Why do I have to be Mr. Pink?
-
^I hope PIXAR wins a Best Picture eventually. I thought they had a stronger shot last year with WALL-E. It'll probably never happen though. Actors make up the majority of the academy voters. Being egomaniacs, they aren't likely to concede that they're getting their asses kicked by a bunch of computer animation nerds in NorCal.

I wouldn't have cared if Avatar had won. I like it more than several films that won Best Picture. Granted it'll probably look really silly 30 years from now.

^Yeah, it gets my vote for nicest view from a coaster. But then again, you only get to see the water and cityscape momentarily before the ride flips the hell out of you. Great stuff! -

Considering their recent insistence that this is a "WOODEN" coaster, you might be on to something. Hahahahahahahaha! -
^^I admire Apple's skill at creating devoted fanboys. For example, how they convinced many people to pay a premium for a nicer-looking box that you shove under your desk and never look at.
-
Yeah, Apple has a completely clean record in this department. They've never "stolen" any ideas. The GUI for example, Jobs came up with that on his own. Xerox PARC did not influence him in the least. Companies walk a fine line between stealing and competing/improving on things. Let the lawyers figure out where the difference lies.

Looks like a fun weekend. I still need to make it out to Vegas. I'm not a gambler, but it looks like a great place to visit.

The main difference between celebrities and everyone else is that celebrities get press coverage of their opinions. -
I do not understand the argument. It reads like, "Because we don't know when the dividend will come back, you should also sell at a loss." I've become more skeptical about this deal. Cedar Fair serviced and reduced their debt during the worst of the recession with reduced attendance and spending. Sure, they couldn't pay a dividend at the same time, but they are keeping their head above water. They'll probably be strong again when the economy recovers. If they can't pay a dividend for a few years while they deal with their debt, then so be it. Why lose the dividend and a huge amount of stock value? Why sell at the worst possible time?

The University of Busch?
ginzo replied to BrownStreak's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
^Yep, and you have to be an A student to get into a place like that. Grading on a nasty curve would not be fair to those students who are going to apply to grad/professional schools where their GPA can make or break their applications. These are students that would bust the curve anywhere else. -
^Didn't Japan just have a non-destructive quake? OMG! Three disasters!!! Nostradamus was right! Everyone should read Phil Plait's Death from the Skies! The human race will end because of a natural disaster. It's just a matter of when and how. Though, the odds are strong that none of us will live to see The End of the World.

Kentucky Kingdom (SFKK, KK) Discussion Thread
ginzo replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Eminent domain is typically limited to public works projects and blight. I don't think SFKK is going to fall under either of those circumstances. That is unless KY plans to build a road right through the park. And, even if KY were able to use eminent domain, wouldn't that just entitle them to the land, not necessarily everything on the land? And the state would still have to pay fair market value for everything. Joe "The strange things you learn being raised by a real estate attorney" C. -

I agree 100%. The show isn't very good. The guest relations girl at Särkänniemi was surprised when I told her their show was better than SeaWorld's, but I really think it is. -
Travelling to Germany
ginzo replied to Solid Gold's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
^You might be able to squeeze in two of the smaller German parks in a day if they're close enough. You'll need to carefully check the train schedules and the park operating schedules. Remember that you need to allow time to get from the train station to the park. At Holiday Park, for example, you'll need to take a bus from the train station to the park. Stuff like that eats up some time. I would give a full day to the larger German parks: Phantasialand, Heide Park, and Europa Park. And you could easily spend 2 days at Europa. -
Gröna Lund Discussion Thread

I love the rivalry between Liseberg and Gröna Lund. It can only benefit roller coaster dorks when two of the best parks in the world try to outdo each other. -

^A similar thing is happening here in Ohio. Ohio State is really tightening up on admissions because they want to compete more with Michigan on academics. Of course, they'll never "catch up" with Michigan, but they are trying. One of the Florida schools, I think it was UCF, opened a medical school recently. They've got an brilliant strategy to attract the top students: It's free. I dunno how long it'll stay free, but that's a great way to bring in the best for your first few classes.
