DerekRx Posted May 6, 2006 Posted May 6, 2006 Yeah, its Cinco de Mayo and I'm in a hotel. But thanks to my new lappy 710m, I'm able to share my night with y'all now instead of on Sunday! Since my flight for the week isn't until tomorrow, I decided to just stay overnight near the Philly airport, and hit Rock Bottom on the way down in King of Prussia. And my "Heath face" just makes me look content with the IPAs citrus flavors But made Talea look like an old man! LOL! Which Roni thought was bitter... And finished off the night with the Prussia's Pride IPA I then tried to train my pallette to the Munich brews with the Munich Gold First up, the closest thing to a Mexican beer for the day, the "El Jefe" Hefeweizen I've been here before, but not with people from work
Rugged One Posted May 6, 2006 Posted May 6, 2006 [Oh, SNAP!! Now I'm even more excited to try. I've also had a bottle of this in my fridge for a few weeks now and I'm looking for the right time to crack it open. Is this like the holy grail for hopheads or what??? Any way, I'll jump in with a couple photos of my own. I think that you'll definitley like the Ruination Adam. It's up there with the other Double/Imperial IPAs I've had recently. The Lagunitas is definitely more about the subtle flavors than the hops. It's getting harder to find regular IPAs that really drop the hop bomb on you (excluding Thunderhead). That's OK, that's what the big boys are for. Well I'm off to catch a flight to Tampa. Hopefully I'll have some pics up Tuesday night of what beer adventures await in Florida.
GaThrasher Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 Ok....tough to follow up in the almighty Derek's footsteps but here is my first beer PTR.... I started out with Terrapin's Spring entry of their 2006 Monster Beer Tour...the Rye Squared Very nice...hoppy yet smooth...8.5% is a great way to start the night I followed that up with Blue Star from North Coast Brewing Goes down sooo easy.. Then I tried some Belgian beer... Had lots of sediment in the bottom... that made its way into my glass... Had a weird aftertaste...buttery in a way... But satisfying nontheless... Then I had a Terrapin Cream Ale and some Tecates before finishing the night with one of my favorites, Terrapin's Wake and Bake...Coffee infused Imperial Oatmeal Stout.. Will put a smile on anyones face!
DerekRx Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 As you may know, (or even if you didn't you do now) I spent Saturday down in Myrtle Beach with the infamous Tommy, James, and Homey G. While they didn't drink beer like me, they were gracious enough to allow me to endulge in one of my favorite past times. It wasn't very hoppy, but I think its because they were out of IPA and they gave me the Clye's Pale Ale instead To finish off my morning (LOL) I ordered an IPA So good in fact that I finished it fast, and then tried the White Ale. Its mixture of corriander and lemon made for a nice refreshing summer ale My first brew would be the Raspberry Wheat, just for Heath. It was really tasty with a nice raspberry finish Since no parks opened until later in the afternoon, the first stop of the day is Liberty Brewing at Broadway at the Beach.
DerekRx Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 After some coaster riding, it was time for dinner. We decided to go back to Broadway at the Beach and eat at the Key West Grill. And with his buzz, James even decided to have a beer, the Clye's Pale Ale since he liked the taste of mine he had earlier This time I went with the Unfiltered Wheat, another good summer brew After the James vs Brian LIIT and margarita battle, we went back to Liberty so I could get my drink on! With $3 margaritas all day, we couldn't pass on getting one. I originally ordered an Anchor Steam, but they were out. Sam Adams is always a good fall back beer
DerekRx Posted May 8, 2006 Posted May 8, 2006 And for tonight, I'm just relaxing with some Spring Brew, seeing how I'm back where its Spring-like. Good stuff, but how I wish it was more like the nice summer stuff I had yesterday! Time for some Old Dominion
CoasterFanatic Posted May 8, 2006 Posted May 8, 2006 Bare Knuckle Stout at BGW. (Among other free beers at the Bud sponsored brainwashing school) Mmm. Premium. My pathetic attempt at the "Heath" face My sampler
FlyerACE1 Posted May 10, 2006 Posted May 10, 2006 Damn, it's gotten quiet around here lately. Derek, you drinking beer any more?? Any way, to re-fuel the Beer Thread, I'm placing a call to post your Top 5 (or more) Beers. This one is going to take some time to think about so I will reply back with mine in a day or two. Curious to hear everyone else's.
Rugged One Posted May 10, 2006 Posted May 10, 2006 I'm glad you weren't dissapointed by the Liberty brews Derek. Man, I wish I could have been there having one with ya! Lord knows I wasted many a Saturday afternoon in the bar there. Well, Kim and I just got back last night from a nice little four day visit in Florida. Of course when we weren't at the theme parks (and even when we were) we were finding some tasty beers to drink. Day 1 took us to Sea World and then over to Disney for some fun at the Boardwalk and Downtown Disney. Next up was the Gadzooks Pils. This one wasn't too bad either. I was actually impressed with the beers at Big River and look forward to returning to try some more. I first tried the Rocket Red Ale. This was a surprisingly hoppy red ale and was quite tasty. After Seaworld, we headed over to Disney's Boardwalk and the Big River Grille & Brewing Company for dinner. Then I sampled the Bare Knuckle Stout. I always try this in a vain attempt that maybe it will get better. It's actually not too horrible. It just has too watery a taste for a stout. My first beer of the trip! The new spring seasonal from A/B, Spring Heat Spiced Wheat. I had had this last month at BGW and really dug it. This is a nice citrus tasting wheat beer that goes down really good on a hot day at the park. Gee we're at a Busch Park. I wonder if we'll visit the Hospitality House? Of course we will!
Rugged One Posted May 10, 2006 Posted May 10, 2006 Day 2 took us to Universal Orlando. Kim and I have been here so many times now, that the place has really become more of a laid back visit for us. Which of course means when those mid-afternoon lines get too long, we look to hole up somewhere and have a cold one. Where I had my only fruity drink of the trip. A Cyclone. We had originally planned to hang out at our favorite Citywalk locale, the piano bar at Pat O'Briens, but we were so tired from a lack of sleep the previous two nights that we just decided to grab some dinner and head home. You can't beat the view either. Cheers to the Hulk! Some couple decided that they needed to seat their 3-year daughter right next to me at the bar, which got a little annoying, so we took our ourselves to the Backwater Bar up at the front of the park. Where I proceded to have another Fosters. ....and a Heineken. Had myself a Fosters... Later we headed over to the Alchemy Bar for happy hour. Where I tried a a Lone Palm Ale, the Margaritville house beer. We had some lunch at Margaritaville.
Rugged One Posted May 10, 2006 Posted May 10, 2006 Day 3 took us to Animal Kingdom in the morning and Cypress Gardens in the afternoon. After that we headed back to Tampa for the evening. Followed by a Boulder Beer Mojo IPA. A little light on the hops but not too bad. They did however have a decent selection of micros on tap, so we had to make do with what they had. First up was a Avery Redpoint Ale. Not too shabby. Of course we had to stop back at the Tampa Bay Brewing Company. They are actually getting ready to move to some swanky new digs down the street which unfortunately meant that they didn't have any of their house brews on tap.
Rugged One Posted May 10, 2006 Posted May 10, 2006 Finally, day 4 took us to BGT before flying back home in the evening. Finally, had an Amberbock with lunch at the Zambia Smokehouse. Gotta love the view! The new Tilt energy beer. I used to make the ginseng for this at my old job. Kim and I both agreed it smelled and tasted like cough syrup. Michelob Ultra Amber. Blech! I take the "regular Bud" versus "skunky Bud" challenge. We did BGT's version of beer school. As you can see, it's a little different than the setup at BGW's version. The class itself was a little different as well. Gratuitous double fisting shot! Of course I had to go for some more Spiced Wheat. Yeah, another Hospiltality House. Why doesn't BGW have one of these?
DerekRx Posted May 10, 2006 Posted May 10, 2006 I've been too busy taking medication to get rid of the evil cold/ear infection I got from flying too much to be able to drink for the last couple of days. Apparently Heath was too busy drinking to post what he was drinking! You've gotta take a laptop with ya, man! Anyway, I'm glad to say that I'm feeling better and now down to only 3 meds, so I can drink again! Man it feels good to get back to the hops To celebrate drinking, its time for a Top 5 beer and a Top 5 Woodie, Thunderhead
DerekRx Posted May 11, 2006 Posted May 11, 2006 I don't think I can do a top 5 beers, Adam. I can break it into categories like IPAs, Stouts, Weizens, Lagers, fruities, Belgians, seasonals, and others, but I really can't put them all together, much like I can't do it with wood and steel coasters, they're just too different. I guess my overall favorite beer would be HopDevil, of course, and I prefer many IPAs to other types of beer right now, but that's as far as I can go.
FlyerACE1 Posted May 11, 2006 Posted May 11, 2006 I don't think I can do a top 5 beers, Adam. I guess my overall favorite beer would be HopDevil, of course, and I prefer many IPAs to other types of beer right now, but that's as far as I can go. Gotta say, I think I agree with ya, Derek. The more I think about it, it's hard to come up with a definitive 5. And just like coasters, my Top 10 are probably interchangeable on any given day. Plus I can't rank wood and steel together. Aside from the different styles of beer, I also think they can be put into categories that range in drinkability like session beers, beers you can pound and high alcohol beers. If I had to come up with one beer I'd say is consistently my favorite, it's Sam Adams Boston Lager. With all the unique microbrews I drink, you simply can not beat it for reliability and availability. Sam makes me smile. Pure and simple. For my other all time faves, I have these: Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA, Magic Hat Blind Faith, Victory Hop Wallop and Hop Devil, Pyramid Thunderhead IPA, Troegs Hop Back, Franziskaner Hefeweizen, Allagash White, Shipyard Pumpinkead Ale, Stone IPA, Dogfish Head Worldwide Stout, Spaten Optimator and Oktoberfest, Sam Adams OktoberFest, Sea Dog Blueberry Wheat, Great Lakes Dortmunder Gold and Sweetwater 420, and Hoegaarden. Any of those beers I can probably sit down to, drink many of and simply be happy. Of course, most beers do that but the above especially do. The list obviously keeps growing. By the way, we need to bring back the annual Hop Olympics. We'll have to think of a good time and venue. Perhaps make it bigger and better than ever!! I'll end this post with a beer I had a while back and never posted the photos to. This was a very nice Belgian brew. I highly recommend it. And my sinister smile tells it all. Combine sweet candy-like Belgian goodness with some bitter hops and we have a winner! Ellen thoroughly enjoys her glass of Hop-It. Urthel Hop-It. I bought this one on a whim based on its description and it surely was a superior hoppy Belgian brew!
Rugged One Posted May 11, 2006 Posted May 11, 2006 Apparently Heath was too busy drinking to post what he was drinking! You've gotta take a laptop with ya, man! Yeah, a laptop is definitely on the shortlist of major purchases for us. Of course, we'd be able to afford one a lot quicker if we didn't keep going on all of these damn trips! As for the beer favorites, it's pretty tough for me to come up with a difinitive list, as it's constantly changing depending on what I'm in the mood for. For favorite types, I really dig wheats, doublebocks, marzens, imperial stouts, and of course IPAs in any form. Whatever brings the hop insanity to my lips! Went back to an old fav of mine from one of my favorite breweries. The Bear Republic Hot Rod Rye. This has a strong hop presence that blends really well with the maltiness of the rye. I haven't had the chance to partake in too many ryes but I really dig the style and look forward to trying some others. The Bear Republic Hot Rod Rye. It really revs up the 'ole tastbuds.
DerekRx Posted May 11, 2006 Posted May 11, 2006 Found a few of these laying aboot, decided it was time to have another one before heading off to Canadia, eh. Sure hits the spot after a day at work The Alpha King, a nice citrusy IPA
DerekRx Posted May 11, 2006 Posted May 11, 2006 Time for one of my favorite IPAs, definitely in my top 3 in the IPA world. Love the hoppiness, the citrus, and the alcohol finishing bite Stone IPA from San Diego
PhishyBrewer Posted May 12, 2006 Posted May 12, 2006 Been busy lately. Here's what I'm drinking now. What's I've been busy with lately. I returned my iBook today and got this instead. New Belgium's Skinny Dip... it's alright.
rollermonkey Posted May 12, 2006 Posted May 12, 2006 I figure I'll post the (short) tale of my first, last and only beer attempt: 1993, San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium, Padres vs Royals, the beer: Budweiser. It was a 'corporate outing' with my first command in the Navy, the Padres lost, and the beer tasted like I imagine warm urine would taste. An all around cruddy experience. I haven't tried another beer since. (I've drunk a little hard liquor, though.)
DerekRx Posted May 13, 2006 Posted May 13, 2006 So tonight I found myself in Canadia with Nicole. I was in need of beverage, so we drove until we saw a beackon of hope! Yeah, I'm enjoying Canada's #1 Red, the Richard's Red while wearing my awesome Rx Brew shirt, I'm awesome, I know and then I made the BEST Heath Face EVER! It looks just like him, doesn't it!? But do you see who I'm with! Who cares about the beer! OK, so they didn't have the greatest selection of beer Dude, its called "The Keg" they must have beer
DerekRx Posted May 14, 2006 Posted May 14, 2006 Last night it was back to The Keg for dinner and drinks, but this time with BACT members in tow. Even Glutenfree had a nice Taylor's Port wine for dessert Note to others: if you plan on forking Nicole in a public place, she will "a salt" you Nicole has plans of a salt on Derek She seems to enjoy a good forking I'm not even going to wait until I'm back at the hotel to fork Nicole Dave and Janna shared a Lindeman's wine, until Dave dumped his on the table. It smelled fruity! Once again I had the Rickards Red, since the other 3 beers were boring
matteocrepaldi Posted May 14, 2006 Posted May 14, 2006 It was an Italian beer from Turin called Menabrea. It was very good; one of the best I've tried. There's a friend of mine who keeps talking about a beer called Slalom Strong. Does anybody have tried it? How is it?
CoasterFanatic Posted May 14, 2006 Posted May 14, 2006 Last night Catrina, Shaun, Soup and myself went to the Sharp Edge Creekhouse in Crafton, PA. If any of you beer fans head to Kennywood this summer, give me a ring. The is THE beer stop! I had: AYINGER CELEBRATOR ALLAGASH xxx abbey HACKER PSCHOOR hefe-weiss UNIBROUE MAUDITE strong red ale 8% SOUTHERN TIER IPA BELL 2-HEARTED ALE LAGUNITAS IPA Catrina had: LINDEMANS framboise (raspberry) Shaun and Soup just drank a bunch of draft Belgiums that I couldn't remember if I tried.
