PTR: My Macbook Arrives

So for all the work I do with computers, I've never owned a laptop. That all changed when Apple announced the new Macbook Pro's at Macworld in January. I had been waiting for the Powerbook line to transition over to the new Intel chips before buying, so I finally placed my order the day after they were announced.

 

After much impatient waiting over the past month and a half, it finally came-and just in time for my big trip to Florida.

I've been thinking about buying one of those. But common sense is keeping me from adding an extra $2K onto my credit card.

Nice... *drools* At first, I thought you were being sarcastic on the other topic about the Mac...I've never heard of the MacBook before, just the PowerMac and the iBook. That computer looks sweet though.

BTW, Wes. My dad's G4 Powerbook is the same size and look. So don't even start on my little cough above.

^ Uh, yeah...I KNOW it's a souped up Powerbook. That's what I wanted. It has a faster processor (two actually), a brighter screen, the built in camera, etc. I was always going to get a Powerbook, but I was waiting until Apple put the Intel chips in them. They just happened to change the name when they did.

 

Wes (I still like the Powerbook name more than Macbook though.)

Awesome news, Wes! Glad you got your baby safely. Just remember, she (?) may be safe at Disney and Universal, but don't take her to the Wisconsin State Fair. The Arrow Pipeline coaster won't be too forgiving on sleekness like that!

Serious flaw on OS X

We received notice from Juergen Schmidt, editor-in-chief at heise.de,

that a serious vulnerability has been found in Apple Safari on OS X.

"In its default configuration shell commands are execute[d] simply by

visting a web site - no user interaction required." This could be

really bad. Attackers can run shell scripts on your computer remotely

just by visiting a malicious website.

The problem is due to a feature that is activated by default: Open

Safe Files after downloading. A zip file is considered safe and so

they will be opened automatically. Subsequently, a shell script with

no #! at the beginning of the script will be executed automatically.

No user interaction!

 

Recommended action: disable the option "Open 'safe' files after

downloading" in the "General" preferences section in Safari.
