Efteling Discussion Thread
Jon Sabo replied to Pepper's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Screamscape also confirms that the ride will not open until 07 due to technical issues. Here is a link (also including some INCREDIBLE pictures). http://www.screamscape.com/html/efteling.htm I will dare to say it now and perhaps spark a debate (lol), but I honestly think the theming on this ride is better than a Disney or Busch ride-bar none! I worked for BEC parks for many years and love the theming at BGE, but this ride at Efteling is absolutely a visual orgasm...hehehe I hope they work out the issues (and not tame down the ride). Great links-video and pics to those who posted them!!! *One thing that could point out is what kind of weather is it there now (during testing). If it is cold there (still) that will surely have an effect on the train performance. I remember working on DF @ BGE we certainly had our issues during testing and even installed "heaters" along selected sections of the track to heat up the wheels/oil lubricators. Perhaps the park may do the same thing or just work on the technical issues they have and test again when its warmer. Another idea they could try is just add pure gear-oil (lite-grade) and that may make a difference. Heavier gear oil or even transmission fluid could be used in the warmer-weather events. -
Historic Zippin Pippin sells for $2,500

It is always unfortunate to see a rollercoaster get the ax. Hopefully someone will have the funds and land to rebuild the classic ride. -
TPR breaks another Intamin Rocket?
Jon Sabo replied to WillMontu's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Quite possibly caused by someone eating Donkey-flavored Lentil Soup..lol It certainly is unfortunate, but I'm sure the park will get the technical issues resolved (and would venture to say that the ride will be open by August). -

Do we get to build a bonfire (perhaps in a 6 Flags $15 parking lot..lol) and sing Kumbaya? Also, if food is served at the singing congregation what is on the menu? Choices? 1. Donkey stew with rodents and cornbread 2. Waffles, Belgian-style, with vanilla-bean ice cream and chocolate-covered rodents 3. McDonalds Happy meals with Vegan appetizers? 4. Poi (a Hawaiian thing..lol) 5. "Homemaid" meatloaf 6. Lentil soup with garlic croutons 7. Southern-fried steak with grits and baked apples-n-cinnamon 8. Chinese? (how the heck they get ALL of that food into those tiny boxes?) 9. Hire a professional chef/caterer 10. Freeze-dried food entre -
You should have asked the maintenance department if you could get ERT's on the Oblivion as in that pic you posted. That sure would have been a great ride..lol Nice pics....it rained only one day there?

Best (and worst) "Sounds" on a coaster
Jon Sabo replied to Jon Sabo's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I just got to laugh at the term "Intamin Fart". I still love working maintenance on the steel beasts and the sound is almost like music to my ears. I might need psychological help..lol B&M roar rules! (aka Kumba's flatulence). -

To be rather blunt? This idea is MUCH better than that irritating thread on CP new project for 07..lol At least on this thread, you can get actual IDEAS (ooh, there is a new term) rather than posts that go back and forth for 75+ pages re-hashing the same thing over and over and over and ove .....a...n...d...ov.... Oh well..lol -
I do not see any photo's as well.

We are currently working on changing that for Hawaii (and take that name off the list). We hope to have something within the next 10 months or so to reveal. But, in the meantime, we do have a pretty nice waterpark (Hawiian Waters Adventure Park-in Kopolei). -

I thought they already had children. All of them adopted from the farm of rodents of the TPR club. "Veggie-Friendly" of course..lol -
Another death from a carnival ride?
Jon Sabo replied to Jon Sabo's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Are "we" missing the point here or is there another part of the story that hasn't been reported yet? That interview just disturbs me to no end. Any other parents here (with kids around that age) feel the same way? There was no way the mother had much remorse over loosing her son. Two reasons- 1. If she was in shock, her actions sure would have been more of a 'panic' mode. She appears 'way to calm' to experience something like this (almost exactly the same mannerisms like the woman who drowned her kids in a car in NC a few years ago). I'm not trying to sound callous here about the event, but something just does not fit (mothers reaction). Any parents here would act the way she did? I seriously doubt it (we would be in tears and have more 'emotion' in our statements). I just not getting it-her story appears strange (even if she witnessed the event! 2. She barely had a tear in her eye(s). And I think she knows she had done something wrong to cause the death of her son (for whatever reason). Her actions do NOT even match the significance of the event (regardless of a 'shock' factor or not). Did she lack some common sense in her actions or did she honestly placed faith in the ride/fair operators (that her son was safe for the ride)? When I originally posted this news, I was trying to gauge on what the mother was feeling and for some odd reason there was NO emotion in her statements/actions. Can someone counter these comments and enlighten me? I mean, I have watched the video over 15 times and nothing appears right. I see another lawsuit coming for the fair operators (last accident I believed that happened for them was around 1996 or 99). **On that note, I pray for the child and it is very sad and unfortunate, but hopefully something positive comes out of this. -
Worst Arrow coaster
Jon Sabo replied to CP_fan_boy's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I would put a vote in for: 1. Orient Express-I can see why the park got ride of it. Maintenance costs on the ride increased by 16% in the last 3 yrs of operation and began to have axle failures. Nessie now holds the claim to the world's only interlocking loops...wheeee..lol 2. Demon (tie). Part of it is (lack of) maintenance, but that ride is a complete headache. ***New Sponsorship deal with Tylenol of Goody's headache power should add to the ride capacity..lol -

I wish to add to my original post in that: 1. Drachen Fire-station brakes. Ohhh so sweet. Even working maintenance on the thing, I never got tired of that sound (or am I deaf now?..lol) 2. Love the Arrow-style rollbacks (especially on Nessie-before the yr-2001 changes). -

B&M vs Intamin
Jon Sabo replied to alpengeistdude321's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I forgot all about this debate, until someone made a recent post..lol To comment even further on the Arrow coaster. Ron Toomer had stated in an interview a few years ago and they (Arrow) were in fact trying to develop a suspended coaster to perform an inversion (even explore it on BBW!!). But Arrow just couldn't engineer it to what they had hoped (especially the way the inertia kept dropping off as a suspended coach/train would perform the inversion; to bad they couldn't figure how to make the chassis more rigid and perhaps still incorporate the 'swinging' motion). From this (according to some analysts), Arrow began its development into their "Pipeline" coaster. Most here will say that was completely different and it IS, but the general premise behind the idea of Pipeline was to create a new carrier system that would eventually help get away from their current (at the time) bogey system and develop a new one to help a suspended coaster perform an inversion(s). Dal Freemen (now at Lagoon park in Utah-I believe) had a group of engineers examining new metal-materials and tried to design new bogey systems to alleviate some of the "roughness" on typical Arrow rides. Ok, that ends that talk. I actually prefer BOTH mfg. Intamin creativity and B&M precision and ability to harness the heartline design. I also would add that poster-member "REAL" is dead on regarding Intamin's safety record. **Page 3 post: http://www.themeparkreview.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=815&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=20 Intamin had nothing to do with those incidents and in fact was the first on the scene to help the park(s) to incorporate modifications to the related rides. Another note to back up most people's observations here, look at the Mission Statements from both companies: Intamin: http://www.intaminworldwide.com/i_who.htm B&M: http://www.bolliger-mabillard.com/company/company_en.aspx -
Awesome pics! 1. Looks quite hot there eh? 2. WTF is up with that cat? 3. Are we foregoing the 'boob' credits now and accumulating "ball(s)" for credits now?..lol 4. On the CF website, I noticed the pic of SV and JS guitars! Those guys ROCK! I had them both on my MP3 player on my trip to VA/BGE.

^^^BG-Europe's former names (BG-Williamsburg & BG-Old Country). BG-Africa's former names (BG-Tampa & BG-Dark Continent). Classes will be offered each time BG changes their park names in the future..lol Don't worry, some people still believe BGE is actually a new park in Europe and others still think BG parks go by the original names "Old Country & Dark Continent". Go figure. I was always wondering the names changes when I worked for the parks and the names on the checks kept changing over the years...lol

Speaking from a maintenance point-of-view, I always loved the 'sound' of a rollercoaster(s). From the air-pressure sounds of the braking systems (especially Arrow-caliper brake systems) to the sounds of the rollback dogs, sounds are important in detecting any issues a the ride. What are your favorite AND least favorite "sounds" on a coaster (wood or steel). Example of Mine: Favorite: The Big Dipper at SCBB. It may have changed in recent years, but the sound of the rollbacks had a distinctive sound like the Rhumba or a band playing the steel drums. Also, I love the way most of the wooden coasters in PKD sound (especially Grizzly) and the "roar" of Kumba (BGA). Worst: the irritating wheel noises coming from Anaconda (PKD). Not only did the high-pitch sound give me a headache, but I noticed that the oil filler for the (3!) wheels on the train were EMPTY...nice maintenance PKD..lol

Another death from a carnival ride?
Jon Sabo replied to Jon Sabo's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Good points on both posts. America (in general) seems so obsessed with lawsuits these days it almost is to the point to what mental-state our society is becoming. When are we going to take responsibility for our own actions? It is becoming a blame game now and a lawyers feeding frenzy. Greed? hmmm! Grant it, operators can/are at fault on occasions also, but the media portrays/favors the compassion of the guest/public on about 95+% of the time. That pic sure represents a double-standard in what a kid may take that signage, but (he) may have lacked some commen sense or something really scared him. **Recent news on the Disney front: "Disney being sued over death of their 6 yr old death on MS" **Tomorrows news: "Mother of 6 yr old sues fair over boys death on ferris wheel". *Note: If you note on that video, watch the mothers reaction toward her sons death. There wasn't much emotion on her expression/actions after she lost her son. For crying out loud, where is her compassion? I would love to shake her around and slap her to see if she actually knows what has happened. More still, the report stated that she WITNESSED her sons death! -

Bring back Teri Hatcher (now with D-H show). She used to play Lois Lane on the Superman television series (with Dean Caine? I believe). She is STILL HOT after all of these years. -
New England Area Fairs

OMG. I remember the Danbury fair when I was a kid. I lived near Clinton for many years and remember going to that fair was a 'big thing' back in the days. I remember getting lost their one year as a kid and the lost & found provided me with alot of food/drinks until I was reunited with my parents. I wonder what changes the fair has gone through over the years. But, wow, that brings back some memories..lol
