Were the cable cars built specifically for tourist use?

Not originally, they were built for public transportation. Now they are mostly a tourist attraction.

Back to HHN, who is going this year?

Okay, then...let's say that I should get a resident's rake-off at all the tourist crap at Fisherman's Wharf. Better?

As to HHN: I'm afraid that I'll be travelling during October, and won't be going. But I will simply say, to wind up my rants in this thread, that based on my previous experience, they don't check for Florida IDs at the gate.

The site has been updated. This year's theme is "Tales of Terror". It will take place at IOA. Also, they've put up all the ticket prices, including AP and Florida resident discounts.

The Frequent Fear Pass costs exactly the same as a one night admission now. Imagine that. Since I have an AP, I even get it for $10 less.

I'll be going to HHN, but probably on October 21. Phobia will be on Oct. 22 and MNSSHP will be on Oct. 23.

As for Phobia prices, I think it's included with the one-day park admission, so if you have a passport to CG/WA, then you can get in for free. Hey, a night ride on the Fiesta Express sounds so cool!

Yes, I understand that most HHN attendees are "locals," which in this case apparently encompasses everything from the Panhandle to the Keys. The question is whether simply averaging out prices - $50 for everyone, say, instead of 60/35 or whatever, would cause a drop in attendance or revenues.

When I go to developing countries, I'm used to two-tier pricing, which allows poor locals to go to attractions at a fraction of what I pay. That seems just. But like I said, why poor Donald Trump would pay less to HHN than I do baffles my sense of justice.

And as far as your "piece of the pie" goes...Florida doesn't even have a personal income tax; virtually all its taxation is regressive. What tourists pay in hotel tax, sales tax, outrageous airport fees, etc., keeps your economy afloat and your pie in berries. I live in San Francisco, whole swaths of which are given over to tourist tat, and the only admission breaks locals get are to a couple of tax-supported institutions - the zoo and an art museum. By your lights, visitors should be paying nearly twice as much as I do to ride the cable cars...not that the cable cars are anything more than a theme-park ride at this point.

The discounts are designed to do two things.

1) Sell tickets on nights which NEVER sell out. (i.e weekday or sunday nights). The only HHN days which usually sell out are weekends and whatever day Halloween is on. Weekday nights will usually only see 20 min lines for houses as opposed to 2 hour ones. The discounts are designed to draw locals who even though they might have to work the next day will spend a few hours.

2) Give a good idea of attendance more in advance. With most of the discounts (fl res and advance savings if they are offering one) you have to purchase the tickets in advance - this allows better planning of staffing rather than paying tons of overtime that night when you realize it is busier than you thought.

I know this was mentioned, but those of you who REALLY like HHN, this is a great deal!

I have not been to HHN in several years, but the trick back then was to try to go both early in the season and NOT on a weekend. I did go to BGT's Halloween thing a few years back and it was WAY too crowded. Of course, the worst thing was the traffic into the park. That should be fixed now that they have widened the road and installed the bridge under which the trams travel.

M'kay, I was just checking out the HHN site and AP people, correct me if I'm wrong, but are the Off-Peak night rates CHEAPER than they were last year for AP holders?!?!? I swear to gosh I don't remember paying $24.75 for my 1 day visit on a Thursday last year. As stated earlier in this thread, I paid about $55 last year WITH my AP discount AND the Express pass (which if I recall, was about $20).

This is a heckuva deal for AP holders on an off-peak night!

Posted

Yes. I think they're really trying to discourage APH's from going on peak nights. The FFP is even $50, which is $10 less than an undiscounted one night ticket. They probably figure that the more they raise the prices for the general public, the more likely they are to buy AP's.

Wow, yeah I just checked out the site and this is awesome!!!

I do believe that at $24.75 that is cheaper than last year and maybe even the year before that!

ROBB!!! PICK A DATE AND LET'S BUY TICKETS!!!!

Do you mean the "Super" Express passes?...Or the standard Express passes?

I hate the Universal Express pass machines, we always have a hard time getting them to scan our annual passes. Whatever is planned, is what we will do. Oh will there be any theme park visits that weekend as well?

Posted

Woot! We will probably do the 11 nights for less than the price of 1 for $49.50. A good annual pass holder bonus. Are you guys going on a Wed, Thursday or Sunday?

Posted

Most definitely!

I have no desire to be at the park with my 50,000 closest friends!

We will be there on a Thursday. Probably the 20th or 27th.

Yae! Stacey and I will be there also!

ps...there are going to be some pretty cool enhancements to Mickey's not-so-scary this year also ..so make sure you go as well!
