Woah, Torchlight ate like three hours of my night, haha. Dang good game, that one is. My first dungeon crawler. -
I caught Drive on Netflix last night, knowing very well what I was getting myself into. I wasn't expecting an action-packed thrill ride, just a slow, emotional piece that focused more on the actors and story than violence. I LOVED IT. I can see where people come from calling it boring, I guess, but I personally thought it was one of the most tense, emotional films I've ever seen. Ryan Gosling's character was incredible, so subtly expressive, especially during those extended silences that pop up so often. I didn't mind them one bit, since his facial expressions told a deeper story than the words he said. The violence was a bit too much for me to handle at times (The pole.. the stomp.. the fork.. the razor.. UGH), but I'm really glad I persevered through it, because Drive is now one of my favorite thrillers.

I got a 2030 on the SAT, first try!

So my friends convinced me to get over my squeamishness, and watch Drive today. It floored me (See what I did there? Hehe. Puns), to say the least. This pretty much sums up my opinion of the film. I don't understand how anyone could call it boring. It was one of the most tense and emotional films I've seen in recent memory. And I absolutely loved it.

Speaking of Steam sales... Good LORD, are a lot of indie games on sale for no reason right now! The sale ends on June 2nd, and seriously, some of these deals are too good to pass up.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hv0RIwdVrRg This is the only song on the album that I'm still not sure about. It's impressive on a technical level, indisputably, but it's just so.. weird. I understand that Devin put the stupid, vulgar humor in knowing it wasn't funny, but it's really not helping my appreciation of the song. And pretty much everything from 5:28 on... just, what? I mean, really, what in the world am I listening to?

I'd be happy to play sometime! So after a year or so of neglect, I popped Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness back into my PS2, in the mood for something different. Seriously, what did I dislike about this game enough to stop playing it? It's awesome! I mean, yeah, the visuals are horrid and all (abysmal resolution, but good art), and the voice acting can be extremely grating, but it's just so.. fun. Silly. Challenging in the best way possible. I think this is gonna be my go-to game for a little while. Also: I think I made a mistake in purchasing Medieval II: Total War on Steam during a sale a while back.. I hate RTS games, but I just couldn't resist the price. I've booted it up once. And the more I watch videos of the game, the less fun it looks. Sigh.

I really need to stop doing this to myself.. I just finished Memento. Brilliant movie, but confusing as all hell.. Oh! That's what I forgot to post yesterday! The sci-fi masterpiece Moon is available on YouTube for free, completely legally, here! If you haven't seen it, now is a perfect opportunity to have your mind blown. It's excellent.

Finally got around to seeing Donnie Darko, after having it on my DVR for the last four months. I'm afraid I can't quite give a review because what the hell did I just watch.

Welp, the reveal trailer for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 has been released. To be completely honest, as much as I dislike Call of Duty and Activision, I can't help but be intrigued. This has the potential to put an interesting new spin on the all-too-tired formula that has stagnated since CoD4 perfected it. It looks incredibly stupid and Michael Bay-esque, but fun and silly at the same time. But then again, I said nearly the same thing about Black Ops' reveal trailer. I guess we'll just have to wait until gameplay footage comes out.

Yess, the first of four albums by the Devin Townsend Project arrived at my doorstep today! Although it's the album I was looking forward to least, Ghost, I'm very pleasantly surprised by it. It's a soothing, beautiful masterpiece. Which makes me even more excited for the other three, which are all about controlled anger, fun poppy metal, and balls-to-the-wall intensity, in that order, haha.

Just started The Catcher in the Rye for my AP English 11 class. I'm only about 45 pages in so far, and I think I like it. I'm not sure, not much has happened yet. I do like the way it's written, though, how it's like Holden's jacked-up train of thought. As for the other books we've read this year and my opinion on them.. The Crucible: Ugh.. Did NOT enjoy this one at all, despite being highly interested in theatre and Cold War-esque paranoia. The Great Gatsby: Meh. I guess I liked it, but I felt extremely underwhelmed by the time I finished it. That tends to happen when I read a book that people call one of the greatest ever. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn: Finally, a book I truly enjoyed! Though the end made me angry. Tom Sawyer is an idiot. Their Eyes Were Watching God: Another one I loved. A bit tough to read, and all about relationships the whole way through, but it was just so.. good. I can't even explain why.

This song is rather explicit toward the end, but it's too powerful not to share. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8X1nc9l1Oc For the first part of the song, it's Devin showing his newfound control and calmness after quitting drugs and alcohol, singing about his sobriety. But around the 3:00 mark, something starts to change... Without spoiling the surprise, let's say a voice from his past comes back to haunt him. A voice that has one goal: to lure him back into his destructive habits. And when that voice takes the stage... well, you are not prepared. Let's leave it at that. I haven't been able to stop listening to this song for the last week, and I can't wait for the album to arrive from Amazon any day now!

Welp, it's over. And you know what? I'm okay with it. Our relationship wasn't anywhere near healthy, looking back. I expected too much of her in a high-stress situation, and the incredibly low frequency of seeing one another was miserable. And really, we both only gained from this relationship. I helped her through some really tough times, and she helped me mature as a person and learn how to treat a girl right. We may have promised it would last forever, but oh well, it's a mutual promise-break. No need for any regrets. As for what happens after this, I'll leave it to 9:00 News. (warning: high volume!)

Ooookay, I'm struggling to think of a way that this situation could be more complicated. I'll just say that Ashley, my long-distance ex, broke up with her new boyfriend this week. In the hour-long phone call we just had to ease her scrambled feelings, we essentially rekindled our feelings for each other, but agreed that we can't do anything about it just yet, as some more things have yet to be figured out. And there are some things that would make getting back together really uncomfortable, to say the least. (update 4/21:) And now my parents revealed that they didn't like her, nor did pretty much anyone, which baffles me. It's all totally up in the air right now, and I have absolutely no idea how it's going to play out.. I guess we'll see in the next week.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tG6oYT56kfg It's been in my head all day. Not that I'm complaining, it's an incredible song, split into two parts that MUST NOT be separated.

I've gotten a lot more into coffee over the last few months. For about a year, I've been a mocha drinker. Less for the coffee taste, and more for the hot chocolate-like flavor, to be honest. But recently, I decided to make my own coffee at home as opposed to getting it at It's A Grind or Starbucks, and have slowly gotten out of that habit. Right now I'm trying to adjust to coffee with just milk. I currently drink it with french vanilla Coffee Mate, which I don't care if it's unmanly, it's damn good.

Last night, the breakup with my long-distance girlfriend was made 100% official. See, ever since we broke it off two months ago, we've both kept the idea in the back of our minds that it's only temporary, that in a few years, when we grow up and understand our own lives better, we can get back together and be happier than ever. But we've recognized how unhealthy that is, especially when she has a new boyfriend that isn't exactly pleased to find out how close she is to her ex that still has yet to get over her. So she told me last night that we should stop talking for a while, just to ease his nerves and give me a chance to fully move on and learn to live without her playing a huge part in my life. I totally understand the motive behind this, and agree that it's absolutely for the best of all three of the people it affects.. but that doesn't change it from being one of the hardest things I've ever been through. Ashley was the first girl I've loved, and while there's a high possibility it may have just been that young, stupid, "NUBUDY HAZ LUVD LYK USSS!!! <9" thing, it doesn't change the fact that she was so important to me. But there's nothing I can do now, except move on. Here goes nothing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpfPpxjEhb8 I was just recommended this band by a stranger over the internet.. but I seriously like what I hear. I'm gonna have to look into this a bit more.

You guys should all download and play The Stanley Parable. It's a Half-Life 2 mod, but to my understanding, you don't even need a Source engine game to play it; it installs a proper version of the engine with the mod itself. So for those unlucky few that have never played a Valve game (L4D, HL2, TF2, Portal, etc), you're not left out. It's not quite a game, but more of a short exploration of choice and freedom in interactive storytelling. It's only five to ten minutes long, which is a good thing, since you will want to experiment with choice. And it will blow your mind. And it's free and legal and safe. That's always a plus.

Best game soundtrack of all time? I think so.

I played it religiously for about a week, and have just completely burnt out on it. The same thing is happening with Words/Scramble With Friends, I have like twenty notifications, but just can't be bothered to play.. Weird. Maybe it's because I'm playing Tiny Tower too much.. Naaah. But seriously, Tiny Tower. If management games pique your interest, you can't go wrong with this one. It's slow to start, for sure, and it does get redundant, but there's no better game to play in tiny increments. And also, Beat Hazard is incredible. It's $3, I believe, but it's been on sale for $1, and even free (when I caught it ). It's the full game that was on PC/Mac/360/PS3, a dual-stick shooter that follows your music, with the intensity of your song gauging the difficulty of the level and the craziness of the visuals. Very much worth the entry price if you're into that.
