In the meantime, it's a pretty rotten deal for all the people who lost their existing jobs, and the ones who would have had jobs at the new hotel under the original construction schedule. I'm sure they won't be sending the Mayor or the City Council any thank you notes. Disney is paying $52 billion for FOX. They can afford to miss out on $13mil/year in tax credit when the hotel was sure to charge at least $400/night and generate $100mil+ in revenue per year. The hotel wasn't even set to go to the planning commission for final approval until August 20th, so all this really amounts to is political theater. New city council members who weren't even on the council when the deal was approved found a loophole and did what they were elected to do in using that to operate in the best interests of the city. Disney fought back to try and make them look bad by announcing they are putting it on hold. Nobody ultimately wins, but I suspect the city is going to get a better deal giving less back to Disney than the original 70%. Disney desperately needs the hotel capacity, so I don't believe they will actually delay this.

Or, conversely, Disney can go forward with the hotel on their own without the tax break. Pretty sure they can afford it and would easily recoup the lost tax rebate... The contract is technically void because of the different address of the hotel. Since the deal was first approved, the political climate changed in Anaheim. City found a loophole and will likely turn that into a better deal for the city.

Just quoting this again and emphasizing the first part. But getting the thread back on topic...Cedar Fair (and everyone else) use international labor because it is cheaper than raising wages to supplement their workforce. In the case of Cedar Point, I imagine they can only find so many people who want to live in crappy dorms to work long hours for entry level pay.

As with anything, the phrase "your mileage may vary" applies to theme park and entry level jobs. I know plenty of people who got into the field of their choice through their job at a theme park. The fields vary from everything to staying in the theme park business in management, creative roles, HR roles, finance roles, sales roles, entertainment.... Even using the marine biology example. Working as a ticket seller at an aquarium could get you the foot in the door for when you finish your degree.

Not to let this thread get political, but you touched on something that impacts the entire industry: disposable income. Wages might be up 2%, but if the cost of all the goods you need also increase in price at a rate higher or equal to that (FYI: the CPI is up 2.9% in the last 12 months)..that's less actual money you have to spend on stuff like theme parks. Now back to the normal discussion... Knott's payment plan is 6 payments. I'm thrilled I can soon spread that out over 12 months now!

To be fair to the park, there are a couple of important things to note: 1. Has it even been confirmed that there is a lawsuit? 2. Magic Mountain can't just do whatever they want to a ride. It had the approval of Intamin and the state of CA to open. You can armchair engineer all you want, but actual engineers approved it to open. 3. Magic Mountain may not have the best reputation, but I can say with confidence not even they would be grossly negligent in operating a ride.

Cedar Point (CP) Discussion Thread

That's a cop out. The sign is clearly implying "keep your phone outside or else..." People are stupid. Doesn't mean the park can't find reasonable solutions to counteract that. That may be, but you'll also find that exact language regarding Ohio Revised Code on every single CP, KI, CPS ride safety signage at ride entrances. It's on a small board at the bottom. It's added to this sign to reinforce that it is a misdemeanor to not follow it. It is also I believe printed in the park map for rider safety information. It's there. Has always been there and will always be there. This sign is because humans will ignore every other sign and piece of literature that stats that code. https://cdn-cloudfront.cfauthx.com/binaries/content/assets/cp-en-us/general-information/explore/2018-park-map.jpg You can check the park map yourself. It's right below the main entrance. There is a huge difference between burying it in fine print and putting it front and center on a sign. It's extremely tacky. -

Lotte World Adding 3 New Attractions For....2016!
Jew replied to Garet's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
As long as the ride still is fun. Honestly, I think we'll see parks remove water elements more and more from attractions as over the years we've learned that water doesn't mix well with amusement park rides, especially rides that aren't "water rides." Even though Elissa getting soaked by the kid reaching his arm out was hilarious, I definitely agree with this sentiment. Traditional ride elements and water don't mix well---it either needs to be a 100% designed for water ride (like a flume or raft) or no water. -

That is the craziest theme park sign I have ever seen---telling people have their phone in a queue line is a crime. In 2018. -

If you are driving from So Cal, I would just get a hotel by CGA since you will have to drive back that direction anyways. -

I would not expect that to happen. NFL rights fees for video are exorbitant and the NFL is extremely protective of their intellectual property. Along those same lines I would not be surprised if the officially recognized Steelers logo never makes it into the Steeler Country area. It says right in the press release on the Steelers' website that there will be "scores and highlights on Steelers Country’s giant video screen." The full logo is used in almost every concept picture, as well as the script logo, which is trademarked just the same. To Larry's point, the NFL's strict control over the broadcast rights are probably why it is just highlights and scores and not live broadcasts. We'll have to wait and see I guess. Since most seasonal parks are closed the majority of the NFL season, the only example I can think of are cruise ships broadcasting live NFL games over their deck big screens, which happens all the time. Kennywood does broadcast Penguins playoff games live over park speakers and on the stage screen by Potato Patch. And Cedar Point also used to play Indians games on that former giant screen by MF. Two different sports, but still live games. Either way, any games wouldn't start until mid-August, and it'll be a hit with yinzers regardless. Cruise ships pay for the right to do that. They purchase the satellite feeds of select games (which are sometimes much more interesting when they are the raw satellite feed without commercials, so you hear the announcers chatter that is usually off air) and are charged based on the audience size. Bars and restaurants are also charged at commercial rates for sports channels based on the amount of people expected to watch. Not sure what current prices are, but In 2015, a venue with a max capacity of 50 people would pay $1,458 for NFL sunday ticket and 10,000+ people was $120,000. The NFL takes its media rights VERY seriously (it's the main profit center of their business)---teams cannot even post highlights to their own social media until AFTER a game. -

On almost rides with lapbars, parks can just put an elastic strap pouch to store loose articles. Almost any coaster train has room for something similar if they REALLY wanted to, whether it's somewhere on the car itself or attached to the lap bar (save for T-style bars). In 2018 asking someone to be without their phone for so long AND also charging them for the locker to store it is kind of ridiculous. -
