Several times a year we go through and move Photo Trip Reports from this forum to Photo Trip Report Archive. We look for reports that have been inactive for at least a couple of months. We don’t want to stop a discussion or comments on a report Once they are moved, there can be no further postings. Right now reports that have been inactive since the end of January have been moved to the archive.

The biggest reason for not getting your PTR moved is the location of the pictures. All photos must be uploaded to the TPR server. We will not move a report where the photos are linked like to Imageshack or Photobucket. Nothing is more annoying then to bring up a report and see a white box with a red x or a bandwidth exceeded message.

Another reason to upload your photos with your report is so that they may be included in the Park Index. The rules for getting into the Park Index are a lot stricter then the Photo Trip Report Archive. Only the best reports and photos will be included. We do not have the time to upload the photos of a trip report that have been linked. Occasionally we will do an individual picture if it fills a need but it is too time consuming for a whole report. There are a number of good reports that fall into this category.

So what makes a good trip report? That is kind of subjective but I will give you a few things I look for.

Don’t include blurry pictures. Unless the intent is to show the speed of the coaster flying by with the background in focus, don’t include it. Learn to use the macro feature of your camera. I see a lot of pictures out of focus because you are too close to the subject. Pictures of tickets and speedometers come to mind.

You don’t have to include every single picture you have taken at the park in your report. We don’t need to see all 72 shots of Tatsu that you took. Include only the best and unusual ones. Remember most of the parks have been heavily photographed and seeing picture after picture of the same coaster gets a little boring if there is not something different about them.

Try to keep your picture size to 800x600 or less. It takes a long time to load over sized pictures and it is annoying having to use the slide bar to see all of it. I usually don’t read a report if the pictures are over sized. Plus we will not consider using them in the index either.

I’m sure I will think of other things later. Feel free to comment.

Also remember your PTR does not have to be all coasters, showing a variety of rides at the park really helps people get a feel for the place.

There are plenty of fanboys out there for all types of rides: RapidsNerd likes Rapid Rides, CTUAgent (Thai) loves Enterprises, I love Spinning Tea Cups and Condors, and everyone knows Robb loves Tilt-A-Whirls and Spinning Dragons.

I know there are closet Looping Starship, Drop Tower and Chair Swing fanboys and girls out there, too.

Warning for all: take great caution when boarding a spinning ride with Larry

Larry is a madman on the Looper at Knoebels. Just a glimpse of the fire in his eyes struck so much fear into my heart that I nearly died on the spot.

^ I think Mel Kiper has Larry listed as the #2 overall pick regarding the Flyers as well. He's a Knoebels all-star.

(MOD EDIT by larrygator: Ted (Coaster Fanatic) is more Flyer Idol)

By the way, Bob, this was a great reminder to folks out there. Just wanted to state that for the record.

This topic also serves as a reminder that I have not ever done a Photo TR and I've been here for over four years. I must do one---even if it's some sort of random TR.

I love the Trip Report Archive, but I don't look at it nearly as often as the Park Index--simply because it's not really organized like the Index is. Still, I'll sometimes check it out the way I sometimes listen to the radio instead of a CD--because I don't want to know what's going to come on next.

I try to look at every Photo TR that gets posted on the main forum, just out of curiosity. But I have to admit that I tend to give up once I see the comment, "This one's really blurry, but I'm posting it anyways."

/The beauty of digital cameras is that you can take chances. But I don't need to see every chance you took!

Well, so much for me ever posting a PTR ever again...

Remember, kids, I SUCK AT PHOTOGRAPHY! But I do try to make up for it with the captions. And Ice Bat.

^ That's a good point Dave.

You can have the best pictures ever, but if your captions are boring, I'm not interested. You MORE than make up for it.

The ONLY time a blurry picture is acceptable is when your driving down the freeway and see some track on a flatbed and have to take a pic with your phone going 70mph.

*** Shameless bump ****

Lots of good reports are not being featured on the front page, moved to the archive or used in the park index because the pictures are not on the TPR server.

Upload your photos! Don't link them to Imageshak or Photobucket and such.!
