thomas2 Posted December 19, 2006 Posted December 19, 2006 In the newspaper: Beijing is going to built the world tallest Ferris Wheel for 2008. This is mainly because the Olympic Games will be held that year. It is going to be 208 meters tall (682.5 ft). Each of the 48 air-conditioned units will carry 40 passengers each. Looks like the Millenium Wheel in London will be beaten
Airtime&Gravity Posted December 20, 2006 Posted December 20, 2006 China continues to break the ferris wheel record every few months now. The record was broken several times this year, and there are a lot more on the drawing board. This new wheel looks nice though, and it should be popular when the Olympics start.
coasterdude5 Posted December 20, 2006 Posted December 20, 2006 This looks great! Haha, a ferris wheel that beats Kingda Ka! I bet it will make for some impressive photos.
CP_RULES Posted December 20, 2006 Posted December 20, 2006 That thing is going to have one hella view!
Shockwave Posted December 20, 2006 Posted December 20, 2006 Looks like the same design style as the London Eye with those pods going round the outside.
DenDen Posted December 20, 2006 Posted December 20, 2006 Actually, it's almost the exact design on the one that was supposed to be built in Las Vegas. First at GoldKey, then at Rio, then Westward Ho.... this thing is really getting passed on.
rollermonkey Posted December 20, 2006 Posted December 20, 2006 That's just rediculously huge. How long is the d@mn thing going to take to make a lap? Isn't the London Eye like an hour already?
the sound Posted December 20, 2006 Posted December 20, 2006 Yet another record Brakeing Ferris Wheel in the makeing. At least Melbourne is getting one!
DenDen Posted December 20, 2006 Posted December 20, 2006 I dunno, I think a 600 foot coaster would be a bigger draw. I'm sure one revolution on this baby will cost a ton-o-tourist-dollah! I'd rather pay to be scared half to death, than to be bored half to death.
Masked_Maverick Posted December 20, 2006 Posted December 20, 2006 Call me weird I have yet to ride a Roller Coaster that has terrified me but Ferris Wheels scare the crap out of me for some reason they always have. A 600 foot one would have me crapping my pants.
thomas2 Posted December 20, 2006 Author Posted December 20, 2006 That's just rediculously huge. How long is the d@mn thing going to take to make a lap? Isn't the London Eye like an hour already? Well according to the news article it should only take 20 min. for 1 lap
PCW FREAK Posted December 20, 2006 Posted December 20, 2006 ^Only 20 minutes? Thats ridiculously long for a ferris wheel. How fast are the gondola's moving?
fakestar Posted December 20, 2006 Posted December 20, 2006 I dunno, I think a 600 foot coaster would be a bigger draw. I'm sure one revolution on this baby will cost a ton-o-tourist-dollah! I'd rather pay to be scared half to death, than to be bored half to death. Speak for yourself. I'd be far more frightened to ride that than any coaster I've ever seen, save maybe Williams Grove Cyclone.
PCW FREAK Posted December 20, 2006 Posted December 20, 2006 ^that's saying alot. But I agree, I like coasters better cuz you get a nice thrill and then it's over. Where as ferris wheels expose you to height for extended periods of time therefore making them really freaky.
snuggles Posted December 20, 2006 Posted December 20, 2006 Just imagine an eli bridge ferris wheel that big, with the creepy rocking seats!
PCW FREAK Posted December 20, 2006 Posted December 20, 2006 ^That is the sort of thing i'd have nightmares about.LOL ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 80th POST!
martinb Posted December 20, 2006 Posted December 20, 2006 Wow, over 600ft, damn, that is tall, I could pretty much guarantee lots of sweaty palms on that ride!
rollermonkey Posted December 20, 2006 Posted December 20, 2006 ^Only 20 minutes? Thats ridiculously long for a ferris wheel. How fast are the gondola's moving? Hey, Wrebbit, thanks for the translation! 20 minutes isn't that bad. Some of the big ones in Japan were 30 minutes. A wheel that big will almost feel quick at that time. Anybody feel like figuring out the feet per second speed of a circle?
martinb Posted December 20, 2006 Posted December 20, 2006 ^The London Eye is about 30 mintues, and thats 200ft shorter.
RCoasterny Posted December 20, 2006 Posted December 20, 2006 Or worse- The wheel stops and the motors that keeps the pods level keeps going.
thomas2 Posted December 20, 2006 Author Posted December 20, 2006 Boarding this ferris wheel is also quite interesting: you have to enter some sort of cart, which then moves alongside the gondolas traveling at the same speed so the wheel never has to stop see the bottom right of the second picture for more detail on this.
pierced_b0i Posted December 21, 2006 Posted December 21, 2006 They should make some flip cages in that size and have it go fast. I think that would be fun!
TPDave Posted December 21, 2006 Posted December 21, 2006 The london eye does go incredibly slowly though. Maths lessons would tells me that this one will move at about 1.2m/h. Thats quite fast for a ferris wheel, shoudl be fun boarding
