TDLFAN reviews TDS' Tower of Terror w/ photos & Spoilers

Recommended Posts

Wow, I really like all the show effects you explained. Sounds like a Disney quality ride. One thing I saw in your pictures that amazed me, is the green lighting at night. You see it not only on the top, but it goes to the different chambers from the top. Pretty awesome dude!

Walt Disney Studios Park, in Paris I believe. I don't think it's tower is open yet (I just found a trace of info from trusty ol' Google!)

I'd like to know what Mr. Alvey thinks of the Towers he's been on, being the jaded globetrotter that he is!

I've only been on MGM's and DCA. And while I like both, MGM's is the FAR superior ride in my opinion.

It doesnt even look haunted....

Haunted is NOT the right way to describe it. The story involves a diabolic relic that is supposed to be "possessed" and comes to life to get rid of those he comes in contact with... reason why Mr. Hightower is dead and his demise remains a mystery. This is not really a haunted house per se...

Also, while part of the whole experience is the free fall ride in a similar format to the DCA TOT setup, the preshow is more than just a TV video. Guests are supposed to be a part of the Preservation Society's Tour of Hightower Hotel to discover the many artifacts Mr. Hightower collected thru his many travels around the World and stored here in the hotel's storage room. You (as a guest) are escorted thru the first two rooms of the Tower after visiting the main Lobby, for a guided tour that explains the strange disappearance of Mr. Hightower after returning from Africa with a "supposedly" demonic statue..called Shiriki Utundu. All this is expplained by the (real live) guide tour CM accompanying the group of guests.

Hope that helps explain the concept behind this unique TOT experience.

I'm trying to find a review of some sort of the WDSP version. Any suggestions? And is this version generally regarded as the best one?

I've been on the Disney/ MGM version and I've seen that one referred to as the "good" tower, so I'm interested in knowing the differences in them all.

The TOT in Walt Disney Studios Paris is still under construction and should be opening around April 2007, in time for DLP's 15th anniversary, even though it is located in the Studios and not the Disneyland Parc.

Great review! Also, the ride itself is really great! I love the Tiki Idol and the window effects! And I still don't have any idea where the idol goes to.

Any idea what kind of technology they use to the idol? Is it a hologram?

I'm guessing it either "falls" down into the pedestal, or the wall turns around very fast when you can't see. I can't imagine it being that complex.

Do these elevators shake like the ones in DCA?

Looks awesome! I like that they didn't theme this one to the Hollywood Tower hotel (and Twilight Zone also).

The only part of the ride that I didn't think was very well done was the architecture. It looks fantastic, but there is this one over hang that makes the building get wider as it gets taller. It just looks excessive and really stupid. Other than that, I really like the theme and general idea of the ride.

That ride is the most amazing building I've seen. You look at and say "THAT'S A RIDE". Disney spares no expense when it comes to all the details. It could be the most boring drop ride in history and it would still be one of the best just because it of it looking so cool.

I would not call it a "tiki" Idol... It's not of polynesian culture but african. You have to read the newspaper clips in the queue to understand the Doll is african, and possibly possesed by the spirit of a cannibal of sorts.

Also.. I am not sure still how the dissappearance trick goes... but I believe the idol drops into the pedestal. However, walk up to it and take a close look. You can see THRU the pedestal's legs. Also, this is not a projected hologram. The Shiriki is sitting there in the "flesh". Also, there is NO revolving wall trick because for one.. Shiriki id NOT attatched to the wall but sitting on the pedestal, which itself sits ON TOP OF Mr. Hightower's old desk in the middle of the set. Shiriki itself has a glow achieved by soft black lighting, and when the room's mood starts to change, Shiriki's facial expression (mouth and eyes) change to a siniter look. Even the skelleton charm hanging around his neck changes! It's freaking AWESOME to see. When the lights go out.. both the wall area behind him and Shiriki itself sparkle in fiber optic lights, and in a FLASH! He is gone.

I think he drops. Of course... if the CMs weren't so effective in making sure all guests put away photographic equipment before the "tour" starts.. maybe someone could catch this with night-vision setting on a camcoder, but the CM will not allow you to even have your camera on.

PHOTOS FROM TOT's OPENING DAY's MORNING ARE HERE!!!

...If you build it, they will come...

or so it goes, even if that doesn't apply to DLP or HKDL.. but who cares? When lunacy and quality combine, there is bound to be combustion. So was the case the morning of Sept 4th 2006, when OLC officially opened TOT to the World.

Check out these photos and experience what it was like to go thru the queue as the entire population of Tokyo was trying to do the same. Explore the details and other surprises most guests won't get to see on a regular (slow) day at TDS' TOT. Read captions and you may learn a thing or two, or not.
