All About Powered Coasters
rollermonkey replied to Three's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I've been on way more of these than I care to admit, but I will echo the common sentiment: The Mack Blauer Enzian powered coasters are pretty fun and they are a LOT faster than the Zamperla models. (Buffalo, Dragon, r=Rudolph and Tornado models seem to be the bulk of them, although the Hello Kitty coasters and the Pokemon coaster are also from Zamperla.) The Macks are even better when themed, but not enough of them are. -
They fed each other for me. I was interested in coasters already when I bought RCT1. I became addicted to the game which made me want to ride more coasters to see if I could find stuff like I was building. Not being able to find what I was building made me try harder to suceed at the games. Doing well at the games made me want to visit more parks for more ideas. Round and round. I actually think that RCDB is what REALLY made me a freak though. Between zip codes functions and parks nearby, that site became my personal travelocity!

Ride Concept I think would be Great
rollermonkey replied to pkdcoaster's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Um, how can you say that? Have you ever actually ridden this coaster? I have. It goes sideways the entire length of the track. You load facing sideways, you climb the lifts sideways, and you travel along the entire length of track sideway. While on the second lift hill, the car is rotated 180 degrees so you change orientation from facing right to facing left and the cars are returned to the original position on the pre-station brakes. The cars do not spin, but they do rock arounde the turns which minimizes a lot of the forces. It doesn't have traditional OTSR's but more like The intention is that you are simulating surfing or skateboarding. (The waves on the giant projection screens says it is a surfing theme, but the actual riding position feels more like skateboarding to me.) It may be a gimmick coaster, as it isn't the tallest, fastest, coaster with the most inversions, but it is definitely the tallest, fastest, longest SIDEWAYS coaster in the world. I understand that you desire is to see a coaster with trains that have sideways facing seating and a more traditional layout, preferably with inversions. I agree that it would probably be cool, but it would be just as gimmicky. The point I really want to make is don't make assuptions about a coaster you've never experienced for yourself based on a few pictures. To me you sounded like you were bashing the ride, and that isn't fair, and doesn't help others understand the point you were trying to make. Speed Boarder is nearly completely in the dark, and it is very difficult to get a decent picture of what it does. /Rant. -
Now there's an emotional response! Based on what I've heard so far, I am definitely going to revise my plans. I'm not big on flat rides, so I usually just do darks, towers and coasters. I may drop Drievelet unless someone feels strongly about that. (I don't.) This frees up more time to do Bobbejaanland over two half days and frees up some time for Walibi Belgium. I won't be staying at the Mercure Schiapol at all, I found out it is actually BEHIND customs. I am looking at staying north of Rotterdam the second night and as close to the airport as I can the first. I did find a hotel very close to Bobbejaanland, so I'm pretty certain of that part. Thanks! When I think I have re-finalized my plans, I'll post 'em again here so you can tear me apart again! Is it really that hard to drive less than 100 km in those countries? What is the speed limit on the expressways? Or is there that much traffic on weekdays?

X Too easy!

The sign in front says it is 107 meters tall.

I was kind of expecting Elissa or Soren to chime in at some point...

No, I don't really do candy. Do you wish upon a falling star at night if you happen to see one?

Painting Ninja? (SFMM)
rollermonkey replied to azbob19's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
We better break out the 128 crayola box for this one. I think that ^ is teal (blue with a hint of green). Between monitor setups, the camera and settings used and lighting / cloud cover that day, who knows? I'm not positive, but I wouldn't know as I only had the 8 color crayola box when I was growing up. -

Supersonic Odyssey -
Yes, those are much better! Of course, I'm at sea again, so I'll have to remember when I get home!

I can not confirm if this is just a rumor, (Dubai Dave?) but during visits to Dubai I have heard that guests arriving at the airport to stay at this hotel are flown by helicopter out to the hotel. This may just be for VIPs, but it's still cool if it's true!

Lil' Shaver. Nuff said. -
I noticed that a few of our members now have a common member title: band 4 speeling Is this meant to be a warning to those induhviduals (Those who receive the DNRC Newsletter (Dilbert) will know that's no typo!) that they have been observed not following posting guidelines and that they are being monitored closely for possible banishment? Or is it a cue to those who understand proper utilization of the English language that some translation may be required to read the post attached? It is sad that any measures must be taken, because many of our members do not in fact speak English as a first language and yet, still do a better job of communicating than some of our younger American (and UK) members. (If I am guilty of anything it is excess usage of parenthetical statements (like this one) and excess usage of elipses, which are these...)

Dubai is really coming up in the world! I wonder if they are worried about terrorists crashing into the lovely new building they are going to make? Oh, wait! Never mind!

PTR: Don and Monica's Massive Japan Update!
rollermonkey replied to Jeezus Juice's topic in Photo Trip Report Archive
Hey, Don! It's taking you longer to get these PTR's up than it did to hit all the parks! Oh, wait. Never mind. I'm still sitting on stuff from December. Press on! -
Er, hasn't the DVD been the video yearbook? Why would an online magazine (huh?) be different or better than the site as it is now with Robb's planned improvements? Just curious, as these ideas, while very good, require people to put a lot of time into them to make them worthwhile. I know Robb's pretty busy with work and all the globetrotting he does for work and for his hobby.

I was there in December. I don't think the pirate ship was open yet. There was construction inside the park and outside the front gate. I'll check my park map later today if I can find it.

It looks a little shorter, lengthwise. The sidewinder exits to the right instead of the standard left. The coil to enter the inline twists is tighter and the return run to the station is on the opposite side of the layout from its normal position. All the standard inversions are present and in the usual order. It's a modified clone, but then there are a few variants of SLC's out there already. For example: Kumali isn't really a clone at all. It has a vertical loop and a cobra roll before the inline twists. The footprint looks different, too.

Tokyo Disney Resort Discussion Thread
rollermonkey replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I've been to TDR more than a few times, as I live about 50 miles away. Based on the location map you posted, it is on the outside of the monorail ring which means it's actually a couple hundred yards outside the Disneyland gate. The monorail station itself is about 200 yards from the ticket booths. Miracosta is about 75% inside DisneySea, and less than 25% of the rooms face outside the park. There is a hotel entrance inside the park and another outside. -
There he is! Thanks for saving me a trip, Robb! Now I can go do something else, like something new for me, (that's getting hard) or a 4D construction update.

Favorite SFKK Coaster
rollermonkey replied to paramountguy's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I Thunder Run because it was the first coaster I rode that had a hairpin at the bottom of the first drop. It was running quite smoothly when I rode. (Better than it's clone bretheren when I rode them.)
