TPR's New Forum UPGRADE!
ginzo replied to Hhappy's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
My comment is I really like the upgraded forum. It really is an upgrade as many of the quirks of the old forum have been fixed. Great work guys! -
The University of Busch?

It is common sense that you should clean up your writing when defending your alma mater. -

^It's nice to see that USF teaches writing skills. -
^Yeah, that's a pretty weak argument that the Ruskies have. That Plushenko should win because he did one jump. Sure he should get more points for pulling off the most difficult jump in figure skating, but then there's the other 4+ minutes of routine to score. Lysacek just looked damn good and Plushenko looked less good. Deal with it.

^Yeah, she sucks. If you took out all the crap, the Olympics would be like 1 hour each night. But somehow NBC has ballooned it out to 4.

Actually, there is hilarious irony in this because one of the South Korean skaters said to the press that Apolo Ohno didn't deserve the first silver medal he won because he was bumping. I'm kind of Olympic'd out. If I see one more "World's Greatest Spokesperson In The World" commercial, I might lose it.

The University of Busch?

^^Undergraduate rankings have little to do with grad school. Grad school programs vary from school to school, department to department, and graduate adviser to graduate adviser. A friend of a friend had to quit a postdoc at Harvard because the Nobel-prize-winning professor he was working for was highly abusive. For grad school, you should research what schools have strong programs in your field of study. Also, it's good to meet the department and see if you get along with them because you're going to be their bitch for 5+ years. That's actually the most important thing: Can you see yourself being a slave for these people? Anyway, BGT being across the street is a poor reason to choose a grad school because the vast majority of your time will not be spent at BGT. BGT has nice coasters and all, but you'd get sick of them pretty fast. And, if you're in a demanding field of study, you'll barely have any time to go there anyway. The inside of a research lab or college library looks the same in Oregon, Florida, or Ohio. -
SeaWorld Orlando (SWO) Discussion Thread

Maybe SeaWorld should start serving orca steak. They could hire that disgusting Andrew Zimmern guy to help promote it. Mmmmmm... Shamu! -
Kentucky Kingdom (SFKK, KK) Discussion Thread

^I'm with you on that. It seems like the State Fair Board wants the operator to assume ALL the risk while they just collect the money, keep ALL the capital investments the operator makes, etc. I'm also skeptical about the 4 companies interested in running the park. Regardless of who is right or wrong on the lease terms, do they really expect me to believe that quality operators are lining up to run the place as they're suing Six Flags? I think part of the reason that none of the operators have been named is that one of them is Danny Rogers. -
Thanks for posting this. Thailand has been on my travel to-do list for a long time. I've never met anyone who didn't like it there.

Travelling to Germany
ginzo replied to Solid Gold's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
If you're using trains, you can get to Klotten from by way of Koblenz. Just take the train to Cochem (not Klotten), walk through town, and take the chairlift up to the park. -

^US traffic depends on where you're driving. Places like LA and Chicago have more aggressive drivers. In my experience, Italians are the worst drivers. They'll run you down with their Vespas for having the nerve to walk on the sidewalk. -

^Did they change the autobahn advisory speed recently? I just checked like 20 different websites and they're all still saying it's 130 km/hr. But I wasn't checking official government websites. 120 seems like a pretty darn low cut off for the autobahn. A few states in the US even have higher speed limits than that. -
Travelling to Germany

Although I like trains, this trip is probably best done by car. Some notes on driving in Germany: -Get an International Driving Permit (IDP) from AAA. You can get fined for driving without an IDP in Germany. -If you rent a car, pay extra for the collision damage waiver (CDW) insurance. This will give you full coverage in case something bad happens. -If you can't drive a manual, learn how before you go. Automatic transmission cars cost approximately 2x as much to rent in Germany. -The left lane in the autobahn is for passing only. Don't be a stupid American and block the passing lane. -Although there is technically no speed limit on the autobahn, there is a suggested speed limit. I think it's 130 km/hr. If you drive over the suggested speed limit, your insurance policy will not cover you if you wreck. -
I think that goes for all athletes and entertainers in general. But we're some gossipy mofos. So, knowing way too much about entertainers' personal lives will continue to be big business.

^At least he hasn't spit on the ice like the speed skaters or had a total emotional meltdown like Lindsey Vonn. What we need is a DVR smart enough to show you only the actual competitions. No interviews, medal ceremonies, polar bears, etc.

I think they're also smarting from having lost pair figure skating for the first time in like 50 years to the Chinese. But it wasn't really a close match with the Chinese. So, the Russians couldn't bitch about that. Also, pairs can't do quads as women can't do them right now, which means if a man did a quad the pair would only get credit for a triple.

Computer illiterate people that think they know things
ginzo replied to Oreos's topic in Random, Random, Random
I used to work in a Network Operations Center where we'd field calls about broken computer networks from customers. One tech from a major bank called in and told me they had an alarm on one of their ATM sites. I asked him what the alarm said. He told me, "It says, 'Machine is out of cash.'" I'm sure I have like 500 stories like that, but that's one that comes to mind. -
