What are some loud rides and coasters?
AllenA07 replied to JFrombaugh's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I'll throw in my vote for Superman, however I'm also going to give an honorable mention to Flashback (SFMM) when it used to run. I don't know how many people had the chance to stand over near it while it open, but that coaster had a deafening roar. Premier Launch coasters are also pretty loud, but I don't think they really compete with Superman. In terms of Hypersonic, I have some family that used to live near the S&S test ground in Utah. I remember them telling me stories of seeing Thrust Air 2000 (later Hypersonic) test and how incredibly loud the ride was. Apparently on a quite day they could hear it for quite some distance from the facility itself. -
Weirdest Things The 'GP' Have Said
AllenA07 replied to maliboomer's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
^You're right that that story doesn't have much point, nor is it all that shocking and/or stupid. -
I know it'll make me sound bad following my earlier comments, but I have been thinking really hard for the last couple months about putting some money into Six Flags. This is the time where it might be worth the risk to buy, seeing as how that stock is at really low levels. If I felt like I had a little more money to throw around I do think I would jump into the frey and invest some money on Six Flags now while the cost is low.
-
I'm not exactly sure what you're asking or if I came off wrong, but right now I don't think people are interested in Six Flags stock. The economy is bad right now, therefore I think Six Flags is a risky investment. On the other hand if it starts to look like the economy is turning around, it might not be such a bad idea to invest in Six Flags and see if that stock rises with the economy. However I think that is still some time off right now.
-
This doesn't surprise me in the least. Parks are very dependant upon the economy, when people have money they like to spend it on things like vacations to amusement parks. When the economy is failing people hold onto that money more carefully then they would have before, and for most people trips to amusement parks are an easy thing to cut. This is an industry that is going to always be based on how much spare cash people have in their pockets. Right now people's pockets are running low. Six Flags is a huge company, which means that in times of economic prosperity they're going to see more benefits then a smaller company. Likewise when the economy is down they're going to hurt more then a smaller company. The difference is that (to a point) Six Flags can take losses better then small companies that own only one park. Do I think it would be out of the question that Six Flags does shed more of its parks? Not at all, in fact if the company can unload a couple of their parks and try to balance themselves right now it might not be such a bad idea. Do I think Six Flags is going to cease operation? No, the company is big enough that with a substantial sell off of certain assists (smaller parks, assuming buyers could be found) it should be able to weather this storm.

Speed: The Ride in Las Vegas .... Closed?
AllenA07 replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
In terms of prices do also remember that this is the off season for the city. With that said, prices are down this year without any doubt. I stayed at the Palms for $90 a night back in August, a time of year that was in the middle of the cities busy season. I did however just drop almost $800 for 3 nights in Vegas for this coming New Year, so there are still some events that the city is gouging for. -

Needing a "normal center of gravity to ride"? Does that mean no fat people allowed? Or just no people who have disproportionate fat? -

The Busch Gardens in LA closed a long time ago, I'm sure however there are a few people on this site that are old enough to have the chance to go. It was located at the brewery off the 405 in Van Nuys. I believe that the land today is owned partially by the brewery and (I'm going purely by pictures I've seen) the LAX fly-away. -
I agree with Robb, I thought it was funny.

I remember Psyclone when it was running backwards (was that Fright Fest 94?) but I was either too small (or more likely) too much of a wuss to try it out. However from what I understand Psyclone wasn't nearly as rough for the first couple years of existence. For those of you who did try it, what did you think of Psyclone backwards?

I actually think Circus Circus is safe for some time to come. It is a niche hotel which still serves a purpose. I wouldn't expect rides to survive at many other hotels (i.e. Manhattan Express), however I just don't think Circus Circus or the adventure dome is going anywhere quickly. -

I fully agree that losing this coaster doesn't really change much in Vegas. As I said a few pages ago, I can't remember the last time I went on one of the rides in the city. If I'm feeling like thrill rides Vegas just isn't the place I go. When I'm in Vegas I'm looking for a kind of entertainment completely different then what I want on the strip. -

Speed was a decent ride, in my opinion the best one in Vegas. However with that said I personally wouldn't really miss it, I cannot remember the last time I went on a coaster while in Vegas. -
Body found at Six Flags Fiesta Texas
AllenA07 replied to AllenA07's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I'm not an expert on dead bodies or anything, but I would think that after a year of being exposed to the elements, there wouldn't be a whole lot left to smell. -
Just saw this news article and thought I'd pass it along: The link to the article: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,427981,00.html So I'm just wondering how the body got there, and furthermore how it was just now found. Possibly a guest or an employee wandered back there and got hit (maybe buried) by falling rocks?

I really liked the idea of a HRP in theory, however everything about it seemed to come up short. Not to mention they open at a time when the economy is bad, in an area with so much competition. This park was killed by a combination of factors, and even if they reopen next year I don't see any easy way to remedy the situation.

I don't think $5 for all the mazes is going to be a problem, in fact I think it is a good move on the part of SFMM. I had disagreed with the move when I thought it was going to be $5 per maze. However if for $5 you get the entire package I could see the park pulling in a nice amount of revenue without upsetting the guests to the point that they pass on the mazes all together. As for the new ride being built, now that we know something is going on, all we really can do is sit back and wait for the announcement. The thing with wood is that other then knowing it's a wooden coaster, there really isn't a whole lot else we can tell. With steel you can see the track, get an idea (sometimes) of inversions, and generally tell the type of coaster (standup, floorless, upside-down spiral of death, and so forth) that is going to be installed. With wood when you look at the track you're going to see just that, wood. Not a whole lot more descriptive then going down to the local Home Depot and checking out the Lumber section trying to figure out what your house will look like when finished. With that said I can't wait for the thousands of pictures of dirt moving around and holes being dug into the ground, because watching a coaster grow is just plain fun! In terms of an announcement I'm still maintaining that we will not hear anything until November/December. I'm simply going on the prior history of the park, and the fact that they seem to like to let Fright Fest come and go before saying anything. It should be a fun few months to follow coming up!
