During that big one that knocked out the entire Northeast in August 2003, we were coming back from Algonquin Park (2.5 hours north of Toronto, 8 hours away from here). I was scheduled to go to Cedar Point for the first time the next day, but around 4:00 we were passing by Canada's Wonderland, and none of the coasters were running. People were being evac'ed, etc.
My Dad turns on the radio, and there's no stations coming in. We're like, "Ooooookay...WTF?" Then, one station comes in and says they're on a backup generator, and power's knocked out from North Bay down to Ohio.
They didn't know if it was the work of terrorists or not (I guessed not), but they said a power plant in Niagara Falls had something happen to it. I looked in the direction of N.F. (at this point, we were driving kinda close to it), and there was a plume of smoke.
When we got home, we ended up having an uber-huge pool party by flashlight, etc... Best night of my life
Didn't get to the Point 'till two days later
