shepp Posted May 13, 2007 Posted May 13, 2007 Are well-strapped eyeglasses allowed on Storm Runner (yay, TTD and KK) or banned (boo, XCelerator)? I'd love to mentally prepare myself if I'm going to have to ride blind. There were few things more irritating than finally making it onto Tatsu and being required to take off my securely attached glasses and ride with them precariously stuck in an open pocket instead. I mean: no eye protection, possibility of specs being damaged, mega-greatly increased likelihood of them falling...what's up with that?
FeelTheFORCE Posted May 13, 2007 Posted May 13, 2007 I wear glasses as well. I used to wear a strap, but now I just always wear my shorts with the zipper pockets every time I go to a park. It's a lot easier. My eyes are pretty bad, but it doesn't bother me, I can still get the general idea of what I'm seeing. I'm not sure about Storm Runner, though, the last time I was at HP, it wasn't there.
shepp Posted May 13, 2007 Author Posted May 13, 2007 ^ Yeah, if i know that I'll have to ditch the glasses (as at KBF), I'll take a case and have a secure pocket to put it in. But I was (no pun intended) blindsided at Tatsu, when I was already locked in restraints when the op told me to take off my glasses and put them in a pocket - not physically easy in those restraints, lemme tell you - or leave them with him on the platform (I don't think so). It would seem a simple matter to post a sign at the beginning of a queue, say were height restrictions are, stating that even Croakied glasses were banned. But hell, I've never been on a ride where someone's glasses went flying. Unlike cell phones.
splzero Posted May 13, 2007 Posted May 13, 2007 I Have eyeglasses and i usually hold onto them. a few times ive been asked to clip them to my shirt (which is the stupidest idea). i normally just try and hide them behind a restraint so the ride ops cant see it.
Vekoma Fan Boy Posted May 13, 2007 Posted May 13, 2007 Why not get a set of riding contacts? They can't make you take off what they can't see. And even if you did lose one mid ride, the worst thing would be that you'd lost a contact, and you would still have your glasses.
BarryH Posted May 13, 2007 Posted May 13, 2007 If I remember from my last visit to Hersheypark in August 2004, the sign in the station said something like anything that is not strapped to your body can't come along with you on the ride. Anything like backpacks, purses, kwepie dolls, etc. have to be left on the platform. A well-strapped pair of glasses should be OK. I did travel with a family and 3 out of 4 of them worse glasses. They all had straps and they wore them on all sorts of rides and coasters. So strap those glasses tight! Use duct tape if need be!
coastrfreak2000 Posted May 13, 2007 Posted May 13, 2007 ^^ Contacts would probably dry out very quickly on a coaster because of the wind, so it's probably not the best idea.
Vekoma Fan Boy Posted May 13, 2007 Posted May 13, 2007 ^Use Eyedrops then? And even then shouldn't they be able to get moist again considering a ride is 2:30 on average and the wait between rides is 45min-1 hour... I could be wrong though.
gisco Posted May 13, 2007 Posted May 13, 2007 ^^ Contacts would probably dry out very quickly on a coaster because of the wind, so it's probably not the best idea. Try blinking, it works for me to keep my contacts wet. I think Robb wares contacts also.
BarryH Posted May 13, 2007 Posted May 13, 2007 I wear my contacts all the time on coasters and I've never had a problem. Sometimes they do dry out, but I have the daily wear ones. If I happen to lose a pair or one really dries out, I can just pop in a new set.
Peejay Posted May 13, 2007 Posted May 13, 2007 ^^ Me too. Normally I wear monthly contacts. But when I'm going to a themepark I use daily ones and put an extra set in my pocket. They are cheaper so when you lose one it's no big deal. And they are available with some moisturizing stuff in it so they will stay wet all day. So far I havn't had a problem on coasters with them. Never lost one.
Ccron10 Posted May 13, 2007 Posted May 13, 2007 I wore glasses on half of the coasters I rode last year, but after riding Twister at Knoebels, I took them off since then because they would feel like they would be pressed right up against my eyeballs! If it's a coaster like Trailblazer or a Wild Mouse, I'd keep them on, but if it's a coaster like SR or any coaster that goes over 45mph, I'd take them off.
supermanrosfan0810 Posted May 14, 2007 Posted May 14, 2007 I've never had a problem with my contacts. I rode kingda ka 3 times and S:RoS at SFNE 6 times in a row wearing them with no problem at all!
yankees15 Posted May 14, 2007 Posted May 14, 2007 I also have NO problems wearing contacts on coasters. Storm Runner is fine with contacts. Also, my mom has worn glasses on Storm Runner but maybe the ops didn't notice or something.
Erik Johnson Posted May 14, 2007 Posted May 14, 2007 When we rode Storm Runner last June, we were simply asked if we had a strap on our glasses. Since we did, they allowed us to ride with them on. It was the same case with Kingda Ka (June 06)and Xcelerator (March 07).
redfoot12 Posted May 14, 2007 Posted May 14, 2007 Robb wears contacts? You'd think he'd get Lasik just to ride coasters unfettered by anything.
pete4winds Posted May 14, 2007 Posted May 14, 2007 I wear my contacts all the time on coasters and I've never had a problem. Sometimes they do dry out, but I have the daily wear ones. If I happen to lose a pair or one really dries out, I can just pop in a new set. Same here. I've done both, and when I was still wearing my glasses I always had a Croakie at theme parks. I'd never been asked to remove my glasses, and now that I'm back to wearing contacts again, no problem. I also have six pairs of contacts on standby (I also wear disposables) for my upcoming Hershey trip, just in case I lose a pair in the new waterpark.

It was the same case with Kingda Ka (June 06)and Xcelerator (March 07). Well, that's encouraging. Oddly though, last time I rode Xcelerator, nine months before you did, the ops insisted I take mine off, despite my nice, tight Croakies. So maybe the policy has officially changed? I know the first time I rode Speed:The Ride, it was No Glasses, but a couple of years later, there was no problem wearing mine for multiple rerides. Contacts aren't a bad idea - my partner wears 'em on coasters and, except for an occasional lost-under-the-eyelid moment, never has problems. But my vision is fairly well screwed up, making getting used to contacts a chore, and frankly, if I'm going 70, 80, or 128 mph, I'd rather have shatter-resistant plastic protecting my eyeballs, anyway.
Erik Johnson Posted May 14, 2007 Posted May 14, 2007 ^^ I might have been lucky that the ride operators that were working that shift did not mind that I was wearing them. We had them on tight with our Ironman glasses strap.
