Cedar Point (CP) Discussion Thread
Hilltopper39 replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I was there less than 2 months ago and have seen the area a million other times, I know what it looks like. This isn't RCT where coasters are just a footprint of the track and supports. Where are you going to put in an access road for maintenance and/or emergency vehicles? What if a fire truck needs to get in there? What about a crane to remove/put on the trains in the fall/spring...or to possibly lift in new parts? Not to mention, what if TTD's cable breaks? A ride there (let alone all the people in that area as well) would potentially be prone to being hit by shrapnel from it...hence why Kingda Ka's queue is nowhere near that area (let alone another ride) and had to be moved from it's original location. It could be done, there is plenty of room there for a small footprint coaster. How many wild mouse coasters have access roads under them? On most coasters the only place that is accessible by fire truck or service vehicle is the station anyways so i don't see why having a ride within the restricted space is an issue (every coaster track area is a restricted area). A crane to put trains on and take them off aren't that big and those are the kind of things that would have to be taken into consideration during the rides design. Just Look at Indiana Beach, and Grona Lund, there is plenty of space for a coaster to be built there. If dragster's cable explodes the people on the path right next to the launch track would be in as much trouble as the people in the infield. I really don't think that Cedar Point will be build a coaster inside of Dragster's infield but I'm just saying that realistically they could. Sometime in future to build new attractions Cedar Point is going to have to either remove existing existing attractions to free up the space or start squeezing rides into every inch of available space that exists in the park. As far as I can see the combination of Dragster's infield, the station for paddle wheel excursion and part of the island for Millennium force across from the paddle wheel station is about as big of open section of land that there currently is in the park. -

Yeah, RCDB says it cost 8 billion yen which is like 100 Million US dollars which is ridiculious to me. Disney attractions always seem to cost a hell of a lot more than they should. How does Raging Spirits cost as much as Everest? And how does Everest cost $100 Million to begin with? -

That evac elevator is located directly under the tower itself and wouldn't be in the way. The falling objects would likely be the biggest reason for a ride to not get built in that area, more of an issue that the space. -

^ What if they re-used the River Boat ride station area as the new coaster Que and station area (hasn't it been rumored that they may get ride of the river boat anyways?) that is just adjacent to the tower structure on Dragster? That wouldn't muddle up the Midway any, and If you had 65 foot tall wild mouse at the base of a 420 foot tall tower I don't think it would murder the atmosphere that much especially since the que line and launch viewing area for Dragster are on the complete opposite end of the ride. I'm only talking about using the small amount of green space between the launch motor building and the tower itself, and maybe the area of the (possibly soon to be former) Paddle Wheel Excursion Boat ride station house. That Paddle Wheel Excursion station is right on the edge of Camp Snoopy, a custom Gerstlauer bobsled coaster would more or less be a family coaster, I think it would be a nice fit and give Dragster a unique perspective for comparison. http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=41.484803,-82.686992&spn=0.001155,0.002411&t=h&z=19 -

Real said it best, where is there room to build anything there? It's hardly a "giant open field" at all. You have the queue (which fills on busy days) and transfer track, then an access road for utility vehicles, then the building for the hydraulic motor, then a small section of grass which has spotlights for the tower. After all that you're running into the supports for the tower. On one side you have Iron Dragon and the water around Millennium Island, and on the other you have a very skinny midway with Corkscrew, Power Tower, Perimeter Road, and the Breakers parking lot (which fills during peak time). It's amazing they were able to squeeze TTD in where it is, let alone another coaster also. Keep in mind that coasters are a lot more than just track and footers...electrical, water, hydraulic fluids (possibly) all need running, not to mention lift/launch motors, queues/exits, transfer track, handicap ramps, etc. Cedar Point has shown great creativity in the past, but this might be pushing it. Oh you just have to have a little imagination, there's plenty of room there. All 3 models of the S&S El Loco are less than 50 feet wide at their base. I'm sure a Euro Fighter would could be shoe horned in there, maybe a dueling side by side Zac Spin, half pipe coaster. I'd love to see a Custom wild mouse that jumps over and under and around Dragster and the adjacent Midway (like Vilda Musen at Grona Lund), Heck maybe even a custom woodie like Twister at Grona Lund could probably fit in there if done right. There's plenty of room there, not saying that's where the new ride is going to go because it probably isn't but there is enough room. Next time your at Cedar Point look at that field, it's a lot bigger than it looks in Google Earth. -

Wow, this place looks amazing. One of these days I'm going to get over there. I wonder if a third gate will ever be in the works for Tokyo. Great update though, really enjoyed reading it. -

^ The one in Jamaica is actually in Ocho Rios, Jamaica about a mile away from the cruise ship terminal. I rode it back around April and don't specifically remember the coast was ridiculously expensive. You had to pay to ride the Chair lift up in a package that included either chair lift, mountain coaster, and zip line tour, or only zip line, or only coaster, etc. The full out package was $137 a person according to the website. You could also purchase an extra coaster ride after your initial ride at one ride for $10 or 3 for $20 (I think that's what it was). -

Personally I don't think that Cedar Point can wrong with anything ZacSpin, Flyer, Dive Machine, Floorless, Woodie, Racing woodie, they really have a lot to choose from as far as a new coaster that is different than something they have. Would anyone 's feelings be hurt if they removed the Mine Ride and installed a new custom Gerstlauer Bobsled coaster? I'm kind of surprised no parks in America have built any of those yet. They all look like awesome family style coasters and I've heard nothing but good things about them from everyone on TPR trips. They're not exactly capacity monsters but oh well. **Also, is there any reason from an operations standpoint that Cedar Point couldn't build a coaster in the infield of Top Thrill Dragster? Always seemed like a giant open field to me that some type of coaster would fit into fairly well. Maybe like a Vekoma motobike or something. -
^Of all the Six Flags Parks Ive been to in my day Id say SFOG is by far one of the best. Top 3-5 at least. Has a classic Schwartkopf looper, couple of decent woodies, 4 B&M's, a very unique dark ride, and some decent original atmosphere I'd definately consider it one of Six Flags' flagship parks. Haven't bougt my tickets yet but will soon, can't wait for the event!

In Tampa the Lowry Park Zoo is nice and depending on what time of day and what your personal interest are Ybor City can be a fun place. I've always had a good time there during the day just grabbing lunch and hanging out, but can't vouch for the nightlife there. There are a few good restaurants, and hand rolled cigar shops and historic buildings and stuff. I don't know if WDW is back to running Fantasmic every night, or if they will be the time of year you visit or not so be careful (if you interested in seeing it) and make sure you go to The Studios park on a day they're actually showing Fantasmic. They used to offer a showing once a week for for Extra Magic Hours which was always less crowded and easier to find a seat than the showing during the regular hours. Coco beach is a kinda crappy beach, it is close to the port but the town it self is just okay. Daytona is only about an hour away from Port Canaveral and is a much better beach town IMO. with a lot more to do. It is a little touristy and can be a bit dirty at times but that time of year before the Spring Break and Bike Week crowds arrive it should be okay. There are some nice beachfront restaurants and and a Boardwalk Arcade with a bunch of vintage arcade games and ski ball machines which is one of my favorite places around (it's really nothing more than a kinda dirty old arcade but it's always had a lot of charm to me and is always a lot of fun). If you're at all into NASCAR (or if your not) the museum at the Dayton Motor Speedway is pretty cool, and a tour of the track is pretty impressive to even just the casual fan. If your just crashing for the night Cocoa is probably fine but if you are actually looking to spend a day somewhere I'd definitely take Daytona over Cocoa Beach (others may disagree but eh). Yeah in Nassau either do an excursion or stay on the boat. There are some decent duty free shops only a couple blocks from the port if your looking for liquor/jewelry/gifts etc but honestly the prices for most of that stuff is just as good on the boat with a lot less headache. We compared liquor prices on and off the ship and it was only a few dollars cheaper in Nassau than on the boat. We had a lot of fun at Coco Cay last week, but it is a small Island and Royal Caribbean up charges to do EVERYTHING! The snorkeling area was actually really nice with some sunken ships and cannons and planes for man made reefs and at $30 for equipment all day was probably the best value (IMO) on the island. There is a really pretty nature trail that leads all the way to end of the island that is a very pretty walk and puts you on a beach with almost no one around. It's about a 1 mile walk but is very pretty, I'd recommend it. -

I'm gonna go ahead and call it now, for CP in 2013, a worlds first from B&M an 8 across dive machine like FLYING coaster! Yes an 8 wide flyer, I was told by someone a few year ago that Manta at SeaWorld Orlando was originally supposed to be an 8 wide flyer but they pushed the project ahead a few years and B&M wasn't done with developing the ride system so they went with a standard flyer instead. If ya think about it an 8 person wide 3 row train would look a lot more like an actual Manta Ray then the trains do now (that might be why they added the manta shaped zero car, it's the only flyer with one). AN 8 wide flyer would make perfect sense sense for Cedar Point, new coaster, first of it's kind, record breaker of some sort, something completely different than what they have now and different than the flyer Kings Island has, and it would probably be awesome. Mark it 8 dude -

^ Other than the 90 degree turn in the tunnel Hades really doesn't have that many overly aggressive transitions, but I agree the PTC's are probably a huge reason for the roughness on those 3 coasters. Look how much Gwazi was improved when they removed the PTC's. I really hope the Timberliners do the job but as of right now it's hard to tell because the only two sets in operation are on fairly small wooden coasters (Twister at Grona Lund and Wooden Warrir at Quassy). I cant wait to see how those trains operate on a full sized ride. -
Holiday World (HW) Discussion Thread
Hilltopper39 replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Yeah, I still ran it as a top 10 because of the rides I got on it the first couple of years but it has slid. On a side note you ever notice that every wooden coaster in the top 10 for height and drop is either a silky smooth sexy new intamin pre-fab or a brutal rough spine cruncher? 1. Son of Beast brutal 2. El Toro pre-fab 3. Colossus pre-fab 4. Voyage debatable but brutal 5. T-Express pre-fab 6. Boss never ridden it but I've never heard anyone rave about it's smoothness or about how great it is 7. American Eagle same as above 8. Beast eh, not awful but I believe it for the most part fits this trend 9. Hades brutal 10. Montezuma brutal I'd be willing to bet if you kept going down the list of wooden coasters ranked by height you wouldn't start to see consistently smooth re-rideable coasters until you got around and under 100 ft. There may be an exceptionally smooth coaster over 100ft or an unusually rough coaster under 100 feet here and there but I think that wood as a material for coaster track has it's limitations and Voyage pushes WAY past it's limit. -
Holiday World (HW) Discussion Thread
Hilltopper39 replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
The triple down is about the only good thing left on this ride. It dropped to my least favorite coaster in the park after my visit this year. It's just too brutal and bordering on not being fun anymore. Sad too, cause it used to be in my top fifteen wood. agreed and agreed. That thing was incredible it's opening year, but even when it was still smooth and re ride-able it was still a really intense coaster just due to the sheer size, speed and forces. Now that it has a few year of age on it it's pretty brutal, and almost impossible to re-ride. I really hope the timberliner trains make the ride experience more tolerable and return that thing t it's former state (if they ever get those things operational). I will give Holiday World credit though, if the voyage were at any Cedar Fair or Six Flags park they would probably would of trimmed the hell out of it after the first couple of seasons. -
It was $17 and change (including the drink), but very worth it! Much better than if I had spent it on a lukewarm burger and mushy fries. Eh, that's not awful I guess. The past couple of trips I've taken to Cedar Fairs parks it felt like the food prices were getting a little out of control but oh well. If a $15 hot dog helps pay for a $25million dollar Beamer I'm okay with it;.
-
I'll hate, Millennium Force is a very average coaster with a top 10 first drop. Great pictures though and still a great park. How much was the Pinks hot dog and onion rings? by Cedar Fair standards that was probably about $30 worth of food. Maverick, Magnum, and Raptor are still my favorite coasters in the park, good to hear blue steak is running well.

Definitely the 2nd generation standard Giant Drop towers with the individual 4 person ride vehicles. Those seem like they high a much better sensation of free fall compared to the gyro drop with it's gigantic 40 seat ring (from a physics perspective I believe it has to do with the moment of inertia for the smaller vehicle being much smaller than the MOI of the larger rings. While both "objects" fall at the same rate (gravity) the smaller vehicle accelerates up to the maximum falling speed much quicker than the larger ring of seats). The floor less stand-ups like Acrophobia are a close second because they are insanely scary, but they do hurt my nuts and are not as re-ride able.

My Yard Goes Disney-HGTV
Hilltopper39 replied to the ghost's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I wanna see HGTV do a show called "My Bathroom Goes Disney" and theme a toilet to the New Journey into Imagination attraction. Every time the guests successfully lays a monster stink log Nigel Channing's creepy moon face head pops out and sings One Little Spark. A second toilet could also be themed to a Giant Sorcerer's hat and they could put it right in the middle of a house's main entrance hallway about 10 feet behind the front door (ya know so it looks cool but basically ruins the architect's original design). The first idea should also be an attraction at future Halloween Horror Nights events. -
Dania Beach Hurricane Declares Bankruptcy

I wonder what kind of numbers the Miami/ Lauderdale areas get annually for tourism specifically cruise departures? I know it's one of the more popular cruise ports in America and I would think that for families coming in a day early or staying a day late after the cruise to catch a flight might be interested in spending a day at a really nice waterpark/zoo/theme park type combo property. You would think the crowds that go on cruises and that would go to a theme park are a fairly similar demographic. -
