Any thoughts on what 2021 will look like!?
Jew replied to ricklap77's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Don’t expect much. It’s just not possible for parks to return to business as normal after years of record profits for the industry were instantly wiped out. Even if things are “safe” again, parks will be conservative to try and recapture the millions lost (or billions in the case of Disney and universal) this year. -
Thoughts after watching the documentary: 1. Did they invent the mat racing and drop tower water slides? 2. That is gross negligence defined. The argument that “you need to take personal responsibility” while turning a blind eye to guests you know full well are not taking personal responsibility is something I am very glad is not part of the industry anymore.

Technically the park is open under the guidelines for outdoor dining as if it was a giant restaurant. The state hasn’t released guidelines for theme parks yet. I suppose the argument is that rides and queue lines are higher touch points where people will be in close proximity longer amounts of time but I suspect at this point the real reason is that it would be a bad look politically to open theme parks While bars and indoor dining are still banned. Knotts deserves kudos for quickly adjusting to generate revenue and get some employees back to work and setting a foundation for any other park that wishes to open right now.

I wouldn’t really call it a huge development, but happy they will be able to offer something (outdoor exhibits only). All of our parks have been closed for over 5 months. It’s big news even if it is no rides! Knotts was much bigger news finding an innovative way to operate. Other zoos were already open including SFDK up north! Going to go out on a limb and say that won’t be happening.

RMC was selling a coaster at a discount at IAAPA because someone backed out. The speculation on this forum was that random water park bought it (the name escapes me at the moment). Most contracts have some sort of “force majeure” Clause in them that COVID-19 may invoke, so it’s entirely possible this coaster is delayed or canceled despite being under fabrication.

Just read they shut down bars and restaurants again because of that ONE person. Cannot agree more with what you posted. If we could all just be responsible and follow the reasonable guidelines of masks and doing our best to stay socially distant, we can control the spread amongst asymptomatic people and then this can truly be “like the flu.”

A note for haunt fans out there: Looks like the operator of Queen Mary in Long Beach and the Holiday Inn in Orlando (Urban Commons) that host Dark Harbor and Dark Horizons may not survive this. They suspended operations at Queen Mary, but reportedly laid off staff completely instead of furloughing them. When googling it, looks like their “house of cards” of financing collapsed. They defaulted on their loans in an agreement that sounded sketchy to begin with (it’s an investment firm traded on the Singapore stock exchange that borrowed money from Wells Fargo for its cash...and they are also in default on that.). Eagle trust is the company if you want to google more.

I get that you're probably joking, but nobody's getting fired for 'conflicting dates'. This is an unprecedented situation, everybody gets that, nobody with any sense is (or should be) thinking any dates they find mean anything until we get some official announcements. My home park is SFGAm. Between the app and the website, there are a bunch of May and June dates out there that are absolutely not happening. We're in the middle of a pandemic, I'm ok with a website that has some wrong dates. This. There are so many moving parts, I imagine it’s impossible right now for any of the parks to nail down an exact date when dealing with ever changing federal, state, and local guidelines. My guess is the dates are currently listed in the app because they are working on changing their ticketing system to reservations and the software has to have a “start date” to function. Disneyland just moved hotel reservations from June 1 as the earliest date to July 1. It’s a situation changing by the day in every business.

Re-opening the economy successfully is going to take another round of massive federal assistance. Restaurants and bars won’t be making profits if at reduced capacity, there will still be people afraid to travel (warren buffet sold all his positions in airlines....roughly 10% of delta, United, Southwest, and American because he doesn’t see a recovery anytime soon), the deferred payments will come due, over leveraged Airbnb hosts who took out mortgages dependent upon revenue from Airbnb will be foreclosing, commercial office space will surely go down since so many are working from home successfully, the list goes on and on.... We need to prepare for vastly different theme park operations the next few years. Aside from the safety precautions, parks are going to have to look very hard at their pricing and costs to ride out this downturn.
