Letter from Cedar Fair
ginzo replied to Milkchan's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I don't even think it is possible for me to write shorthand for text messages, emails, posts on a forum or just plain writing. You see, I had an advanced English Grammar class for my three years in Middle School with the same teacher. Her methods of eradicating poor grammar included essays on the reasons shorthand was improper, writing the proper form of the word 200 times for each replacement shorthand word found on an assignment and more techniques like this. After those three years (which at the time I hated) I learned how to make proper business letters in the different formats, including ones addressed directly to a major company. Now, looking back at it, I feel lucky as I never have to worry about shorthand, as proper grammar has truly been hammered into my brain forever. The scary thing about it is, that if someone speaks or types with horrible grammar (not one or two errors, but over 10 in one sentence), my friends and I (from that class) all cringe as it hurts to hear and see... Grammar nazi teachers, unfortunately, don't typically teach you how to be a good writer. You'll need to consult "The Elements of Style" for that, or get lucky with a good English professor. -

I think it's just $1 for a ride. If you ride in the back, it's hard to keep your hands up the whole way. The turn after the first drop is surprisingly forceful in the back seat. -

What kind of response did your letters get from Michael Jackson when you were 16? -

This reminds me a of a recent incident at my work. A cohort of mine fired off an illiterate email to our CEO. My coworker thought he was being clever, but all he achieved was make our workgroup look like a bunch of uneducated thugs. The guy was so lost I had to warn him not to send the email in all caps, to the CEO of a $2-billion company. This isn't even a question! Of course they're going to expand their parks. Did he expect to get a reply detailing Cedar Fair's new "let the parks sit and rot" strategy? -
Have you ever had someone ask you...
ginzo replied to MisterP's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I don't think I've ever had anyone ask to cut in front of me, but it would depend on the situation. Rude hillbillies would not get to cut just because they are pushy. Honestly, I've had tons of people let me cut them so that they can ride on the same train as their group. That happens to me so much that I would have no problem with letting others cut me from time to time. One time I gave up the back seat of Thunderhead to an older man and his son just because they looked really excited to ride it. It was a slow day, and I had already ridden it several times. They enthusiastically asked me about the ride, and I wound up just giving them the back seat. -
What To Do While In Kentucky
ginzo replied to EuroTre's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Yeah, don't miss Beech Bend! The park isn't that great, but Kentucky Rumbler is the best coaster in the state. SFKK is really a half day park at best. You should also check into going to Mammoth Cave. They have all kinds of tours, everything from basic walk throughs to the "wild cave tour". Wild Cave is not for wimps, but it's an incredible experience. Mammoth is between Louisville and Bowling Green, about 30 miles north of Bowling Green, which is where Beech Bend is. http://www.nps.gov/maca/ Edit: You should also considering going to Indiana Beach instead of SFKK. Indiana Beach is a lot more fun than SFKK. -
He's already gone.
-
I can't say that I'm sad that he is gone. Anyone that opens an art museum, The Saddam Art Center, and fills it with nothing but paintings and sculptures of himself is seriously messed in the head. That, of course, is the least of his crimes. There are sadly still many dictators in the world, including some that the US won't even recognize as such.

Transformers: The Movie Trailer Released!
ginzo replied to robbalvey's topic in Random, Random, Random
I only made it through 15 seconds of the trailer, but that was enough for me. Cartoon conversions to movies with live actors nearly always suck. They should have done this as a 100% CG movie. I had nearly all the Transformers toys back in the 80s, and would love to see a movie that held true to the original conception. This just looks like bad sci-fi that happens to have the name Transformers on it. Frank Miller's 300 is going to blow this POS out of the water. http://www.apple.com/trailers/wb/300/ -

You didn't just win. You destroyed us! I think you won by like 50 points. That game is nice, but pricey. $1 per player seems steep. We should rematch on bowling whenever one of us can get a Wii. -

If you believe in such things, only God could melt down a BTR and then have enough to build a Hyper! Oh wait, some here do think B+M are god. Of course B&M could make a hyper using the steel from a Batman clone, the world's shortest hypercoaster. Think about it. Lift Hill > Bunny Hop > Brake run. Damn. How's that for marketable? -

Nice! That totally pwns Expedition GeForce and Black Mamba. -
We met briefly with James, a local TPR member, and rode Ohio's finest steel coaster, the Boa Squeeze. I predict PKI will be out of business in 3 years due to this monster of a coaster. We played a few of the games, including an excellent video bowling game. My turn! Put your hands where I can see them! Say hi! I'm tired of these !@#!@# snakes in this !@#$!@#!@ coaster. If you win at this game, Carlos Santana will hire you. Really. Obligatory back-of-heads shot. Yeah! Cedar Fair look out! It's not a real theme park without this.

I best remember Gerald Ford in Chevy Chase's SNL impersonatations of him, where he would inevitably knock the podium over. Classic stuff. Then there was Beverly Hills Cop 2, where Axel cons his way into a nightclub by saying that Taggart is Gerald Ford. When Taggart asks Axel if he really looks like Gerald Ford, Axel says, "Y'all both look like Gerald Ford." Haha. That's pretty much the extent of what I remember about President Ford. After all, I was born during the Carter administration, and don't remember a thing about that.

Yeah, I agree on that. It's the double whammy of bad food that's expensive that makes me avoid it. Expensive but good food is fine, as is cheap but mediocre food. Holiday World is a great example of mediocre, but cheap food. I'll always eat at HW, because they aren't trying to gouge you. You can usually eat there for ~$5-$6 per person, which is totally reasonable. -
So the Coney Island Cyclone, Villain, Voyage, Hades, etc are marketing deceptions because the structure is steel? No. It's the track material that determines whether the ride is wood or steel, not the supports. SOB's loop was 100% steel. Ugh. SOB was such a moronic idea. I really hope someone got fired over wasting all that capital. PKI is my home park. We could have got a B&M or Intamin hypercoaster for that amount of capital, and we got a gimmicky bottom 5 woodie instead.

I hate that too. My policy is if I'm doing more than 10 over, they can go around me if they really want to. I also hate people "only" doing the limit in the left-lane of a multi-lane highway when there is no reasonable excuse like weather or traffic.. I always move over and let those people pass. Even with the possible irritation of them slowing down, I'd rather have them get the speeding ticket than me.
-
Road-Related Pet Peeves: 1) Those guys that come up on your a$$ in the fast lane when you're doing say 80. You move out of the way, and then they slow down to 75. I get that ALL the time. 2) Old men in large cars that refuse to vacate the fast lane on 2-lane highways when there is no room to pass on the right. I get that one all the time on I-71 between Cincy and Columbus. 3) Those idiots that insist on doing 90 when the roads have snow/ice on them. I laugh at you when I see you on the side of the road a few miles down. That haste was so worth it, right? 4) Semi drivers that think it's funny to trap you on all sides, leaving you stuck between 3 semis for 10 miles. 5) That guy that doesn't notice the light change to green because he's on his phone, but finally goes through the intersection with just enough time for him to make it through, leaving you stuck at the red light again. Thanks!

Park food is usually a waste. We do indulge in Graeter's whenever we go to PKI. I typically eat before I go into a park, and then just buy snacks inside the park. Then we'll go to a sit down place after we leave. I rarely eat full meals in parks. For two people you can drop an easy $20 on mediocre food. I also seldom buy souvenirs, except for post cards or, rarely, a tshirt. -

Is SoCal even much of a Spring Break destination? I've thought that all the college meatheads went to Florida or Cancun for Spring Break, but that might just be because I'm from the midwest. I can never think of Spring Break without thinking of Bruno's skit on the beach with the wrestling team. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gyGQoPWY0ng Be sure to watch the end, because that's the best part. He totally nails them. -

Huh? That sounds exagerrated to me. Sure they lost some revenue by not having it open when they wanted, but it's hardly worthless. Like they're going to recoup $21 million in CAPEX in a few weeks. -
SoB was never good, even the first day it opened to the public. Sorry to say but I don't remember it claiming any awards. Look at where it is on Mitch's poll and you'll understand what kind of ride it is. -James Dillaman I don't understand all this fuss either. Calling SOB a looping woodie was a marketing deception, as the loop was steel. Sure the loop was fun, but the design failed. Anyone with the slightest understanding of Physics can appreciate the situation. 1) Wood is a weaker material that can't withstand anywhere near the force that steel can. 2) Too much weight (force) causes the wood to crack and break, endangering riders. 3) So the solution is to reduce the force on the wood by using lighter trains. 4) Using lighter trains means that there is not enough momentum to make it through a 118 foot vertical loop. So, you take the loop out.
