Six Flags Over Texas (SFOT) Discussion Thread
GigaG replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Even though theme parks can't exist without the GP, at the same time, it seems like the GP absolutely can ruin amusement parks. Seriously, even Cedar Fair is affected - they are putting seatbelts on B&M hypers, which a load of absolute bull poo. -
Large Kid on Slingshot

If his head had slipped under, the lap belt and belts under the arms probably would have stopped him from falling. -

Because knowing the GP they would complain because "Six Flags never did anything about that ride where the lady flew out" At least this way they can SEE that Six Flags is "trying" even if it may be insane... At least it puts the GP at ease. At least that is what I have convinced my self of as being the reason SFOT is going to such crazy extremes. So they need to appease the GP by publicly using a "TSA checkpoint"? Wow. -

I know I keep asking this, but what is less friendly to overweight people-Intamin t-bars or IRat/NTAG bars? I might be going to SFOT soon. -

So how much of a coaster is it? I saw a testing video of it going through a banked turn quite quickly, if I remember correctly. -
Coaster enthusiast vote - 99% lapbar, 1% OTSR Explanation - When properly installed and checked, lapbars are not unsafe, especially with the seatbelts that Intamin would likely put on this. GP vote - 1% lapbar, 99% OTSR Explanation - OMG ITZ SO HIGH AND FAST IT NEEDS SHOULDER RESTRAINTS OR YOU'LL FLY OUT AT 10000000 MILES PER HOUR!

Never seen that much noticeable swaying on a steel coaster (although Wicked Twister sways a bit.) Wood is another story. Check this out- Of course, a coaster or other tall structure needs to sway so it doesn't snap like a twig. -
I got 2 crappy rides on Nitro when I went and found it mediocre. Hopefully I'll get another chance on it. Also hoping I don't get walk of shamed on Toro - I got walk of shamed on Wicked Twister at CP, but I still fit into Millenium Force and Dragster with little issue. I did fit on Toro last year, but on the other hand, I fit on Twister last year too. Out of curiosity, how does Toro's strictness compare with Dragster/MF at CP?

Schlitterbahn Kansas - Verrückt Water Slide
GigaG replied to KBrylczyk's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
That hill looks like it could still give a pretty nice jump, although I don't think they want that. The Italian slide looked a bit safer for jumping than Verrukt. Or, it's just the American bubble-wrapping that I love to rant about. -

I understand that there was a fatal accident, but why not just train ride ops to ensure that restraints are properly locked instead of bubble-wrapping the rides in convoluted and weird ways? -
I don't know if this is right, but I read something about MF that if the train is moving, a generator runs a motor that keeps the "dogs" up. If the train "drags its dogs", it produces a loud noise that can be heard a ways away.

Cedar Point (CP) Discussion Thread

Interesting story - not saying he isn't telling the truth but I was there that day (which ironically was Maverick's opening day so several media outlets were already there). The ride was running three trains and it happened at the back of the ready brakes where a train was completely stopped - not the station. Here is a few threads on different sites with first hand reports and news clippings: http://pointbuzz.com/Forums/Thread/20997.aspx?page=1 & http://www.thepointol.com/board2/viewtopic.php?t=9017&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15&sid=db39e17261bb8d64c66c5d97ecec42e4 It was closed for a few days then ran only one train for a few weeks. Ever since the rain policy at CP changed to be much more strict. So the stopped train was waiting to enter the station? EDIT - It appears so. http://www.themeparkreview.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=42600 - this topic has aftermath pictures So they think the train slipped the post-tunnel brakes due to rain? -

Why would they do this anyways? Do any other rides load like this? Bizarro? Ride of Steel? Literally any other coaster which has experienced an ejection accident? -

Then what is the point of having them try out the test seat?! This sounds completely stupid. Seems like a bad move for a ride that just had an accident that may be attributed to the restraint's design and whether you can fit. It does make sense, though. Last year, I couldn't fit in the test seat for Wicked Twister, but I could barely fit in the ride. Unfortunately, this year, I can't fit in either, but that's a story for another day. -

Not long ago, near closing time, I went on Magnum XL-200. It wasn't raining, but there was a lightning storm freakishly nearby. Maverick ride night that night ended up being cancelled for it. The ride was running with no trims, and with lightning striking around the peninsula, my friend described the incident as "feeling like a train to death." BTW, how could operator error cause the Magnum collision? Does Magnum manually release from the final brakes? -
