You may have noticed a general increase of spam posts and threads recently. The TPR Forum's huge success means we're a bigger target for spammers who try to put links to their site on the boards. The TPR Admins and ASSistants do our best to delete these as fast as they appear. Unfortunately, just as we get better at detecting and deleting the posts, the stupid spammers try to be more "clever" and post spam messages as replies in existing threads.

That's where the Report Post button comes in. You'll see it in the top right corner of every post on the site. If you spot a thread or reply that qualifies as spam, hit the button, write a comment with the word "spam", and submit it. This will let the Admins and ASSistants know to delete the offending post. With your help, we can get to the posts quicker and keep TPR totally free of annoying spam messages!

Obviously, with this new feature comes the potential for abuse. This button is only to be used for reporting spam, so *ONLY USE IT TO REPORT SPAM*. In other words, DO NOT REPORT POSTS THAT ARE NOT CLEARLY SPAM!! If you report a post that is not spam, or abuse the feature in any way, we will give you a temporary ban for at least 24 hours.

The same old rules for spam still apply, so DO NOT reply in the thread to a spam message or you will be given a temporary ban.

Thanks for helping us get rid of stupid spammers and making the TPR forums one of the biggest and best theme park related forums out there!

There are several spam threads in the forums right now and I reported three of them some time ago, except not much seems to be happening.

Also, has anyone else had trouble with scrolling over to fill in a comment using Firefox?

I know you only want the button used for spam.

But do you mind of it's used to report an offensive post, or say a POV request posted in the wrong spot, etc?

My worry about telling everyone to use it for reporting offensive posts or other such issues would be that people can interpret what is "offensive" to mean what they want it to, and we could potentially be flooded with hundreds of emails a day.

The mods do a really good job already with catching these issues and it's the spam that's our biggest frustration at the moment.

So for now, while I appreciate wanting to help us keep the boards as clean as possible, let's just stick with reporting spam until we see how the report post feature works out.

Thanks!

Are you worried about getting thousands of reports once one of them shows up? I'm sure you'd rather get tons of reports than have someone reply to the spam. But, do you think you can find a way to control it? Maybe after so many views, you could tell people not to report it because it's more than likely already been reported.

Or am I just blowing smoke?

^ We'll see how it goes. Robb implemented this as a test run sort of thing, and if we don't like it, we can always get rid of it in the future. We haven't had a problem so far.

Luckily we seem to be really QUICK at deleting any of the spam threads. Most people don't even get a chance to see them!

This was just one additional layer of "insurance" in case the spammers are responding to threads instead of creating new ones (which has been happening lately)

Even with the report post button, I would assume that 90% of the spam will be deleted by the mods before anyone even has a chance to report it.

The button is just for the odd case that something has been posted that's not obvious.

And still, we want to make sure people are not abusing it.

I assume that applies only to new spam threads, not if they reply to an existing thread. Do we need to grind an existing discussion to a halt until an admin deletes the spam?

I think it would probably be okay to reply to a thread that a spammer posts to, as long as we ignore the spam post and contribute to the thread as if it wasn't there. As for "spam threads" (threads started by a spammer), they should not be posted to at all.

Posted

^ Exactly. If a spammer posts in an existing thread, you can still post in that thread, just don't post as a response TO the spam.

Is there a way to space apart the Report Post button? Trying to quote someone, I accidentally hit the report post...maybe it can be sitting somewhere off to the side by it's self? Not sure if anyone else has accidentally hit the report post instead of quote.

Posted

willmontu< oh i've been afraid to hit the wrong button accidentally

like you've wondered. accident's real awful here since we gonna get

banned for at least 24 hours.....

What if you accidently hit the Report button instead of the quote button. I've done that like 3 times. Sorry

If you hit the report button, it sends to you another page where you leave a comment and then submit it. So, just hitting Report does nothing.

Posted

Unless you accidently hit report, and accidently put your post in the report comment box, and accidently hit report.

But if you do that you deserve a temp ban.

I think I've seen 3 different advirtisement things today. I was wondering, are there any legal actions sites are allowed to take to prevent such things?

Guys,

If you use the report function, all you have to write in the comments box is "SPAM". You do NOT need to fill out a detailed explanation of why it's SPAM, or who should get banned, etc. That's for us to decide.

So just put in "SPAM".

Thanks.
