Canobie Fan Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 Ewww Coney Island makes me :-\ lol looks like you have more snow then we have got all year
crazyrider06 Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 Good trip report… there was snow on the ground I’m jealous
verticalzero Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 Nice photo's and report. I want that sign which says "Cyclone, How sweet it is". This is one of the coasters I dream of riding someday, it has stood the test of time very well. Shame the "Thunderbolt" was not saved as well. Will the "Parachut Jump" ever operate again.? Could have a new life as a "Drop Tower".
CycloneMan Posted January 30, 2007 Author Posted January 30, 2007 Thanks guys! Funny thing about the Thunderbolt. There was a house under the Thunderbolt that my Aunt Mae actually lived in. My whole family is from Coney Island (both sides) so of course it all intertwines. The Parachute was supposed to be reopned by now, but it hasn't. And yes, we have snow on the ground. And we went to the beach anyway .
ECZenith Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 Good stuff man, I love "coasters in the snow" pictures. Still haven't EVER been to Coney island and I'm only about 4 hrs off... Cyclone looks great but everything else... not so much.
bulldogmom Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 Thanks for the TR. It's always fun seeing how parks look in the off-season, with "naked" rides and stuff. Kind of creepy.
Dailey Enterprizes Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 Those are awesome pictures that you guys took. Did you guys manage to get over to the Battery Park/Staten Island Ferry? I'm wandering this because they were suppose renovate that incredibly shady and dangerous subway station that is underneath all that and I'm wondering if it's done. Oh wait.. Was this it?
larrygator Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 ^actaully that looks like the old Whitehall Street station across the street from South Ferry. They must have recently renamed it South Ferry (based on the signs) in anticipation of linking it by underground walkway to the Old South Ferry station. The underground connection between the station is not done yet.
CycloneMan Posted January 31, 2007 Author Posted January 31, 2007 It is the Whitehall station. The R train doesn't stop at the ferry terminal, the 1 train does. And the real ferry train station is still digusting, and round.
Canobie Fan Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 *highjacks topic* I just got around to adding my Astroland photos from this summer to my site http://canobiefanhome.ath.cx/cgi-bin/pics.cgi?dir=astroland
CycloneMan Posted January 31, 2007 Author Posted January 31, 2007 That old guy behind the pick up booth was a friend of my grandfather. But my Uncle is the Manager there. He sists behind the booth! -Dainan "He let me operater whenI was 5 on a slow day !" Rafferty
Jayjay719 Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 Nice trip report! I still have to go to Astroland and get my Cylone credit. But thanks for the offseason update!
Dailey Enterprizes Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 It is the Whitehall station. The R train doesn't stop at the ferry terminal, the 1 train does. And the real ferry train station is still digusting, and round. Yea I know, I'm very glad that New York is re-doing that whole subway section underneath that part of Manhattan Island. It was always congested and really cramp because only two cars from the subway train can fit inside the station. I hope the new station is finished when I go back to New York this year.
larrygator Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 ^five cars fit into the station at South Ferry and I don't think they plan on changing that as part of the renovations
Dailey Enterprizes Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 ^Oh yea, South Ferry is fine, but it's the older Ferry station that needs the makeover.
CycloneMan Posted January 31, 2007 Author Posted January 31, 2007 There is only one real Ferry station. The other station is the Whitehall station. It just says SOuth ferry because it's across the street, but it's not the Ferry train station. -Dainan "Confused?" Rafferty
imbordisux Posted February 4, 2007 Posted February 4, 2007 "Coney Island", as a whole, isn't much to write home about, just about all of the rides are very basic flats that can be found anywhere, though as a slice of history, it really deserves to be visited once. Cyclone, though... say what you will wooden coasters that beat the crap out of you, but for my money, it's pretty much the most perfect coaster possible. Just complete chaos from start to finish. It really warms my heart to know that, in an age when just about every manufacturer is trying to make their coasters as smooth as possible (not that that's a bad thing, I love B&M), there is a company like The Gravity Group that still believes in the "runaway train" style of ride. For any coaster newbies who want to know what these rides used to be like, you owe it to yourself to get up to NY for what's truly a masterpiece of wild, out-of-control fun. El Toro might propel you out of the seat further, but there's nothing that throws you around and makes you feel like you're duct-taped to a bucking bull quite like Cyclone.
