Or, at least put a "Beta" tag on it like they did for Siri back in 2011.

Yeah. Best thing they could have done was kept Google Maps as a downloadable option, labeled Appled Maps as a beta/test scenario, and invited people to give feedback.

I'm sure Apple can part with some of its multibillion dollar war chest to hire more people to work on it, and buy up relevant companies and services that will make this better.

Even if it doesn't get approved, you can still make the Google Maps webpage into a webapp for your home screen. The Google-developed YouTube app got approved. They've approved a bunch of map apps already, and if they were that concerned about third parties developing map apps to compete with their own, every single app listed in the "navigation" category of the app store would have been removed when iOS 6 was released.

Gonna hold off on upgrading to iOS 6 for now. While it's going to take time to approach Google's level of detail, I bet they can fix some of the rendering bugs pretty quickly. I'll upgrade after a patch or two.

If I remember correctly, OS X Lion was a total buggy turd when it first came out as well, but was quickly patched.

Are you talking about the new app? The YouTube App has certainly benefited from escaping Apples death grip. Since you can now watch videos with adds enabled you get a lot more content.

The new app is essentially a copy of the Android ICS you tube app which has been out for almost a year (October).

^ Yeah, but I prefer the mobile site.

In order to play a youtube video via airplay on the app, I have to go and mirror my screen (rather than just hitting the "AppleTV" button in the breakout video player on the website). Nothing major, but niggling enough to annoy me!

Maybe i'll prefer it when they update it for the larger screen, it could just be that I'm getting more content on the mobile site because I'm viewing it in Safari.

A few pages back I mentioned about how I like discovering little surprises that are not really 'announced' or highlighted. I just found a few minutes ago (actually when posting in the Destroy the Picture thread) that I can now upload photos onto TPR through the iPhone! No longer do I have to wait until I get home and drag the photos over just to upload (not that I'm going to write up an entire trip report on my phone). This will be great as I can now post stuff while I'm out at the park and use photos to support my posts! I guess there were 3rd party pay-for apps that were able to do this (Forum Runner I believe) but can now just do it in the improved Safari.

^ Yup, one of those "Why hasn't this been here since Day One???" things... Remember it took more than two years for the iPhone to get MMS!

In other news, the iPhone sold 5 million units this weekend (along with pre-orders).

CUPERTINO, California—September 24, 2012—Apple® today announced it has sold over five million of its new iPhone® 5, just three days after its launch on September 21, and more than 100 million iOS devices have been updated with iOS 6, the world’s most advanced mobile operating system. iPhone 5 is available in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and the UK, and will be available in 22 more countries on September 28 and more than 100 countries by the end of the year. Demand for iPhone 5 exceeded the initial supply and while the majority of pre-orders have been shipped to customers, many are scheduled to be shipped in October.

“Demand for iPhone 5 has been incredible and we are working hard to get an iPhone 5 into the hands of every customer who wants one as quickly as possible,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “While we have sold out of our initial supply, stores continue to receive iPhone 5 shipments regularly and customers can continue to order online and receive an estimated delivery date. We appreciate everyone’s patience and are working hard to build enough iPhone 5s for everyone.”

So, maybe this is why TPR was not allowed to tour any Foxxconn factories. Is one of these crazy iPhone factory riots going to be China's next Tiananmen Square?

Apple's recent release of its much anticipated iPhone 5 and its operating system iOS 6 has been overshadowed by problems stemming from its flawed new Maps app, which substituted previously built-in Google Maps after Apple and Google broke up over smart phone competitor Android. But that might be the least of the Cupertino company's problems.

NY Times reported that Foxconn Technology, a major supplier to some of the world’s electronics giants, including Apple, closed one of its large Chinese plants Monday after 5,000 police officers were sent to quell a rebellion by approximately 2,0000 live-in employees, which supposedly started as a personal altercation in one of the plants' dorms.

A spokesman from the company said the incident, which was supposedly confined to the dormitory, didn't damage any property or facilities and that some workers were mildly hurt while others were detained by police. The company added that the cause of the incident remained "under investigation."

However, one employee reportedly said the incident began when workers started brawling with security guards, while unconfirmed photographs and video circulated on social networking sites -- purporting to be from the factory -- showed smashed windows, riot police officers and large groups of workers milling around. Foxconn employs approximately 79,000 workers in this particular plant and about 1.1 million total workers in China.

And though Apple is absolutely not responsible for the incident, these and others PR mishaps regarding the production of its devices in Foxconn Chinese factories will surely add strain on a company long perceived as cool and innovative.

There's been a lot of things that Apple has been "late" to, but they have always made sure to do an excellent job integrating the new features when they do get added to iOS. I'm sure maps will be no different after Apple throws some cash at the problem (remember, Nokia payed $8 billion for navteq).

I can't really confirm it but I believe it's Siri-driven. Since you only have the 4, that sounds like it's the reason. Just like, in Settings > General > Accessibility, there's an option to turn on "Speak Selection" which is also powered by Siri. I'm pretty sure this feature is not available on the 4.

Speaking of which, making Siri say crazy things has not been any funner. When I'm bored I've gone into the notes, wrote out some crazy stuff and made her read it off...or I'll hop onto TPR and have Siri read off a trip report to me. Perhaps she can tell me bed time stories

^^^ they were late with copy & paste as well, but the solution was great. Sometimes you just have to wait a little longer.

The frustration this time is that they replaced something that worked amazingly well with something that kinda sucks.

That is interesting, and it's hard to see whether that will be a good or bad decision.

In the short term, I don't think anyone that wanted a iPhone 5 is passing up on it because of the lack of Google Maps, very few people anyways. Lacking turn by turn didn't stop anyone in the past. In the long term if Google Maps was released, it could possibly of hindered the development of Apple's maps if everyone opted to use it instead and a much smaller number of users aided in correcting errors and adding content for Apple. Things like streets, transportation, and other details Apple has to add on their own, and those corrections will take time. It also will also take a long tome, if ever, for apple to get something like street view which many people find really useful in actually seeing a destination and finding the correct driveway n things like that.

The thing with Apple users though is that you have the uneducated general users, who have no clue about any of this stuff and buy Apple products because of its public image, and the hard core fans that love Apple to the core. I don't think Google opting to not make an app for iOS6 will have any real effect at all.
