Ok so a tanker truck caught on fire and made a bridge fall. WOW. The driver suffered second degree burns... no one else was hurt... Thankfully!! Here is the full story -> http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070429/ap_on_re_us/highway_collapse_9

I wonder how long it will take to fix that?

Wow...to think I drove on that very bridge a month or so ago...

Well this is going to make visiting my NorCal friends rather difficult. Maybe folks who live in that area can post here what routes are being used as detours and what the new traffic senarios are? I hope it'll still be possible to get over to someplace like Novato coming from the I-5...

Mainly side streets right now. I try not to go that way often, but when I have to, things are going to be a pain in the ass. I guess 680 will be my only way to getting to SFDK.

That fire must be been intense to cause the section to collapse.

Anyone wanting to drive a different route can look at the local "maps" or use the Internet for the quickest way.

But this makes me

If you don't mind me asking, um, why?

Dark humor... I know it wouldn't be funny if people died or anything, but I just find this funny for some reason.

That was pretty crazy...I'm sure it will take a while to fix especially because of it's location in the Macarthur Maze. In some of the pictures, the road looks like it was some sort of taffy because of how it bent and melted.

Easy fix. Give the contractors a completion date. Give them a $25,000 per day bonus for every day they finish ahead of schedule. If they miss the deadline, fine them $25,000 per day. It will amaze you how quickly it gets rebuilt

^ The only problem with that is what if they rushed through the job to get the bonus but did a really bad job which causes the bridge to fall again. Would they have to fix it or would someone new be hired?

That was just what the state of Alabama did when the same thing happened here. In Jan of 2002 and in Oct of 2004 two seperate overpasses at the I-20/59 and I-65 interchange were destroyed when tankers exploded under them.

They worked 24-7 after both accidents. The first one took 37 days to reopen, the second one 47 days. The key was in who they got to rebuild it. They were actually re-built by one of the best know construction companies in Alabama (Brassfield and Gorrie, who also built the Georgia Aquarium and Visionland).

My uncle lives in Oakland, CA. He said that it is going to be very hard to get around town using the side streets, because this will take a while to fix.
