Question: Rain and Six Flags Great Adventure

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking of heading down to SFGAdv on Saturday from Boston, but don't want to get there and have to pull a Griswald if the park is closed. This might be the only weekend I can get there this season and, of course, it's going to rain.

Current forecast, rain likely before noon. I know some of the smaller parks up here in New England will close if someone spits on the ground. Hoping that SF generally remains open.

My last visit it was actually raining pretty hard! I got to ride El Toro, Batman, Nitro, Medusa (which won't be open until the end of May)...some flats I never get to ride. It's mucho fun minus all the pelting rain in your face! It can hurt! I got lots of funny pics that day too. I put my camera in a clear plastic bag, and that worked really well! Plus we got the Batman ponchos.

I think if you are coming from far, to maybe rethink it if there will be bad weather, because you never know, and KK will surely be closed.

When I went to SFGAdv, the forecast was for light rain pretty much all day. The park opened like normal, and it ended up only really raining for an hour or two, really lightly. The park was dead all day, and the longest wait I had was probably for the front seat on Ka in the (very light) rain, which was extremely uncomfortable. I waited about 40 minutes for that ride because they shut it down for rain while I was in line.

Me and a friend went to SFGADV last summer with thunderstorms expected. All the rides except Kingda Ka were open, even when it started raining. They didnt close them until it started pouring.

However, later in the day there were some thunderstorms far away and they closed down every outdoor ride in the park for an hour and a half. It was quite frustrating as the sun was shining pretty much the entire time.

Of course we had to make fun of the situation. My video can be seen here http://www.themeparkreview.com/coastertube/play.php?vid=SFGADV_um0a

The only issue is that if enough people don't show up, the park will close early.

In September last year there was a Season Passholder night, it was raining all day but at 5 when the event started it was misting, and later cleared up. They still closed 2 1/2 hours early even after people called and were told the park was open from 5 - 10. Plenty of people showed up only to be turned away after they had called to make sure the park was open. 410 people were in the park that night.

The same weekend, they closed early on Saturday and Sunday

I actually made a visit in May last year and was showers all day, but most rides seemed to be operating fine! I had a ride of Kingda Ka when it was ever so slightly raining though and was probably the most painful ride of my life! Then when I went on Nitro there was a brief hailstorm but was over in 2 minutes, however once again very painful haha!

Apparently they decided to do this today...I went there at 2:30 and it was closed. It was hardly raining and it's now 4:30 and not raining at all. Apparently they decided to close at 12.

Yep, they closed at 12. I was there riding El Toro when I was told that the park was closing and had to get off. The park was empty today (We had to recruit people to ride El Toro because we didn't have enough people for"safety" reasons before we could ride it) so I guess they were just making sure that they weren't going to lose money. It sucked having to leave that early.

^ I just don't under stand that "Can't run an empty train" garbage. I have been on many many empty coaster trains (just myself on the ride) without problems, yet I do sometimes still run into this. I mean, they cycle the trains empty before they open the ride (after the dummies), so why the heck couldn't they run a train with one/two people?

It just seems that every time I have run into ride ops saying something like that, it struck me as "we are lazy and don't want to bother cycling near empty trains all day... so just wait for more people." I really don't think it has anything to do with safety.

That's what I thought too, but they assured us that they always test it with dummies, so there might actually be a reason for it. However, on the last run of the day, they sent it out with less than 18 people so idk.
