all the good things I mentioned CF has done for their parks), and you insult me personally, as if you know anything about me, my intelligence, or my business acumen (which is actually quite stellar!) On top of that, your rant (which is all it is - a CF fanboy rant) is written poorly, and is about as nuanced as having a tank fall on one's head. Lastly, while by one definition I may be an "enthusiast" (anybody posting on TPR or any other fansite has to be to an extent), I have actually been out of the enthusiast loop for almost ten years, raising a family, and interacting with mostly non enthusiasts. I actually have a perspective on the industry that is very heavily steeped in GP and non-enthusiast outlook, and understanding. So again, please don't make assertions about me that are baseless, and that you'd have no possibility of actually knowing! If you are so disappointed in the rides CF is adding why have one of the amazing additions as your display picture. I just hate how all these smaller park fan boys expect a coaster, great additions are not always coasters. Larson loopers for everyone if we started thinking Six Flags mentality. I'd take a Larson loop any day over what CF's smaller parks have been getting. Let's compare a small SF park to a similarly sized CF park. Say... SFA with Worlds of Fun. In the last three years at SFA, they've built a multi million dollar drop slide complex, completely overhauled Southwest Territory with a wild mouse, Larson flyers and a Super Loop this year. A waterpark expansion is pretty much guaranteed next year. Worlds of Fun has built basically nothing in 2013, a relocated, problem-filled Windseeker last year, and a kiddie splash pad. They're adding five kiddie rides next year for probably a couple million. You could actually argue that WoF is a larger park than SFA, and yet I'd take SFA's additions every day of the week over WoF's. And seriously, did you read his post? He never said he hates CF, he said they've done some great things so why is it an issue that one of those things is his picture?

As for a poll, I think it's overwhelmingly clear which coaster most people prefer, so I'm not sure a poll is really needed to determine that! Also, as one of the few KK preferring people, I will say that both of my rides on it have been in the front, so maybe that makes a difference? At any rate, I can definitely say, that at least for me, I prefer a front seat ride on KK to a front seat ride on TTD! That is a huge determining factor. Out of about five KK rides last weekend, two were in the front. After those rides, I wanted to hop right back in line and was *almost* ready to put it in front of Dragster. However, on my other rides throughout the train (including row 3, 4, and 7 I think), it was just so mediocre because it was just ridiculously rough. It was like the trains weren't meant to handle such ridiculous speeds. All in all, a front seat ride on either coaster is a toss up, but anywhere else I'd give it to Dragster without even thinking about it.

I don't see it for 2012, but I'd love to see a hyper (or giga) coaster at this park. At this point it seems large enough to support a $20+ million investment and it's something obviously lacking in the ride selection. -
To be perfectly honest the only part of that entire area by Nitro that looks good is Congo Rapids. Nitro needs a repaint bad, Batman is okay but getting a little smudgy, the pavement and Nitro's area looks terrible, and Wiggles World needs to chill. The colors are too much and it's weird how Skull Mountain exits into four-year-old land.

You really have to ride in the back row to get what we're talking about. The front row is fun too for the opposite reason--the push factor through the right corners, but the back seat is just like "wtf is happening?" Come to think of it, and I'm being completely serious here... Skull Mountain is my number six coaster in the park. For me, I'd say it's 1) El Toro 2) Nitro 3) Kingda Ka 4) Batman 5) Bizarro 6) Skull Mountain The way I rank coasters is how big of a smile I have when I come back to the station. This is how it turned out for me, and if it's not the same for you, then that's awesome! We all enjoy coasters and it does not matter who prefers which ones over others.

Very interesting offseason. I love the realism of removing the Intamin Freefall, and the Camp Snoopy additions seem very classic Cedar Fair. Very well done. -
After riding Ka all over the train last weekend, I can confidently say that Dragster is the better ride. You can nitpick about the theming, colors, launch intensity, view, restraints, etc... But Kingda Ka is incredibly rough anywhere except the front whenever the ride is traveling above 70mph or so. This is the one coaster I am perfectly willing to wait an extra 30 minutes for the front, that's how bad it is anywhere else.

Um....Intimidator 305 says hello. Wow that was one of the most incorrect statements ever. Volcano, Hypersonic, and I-305 were all risky investments. And wait... BGW?? Lol the park with three B&M's, a family launcher, a tried and true launcher, and an old looper? What, is Mach Tower "risky" because it's always broken? Hypersonic and Volcano were built before CF owned the park. I305 was huge, but it was nothing risky. The chain had already built a gigs coaster at the time and had been working with INTAMIN at the time. So... Pre-CF Kings Dominion is not the same park as post-CF Kings Dominion? Why does it matter when Kings Dominion built those rides? And if you don't think a $25 million terrain hugging, first of its kind giga coaster isn't a slight risk, you're crazy. Why have only Cedar Fair parks built giga coasters in North America? Because any investment that major is very risky, *especially* a coaster like I-305. -

Giant Frisbees are fantastic rides. A huge upgrade for a quiet section of the park. Interesting they chose the same name as Kings Island's version. How does this model compare to Cedar Point's in terms of size? -

Before this gets lost 2016 discussion, I'm thinking of going for a 2016 platinum pass as they just went on sale. Concerning the free visit in 2015, are any discount friend tickets available for this visit? For example, utilizing a remaining 2015 discounted ticket. I'm not currently a CF passholder. -

I'd bet this has nothing major to do with Racer. All the time parks use filler images for social media of recognizable park icons. Racer is a symbol of progress and they're talking about an attraction announcement date. It makes sense and it's easy for them to create buzz. -

If the announcement were to be in December, we would at least see the layout of the footers and the lift hill/drop at the very least in place by then so honestly it wouldn't make a huge difference for enthusiasts. We would know if the leaked plans are real or not (I have a suspicion they are). -
Anyone know the descent angle on this coaster? I'm curious if it'll be more like B&M's traditional hypers around 70 degrees, or more like Shambhala/Leviathan/Fury around 80+ degrees. Also, why hasn't anyone talked about that first element? It's a little harder to see in the concept art but it looks extremely overbanked, almost borderline top-hat like.

This is pretty neat thread. I'll post these as they come into my mind, I don't have the patience to make it alphabetical lol. B&M-Inverts (haven't ridden all that many but Raptor and Batman kick all kinda of behind) Intamin--Prefab/Giga (looked though my list of fav Intamins and I have El Toro followed by both Gigas so not sure which to choose overall) Vekoma--Flying Dutchman (they're not *that* bad) Premier--Spaghetti bowl launchers GCI--Idk... something smoother than Roar Arrow--Log Flumes/hyper (haven't ridden Magnum on a good day so I need to give it credit as it was at least 'okay') Larson--haven't ridden their drop tower so I guess flying scooters I'll basically stop there because I'm not a huge flat ride person and I haven't travelled all too much.
