Carowinds Discussion Thread

For BBQ, I'm contractually obligated to tell you to go to this place. Brit's entire family lives locally and swears by it, but on the flipside because they refuse to accept that any other BBQ can compete with this place I can't objectively compare it to anything else around because they refuse to go anywhere else. Also, they don't serve beer, so if you want good BBQ and drinks and not just a tiny, backwoods place with great BBQ and nothing else then ignore me. -
Truth be told, I thought Devil's Den was just okay and I thought the gum wall was gross but I did recently come across the posts from the guy who was taking care of it and I appreciate the amount of work he put into it with zero budget. I see no reason why any other park would buy that thing, though.

This is a licensing deal, right? I feel like this park will be "Six Flags" in name only and nobody should expect anything to be a certain way based on any of the other parks in the chain. There will probably be some policies that need to be upheld, but yeah... I don't know about that one. That said, part of point of this project and similar projects is to make the country more appealing to foreign tourism dollars so who knows. I'm sure they'll be walking a tightrope for awhile between their current world-views and their desire for foreign money and a more diversified and future-proof economy.

I love it! -
Another season in the books... we swung by for closing weekend, once on Friday and again last night for the last few hours since we were in the area both days. Both times the park was pretty crowded though last night around 6:00 it rained for about an hour and that front dropped the temperature by almost 20 degrees so the last few hours of the night we had the place to ourselves, though it was frigid. The temperature itself was fine (mid-to-high 30's probably) but the wind really picked up to the point where they started front-loading Nitro and holding Jersey Devil in the station until the trains were full before sending them (they did get a second train back on, by the way). We spent the last 30 minutes of the night riding Nitro and I'm shocked that I can feel my hands at all. Worth it though... PS: I was bored today so I checked Instagram to look this up... apparently despite this being my home park in the year that they opened a brand new RMC, prior to Holiday in the Park I had only been there 3 times this year. We logged 5 visits during Holiday in the Park. That should give you an idea of what I think of this event (and what I think of summertime and Fright Fest crowds at this place too ). This season was mostly an absolute clusterfuck. Jersey Devil broke constantly during the summer (once for almost a straight month) and they managed to derail both their best coaster and somehow a log flume but Holiday in the Park was as awesome as ever! See you next year, Great Adventure. Now go fix El Toro.

Queue Times shows that wait times drop off almost every day as the day goes on (It's pulling data right from the Disney app). The shortest line will be at park close, but this isn't Flight of Passage where there's virtually zero chance of the ride going down. People can and have been screwed attempting this. If you only have one day and it's a must for you then I probably would rope drop it but with all of the hotel guests beating you there you're going to wait awhile and if you're not near the front of the line for day guests I wouldn't even bother until later. Also, check the app and refresh a lot early in the day. The odds of you getting a chance to buy a LL for it are extremely low, but it's the Disney app and stranger things have happened.

It can happen depending on the area and state of local politics, but I stand by the fact that if Jew says it's happening it's probably happening since I'm not an expert on this area specifically. If this were California's Great America, locals could make their lives miserable and delay this like crazy.

Knoebels Discussion Thread

It's nice, but very overpriced and the rides probably won't all be open. For example... it's Christmas week and their two best coasters are closed simply because they suck like that. This park has a shocking inability to keep rides that (aside from Sandy) are very basic and should be reliable open even though they're pretty new and in a mall, not exposed to the elements ever. It's actually amazing how f*cked up this place is. If you land and click on the park alerts page and everything you care about is somehow open or if it's raining, then I guess go. Otherwise, go to Dorney because they're a normal park and the rides will actually be open and it won't cost $70. As for why you flew into NYC, it makes total sense... LHR to NYC flights are often the chepaest, and you're going to Coney Island anyway. I 100% get it. -
I feel like Disney sometimes builds perfectly good rides that people don't like because their guests (though no fault of their own) overhype the sh*t out of them and the wait times are so insane that nobody will get off of those rides feeling good about what they had to go through to ride them. I feel that way about Slinky, Navi River Journey and Mine Train for sure. They'd all be nice rides if the line were ever 20 minutes for them. I even had to catch myself with Slinky falling into the trap of feeling like I needed to wake up at 6:55 AM to make sure I secured my spot on the worst non-kiddy coaster on WDW property that's popular simply because everyone decided that it should be. Note; I was tempted to include Peter Pan on the list but I didn't because I actually just think that ride sucks.

You're dedicating an entire day to drive from JFK to Knoebels? Well, you have options. 1) You're driving through New York City. Have you ever been? If not, go there. Let me know what type of stuff you're into and I can come up with suggestions, but it's an amazing city with virtually limitless options on things to do. This is the option that I'd recommend. 2) Take 78 instead of 80 and go to Dorney on the way . You don't need more than 3-4 hours there. 3) Go to the American Dream Mall on the way but I actually hate this option and am just putting it here because I feel like I guess I should acknowledge that it's a thing. PS: JFK is close to Coney Island, just throwing that out into the world. if you take the Verazanno you'll be literally 3 blocks from the Coney Island Cyclone so if that's not part of your itinerary, it's an option. I mean it's literally right there... If you'd rather drive to Knoebels first then there's nothing to do whatsoever unless you just want to go to Knoebels the night before too, buy tickets and do a few rides which is a fine plan. -
They are putting an almost 200-foot-tall coaster element 4 blocks away from the current edge of the actual theme park and really close to private homes. Knott's owns the property, you can make that argument and you're not wrong but I feel like they'd have a more legitimate complaint than the people who complained about say... Falcon's Fury. Jew is the expert on this though. If he says it's getting approved even if they bitch then it's probably getting approved even if they bitch.

There is no skip the line pass but you'll be fine. Go to Flying Turns or Impulse first and ride the other one immediately after. There is no gate so just try to be at the hand stamp place a little bit before opening. It's near Flying Turns so maybe hit that first, but you're fine with that or Impulse. I would never dream of leaving Knoebels early to go to Hersheypark, but you do you. "Could" you do it? Sure... we "could" all do a lot of questionable things throughout the course of our lives. -
The one legitimate potential issue in all of that is the neighbors. I mean... you are looking at a giant element, probably hundreds of feet in the air immediately across the street from these houses. The only other rides in the park this close to residential homes are Pony Express where the turnaround is in a noise-reducing tunnel and the rapids ride which isn't loud. I know the argument is "You bought a house next to a theme park, f*ck you but the people on the end of Santa Domingo way / Santa Valera Street are currently a solid 3-4 blocks from any ride that would make any meaningful amount of noise. Now they're going to be so close to a turnaround that loose articles will probably occasionally end up in their yard without some type of shield, though I would expect something like this on that turnaround. I feel like it's inevitable that they'll fight this. They may not win, but I wouldn't be shocked if this gets hung up for awhile.

I think you're misreading it, though it is a weird message. The operative word is probably "or" and reaching the maximum number of reservations is just listed as one of the two reasons that the message could be appearing. It's probably not actually the reason and not actually a thing. The first reason listed "There are not any available dates at this time" is probably the reason. Boldy is right though, all we can do is guess. The best option is to call them to be sure. As for complaints about the reservation system existing at all when you have a season pass that promises unlimited visits, that's a separate issue and I'm not commenting on that.
