Creating GOOD beats takes a considerable amount of talent, just like writing a GOOD chord progression or hook does. There are just as many terrible metal bands that play the same power chords or pop bands that do some variation on C G D A as there are terrible rappers who use Frooty Loops to make bad beats.

^^^ i have to completely dissagree ^^^

they put on the best show ive ever see even tho they are not my favorite band

they put freaking beer bottles on the mic stands w/ straws so they can drink and play

Ability to drink and play does not make you a good band, hence why you don't see many alcoholic street musicians topping the charts....

Herman Li is ridiculous in concert from a video I've seen, but the others suck something awful. I don't really like Dragonforce anyway; I've played the song on Guitar Hero far too much to like them.

There's good and bad music everywhere. While at the moment, most mainstream stuff is terrible, dont always think that indie is any better. There is a ton of indie bands that should just give it up.

And Panic at the Disco and Fall Out Boy are terrible, I often think that FOB's problem is the diva bassist who truly sucks at playing the bass and writing music. Their guitarist isnt half bad. But I have nothing good to say about Panic

^ I have to oppose you on that. In my opinion, I have to give a lot more credit to Panic! than to FOB. I saw FOB live last semester and it was truly a train wreck, it was pretty much Pete Wentz with a lot of Pyro. Their set was amazing and so was their crew, but their live music was TERRIBLE.

I like Motion City Soundtrack, and they're going on tour with Panic!, so I'm going to that show in late April because I love to go to a lot of concerts. At this point I really can't judge Panic! on their live performances, but I think their songs are a lot better than anything FOB has come out with. If you remove "I Write Sins Not Tragedies" from Panic's track record, I think they're a fairy solid band. I've certainly heard MUCH better/worse from bands that are both "mainstream" and "indie", but I would rank FOB a lot lower than Panic! in terms of musical merit.

If Panic! proves to be as awful as FOB was live I will surely let you guys know, but it will be really hard to be worse than FOB. If you had put FOB on a small stage in a small venue they would have gotten booed off. They're lucky they have fire cannons and awesome technicians or else their performance would have been worth next to nothing. (However, Gym Class Heroes pulled off one of the best live shows I've ever seen. They opened for FOB and they even managed to rock a cover of The Arctic Monkeys, of whom I am a HUGE fan)

Another thing that really annoys me about Panic: the long, stupid, pointless and tryhard-philosophical titles for their songs.

I know :looks up an album on music site: let's see, we have "the only difference between martyrdom and suicide is press coverage", "lying is the most fun a girl can have without taking her clothes off", "London beckoned songs about money written by machines" (I don't get it either), and my personal favorite, "There's A Good Reason These Tables are Numbered Honey, You Just Haven't Thought Of It Yet". all these songs names make you wanna stab Ben Affleck.

What about FOB

Our Lawyer Made Us Change The Name Of This Song So We Wouldn't Get Sued

I've Got A Dark Alley And A Bad Idea That Says You Should Shut Your Mouth (Summer Song)

I Slept With Someone In Fall Out Boy And All I Got Was This Stupid Song Written About Me

Get Busy Living Or Get Busy Dying (Do Your Part To Save The Scene And Stop Going To Shows).

It was a trend with the "Hip Bands" of the month.

Granted there are some bad rappers and songs out there,

Every Li'l' Wayne song. I never knew someone could think of things so horrible towards women.

Li'l Wayne is awesome. Dude is a freestyle master.

Having little or no idea who Li'l wayne is, I did a lyric search. (some of my students are Li'l wayne fans as well...)

Not trying to be prudish, but what?

From the song titled HOE'S

"I got this rat named Shelly that love Makavelli

Number five combo meals and splashin' K-Y Jelly

How a old school shorty still drink a forty

Grab the mic, start a fight, and...."

I took this one snippet from his over 200 songs listed on metrolyrics.com,

I took the time to look over some 25 of his "songs", and every single one of them was about some sort of iillicit behavior. How are his lyrics masterful? Is it because they address a real problem in our society? If he were truly masterful, he might offer up a solution too.

Like so many rappers, not all, but many of them, a vast majority of what I saw where songs about getting rich, stealing money, doing his bit$^3s and killing to get ahead in life.

I for one am not a Li'l wayne fan.

I said he was a freestyle master, ie: coming up with lyrics and rhymes on the spot. But if you want me to cite good lyrics by him..

Then they tellin y'all lies on the news

The white people smiling like everythin cool

But I know people that died in that pool

I know people that died in them schools

Now what is the survivor to do?

Got to no trailer, you gotta move

Now it's on to Texas and to (Geeoorrggiiaa)

They tell you what they want, show you what they want you to see

But they don't let you know what's really goin on

Make it look like a lotta stealin goin on

Boy them cops is killas in my home

Nigga shot dead in the middle of the street

I ain't no thief, I'm just tryin to eat

Man fuck the police and president (Geeoorrrggiiaa) Bush

So what happened to the leverage, why wasn't they steady

Why wasn't they able to control this?

I know some fok' that live by the lever

that keep on tellin me they heard this, stole this

Same shit happened back in Hurricane Betsy

1965, I ain't too young to know this

That was President Johnson now

but it's president (Geeoorrggiiaa) Bush

And so many pop and rock musicians, not all, but many of them, a vast majority of what I saw where songs about losing their girlfriend, having a broken heart, being in love, not being in love, and being sad about being and not being in love. I don't know what's worse, a generic rap about 22 inch rims and iced grills, or a generic rock song about a bad break up. Either is equally uncreative, uninspiring, and forgettable.

Furthermore, to say that a musician has to cite a solution to issues raised in their songs in order to be masterful is asinine.

Here's the thing: I DO think a fairly large portion of hip hop isn't good at all, especially with the boring genre clichés you cited. But the same thing can be applied to rock. I would say 90% of the artists in any genre are going to be bad, and it's the 10% that make it worth listening to.

So I went to youtube to see for myself.

Still not impressed. Sorry, I just don't care for him.

I am not pontificating the virtues of pop music, just my mis-givings about Li'l Wayne.
