Wow, I never thought about that, but it makes sense.

Fortunately for me, I'm a cheapskate so I just stay in the 1 star hotels that give you the plastic cups in packages. No worries there.

It's honestly just better not to worry about stuff like that.

If you knew about all the things that could have been done to your food, etc you'd probably end up a nervous wreck living in a bubble.

What doesn't kill you, will make you stronger ... most of the time.

After working 5 years in a bakery I learned what to eat, and what not to eat.

Did you watch the video?

Although this is gross, if it honestly bothers you that much bring your own glasses. I'd rather just not know, like Paul said , I'm sure there's a ton of stuff we don't know about and frankly, its going to happen so why worry?

Just my 2 cents.

Yeah, and why wash your hands after you go to the bathroom or before you eat then?

I'm not the type of germ-o-phobe who sprays down his desk and phone at work every day with Lysol. But, if I can find a simple way to possibly avoid getting sick when I travel like not using hotel glasses, then I'm certainly going to do it.

The disturbing thing about this report was that it was pretty nice hotels like Sheraton and Embassy Suites that were doing this.

Well, um, yeah, it is gross. And yeah, truthfully, any handrail anywhere in the world is potentially hazardous to your health if you wanna look at it that way. The point here is that you're paying good money to stay at a places such as Embassy Suites, etc.

Sorry, but if I'm paying $100+ a night, I'd like to know (at least) that my water glass wasn't cleaned with fecal matter, thanks.

Exactly. Putting glasses in the dishwasher = not a lot to ask.

I'm really lazy about cleaning, but even I manage to stick my glasses in the dishwasher and run it every few days.

No, I didn't.

Although I've read an article recently on the lack of cleanliness of hotel cups, etc. So I'm pretty sure I know what the video is probably talking about.

Yes, it's really gross. But nothing that I'm really going to lose sleep over.

Actually, the ammonia in your pee is a dissenfectant, which is better than what you can do washing your hands. It's the door handles, flushers, and faucet handles that you should be afraid of.

Moral: Pee on hands. It kills germs, and you won't need batting gloves when you play baseball.

Death from infectious disease will give you plenty of sleep.

EDIT: note to self....never room with Paul or Matt.

I'm aware that urine is usually sterile, but I wasn't talking about that particular body function.

There isn't much ammonia in urine, unless your liver is shot. Ammonia is quite toxic, so the liver converts it to urea for excretion.

Yeah, I never used those glasses as I wasn't sure how those things are cleaned. Now I know

I'm sure in most of the hotels they are cleaned in a proper way but I don't take the risk.

Which is kind of funny since Paul and I have roomed together!

And no, we didn't sit around peeing on each others hands, and drinking from hotel glasses.

Hence why I use those plastic cups right next to the ice bucket. At least then I know it's been wrapped and kept from the outside world.

^Well, I don't know many fast-food restaurants that have actual glasses in lieu of cups. I can tell you one thing, though: I work at A&W, and we always try to get our mugs as clean as possible, short of setting it on fire for sterilization.

Haha. I'm all for good hygiene. However I realize there's some things which I can't control.

Hell, I'm an environmental data manager. Some of the sites I work on are quite a bit more messed up then traces of fecal matter in a cup.

It's probably a good thing that I have little chemistry background, so I don't REALLY know what I'm looking at.

Just to add to the topic: Local news just ran a story about the level of bacteria in restaurant ice. Turns out 47 out of 100 restaurants tested had high levels, and 11 of those had less bacteria in their toilet water than their ice.

That's kind of misleading though.

The toilet water is probably filled with chemicals designed to kill all bacteria.

Having some ice cubes with bacteria in them is going to be better then ice cubes with bleach in them.
