Bay Beach Amusement Park Discussion Thread
JT325 replied to uwgbdork's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Going to park for the first time in a couple years tomorrow, very excited. Looks like they are doing "Boo Beach" for Halloween. This park is so underrated. The coaster is tops, too. -
Silver Dollar City (SDC) Discussion Thread

^Thank you. Very important note about the new coaster, I would have missed that. Maybe I'll stay for Sunday, I like taking my time in good parks. Only caveat is driving home alone as my friend has to leave on Saturday (and driving there alone as well). No biggie, I'm sure it's worth it. -

^Thanks for your input. That sounds great! Is the whole park doable on a Saturday? I like lots of re-rides on coasters but I like to do everything else as well... -

I’m going to SDC for the first time ever (!!) on November 10th for a regional ACE event called Coaster Christmas. With the package, they give us fast passes for the rides. My question is, how long will the lines be with the fast passes? I know at some places, even with the fast pass lines can be long for certain popular coasters. I am trying to determine if I should stay for Sunday as well. -

Kings Island (KI) Discussion Thread
JT325 replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Very funny, I never heard that turn called that. We used to call it the curve from hell. When the ride was new, the rumor was it was supposed to wrap around to the other side of the lift thus making it a bit wider. In fact, I think several things were re-arranged before construction started. That ride was such a big deal! In 1987 (my first time to the park, my god the Beast was fast back then), the line for Vortex went the entire length of Coney Mall, then around the corner past King Kobra. Screamin' Demon was still way back there, too. They had Vortex logo's painted all along that path to direct the queue; The Beast also had Beast logos spilling outside of it's queue (which was like... 3 separate queue structures). The Vortex line was super huge, but went very fast: no more than 45 minutes at it's longest. This was a time when visual restraint checks were enough; people used common sense. I love that "wild mouse" turn. After learning how to ride/brace for it, it's quite fun. I still have these super cheezy 1987 Vortex wrap-around foil shades. If I could only find them! Good memories. -

What do you guys think about Invertigo leaving? How about Adventure Express? I'd be bummed about AE, it's my favorite coaster at KI. -

^Heck yeah! Positive attitude and persistence pays off. Thank you for your big part in saving and getting the San Diego Giant Dipper back open. It sat there, completely dilapidated and now look at it! Good work. -

I think they would have a big “going away” for Vortex. It’s not fun to me anymore, but I have great memories from the year it opened. It was the first six loop coaster, and a big deal at the time. Good memories. Firehawk is fun -
Chicago's Riverview Park
JT325 replied to Nate's topic in Roller Coaster Games, Models, and Other Randomness
^MOST excellent suggestion! I spent half of the 80s as a kid coaster geek with my nose buried in that book (and Roller Coaster Fever!). I go past the old Riverview site all the time; what a sad situation to have lost a great park. The first coaster/park related event I ever went to was a Riverview show put on by Chuck Wlodarczyk around 1986. In addition to all the Riverview stuff, he had incredible pictures he took of almost every other park and coaster. The color 8x10s of Texas Cyclone from 1978... I'll never get rid of those. Looks like there are good/used copies of the book on Amazon for very cheap: https://www.amazon.com/Riverview-Gone-Forgotten-1904-1967/dp/0911694072 I definitely need a new(er) copy. Mine was worn out by the end of the 80s. ^^Your park is looking nice! Keep up the good work. An older friend of mine once told me, while looking at a green-decked parch: "that reminds me of Riverview." I asked why. He said "they had a lot of sh*t that color." I love green in parks. Green and white go well. -
^Love the socks. I would totally wear those to work (trendy grocery store).

^Looking good! Especially at night. Planet Coaster is almost TOO awesome, isn't it?! It's crazy how much time I can spend on it. -

Love the side-friction coaster. And in real life, I love Leap-the-Dips. I'll take sitting on a padded bench unencumbered by annoying restraints and a tight seat... anyday over a ragdolling RMC. It's good to have both, but the classic stuff is just so rare and endangered. -
Just rode Coney Island Cyclone...
JT325 replied to toughmudder's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
So happy to hear you loved the ride! I used to go to NY almost every year and subway it over to Coney for some rides on Cyclone. For years, it was my #1. They (GCI) took the "snaps" out of the first and second drop, most notably... but the trade off is that it's also smoother and faster now. And more people like it. As much as I miss those snapping drops... well, can't have everything our way I guess. I never minded the bumpy ride, but most people prefer it more the way it is now. Notice how every turn gets a little faster? Genius. That sort of varied pacing is lost on many of today's coasters. On Cyclone, you get to see the drops coming; you have a couple seconds to take it all in. It really is a masterpiece of a ride, being duplicated so many times. Can't wait to get back. Now if they could rebuild the Tornado! I have a friend who rode it in the 70s. He said out of the 3 coasters (Tornado, Thunderbolt and Cyclone) Tornado was his favorite. Had a nice winding tunnel before the lift. -
The Ytterbium Analysis
JT325 replied to ytterbiumanalyst's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
^Gawd that plate looks so good! Do I not see a layer of onions under the cheese? I'll have to check out Gold Star when I'm there next, I was always nuts about Skyline. Which reminds me of when people think of Chicago (my home): "Oh, you have to go to Lou Malnati's." It's so tired to people who live here; there are a thousand local, mom & pop places that are better than Lou's... closer and cheaper too. It's just such a touristy/yuppie thing to do for many of us Chicagoans. You wouldn't catch us at a Lou Malnati's when we have better across the street. So that's always my stance... meanwhile, when I think of KI and Cinci, I'm all "oh yeah! Skyline Chili!" Doing the same thing I complain about, but the tables are turned. haha. -
Carowinds 2018 Planet Coaster
JT325 replied to carowindsman's topic in Roller Coaster Games, Models, and Other Randomness
^You can continue with what you have... eventually adding paths/large paved areas, and see how that looks. -OR- You can spend some time (a long time!) studying overhead maps (google, etc.) of the park and map out the place. Find the approximate distances and angles between stuff and go from there. Draw it all out on paper, then go into a fresh game and start over. It can be a lot of work, but if you want it to be closer to the park, it's possible. This is how I used to figure out coaster angles in the 80s, when I was building model coasters. I spent a lot of time studying drawings, figuring out not only angles but radius'; both radius of layout and radius of curvature on the profile. This is how I was able to get drawings/models to look close to the real thing. Distances between ribbon boards on wooden coasters - good memories! Long before anyone had a computer; now, you have the world at your fingertips if you want pictures and information on parks and coasters. It all comes down to how much time you want to spend. I did this America Eagle on No limits around 2009. It took me a month of work to get it close enough; I can clearly see flaws, but got it "to my satisfaction." The same can be done with a whole park. (Geesh, what cruddy resolution! This video clip isn't even complete, but enough is there to see the work put in.) -
The Model Cyclone Racer

Looking excellent! Your models are impressive! That geometry drawing takes me back the 80s... looking at roller coaster pictures and magazines/books with a protractor, figuring out angles and super-geeky stuff. -
Cedar Point (CP) Discussion Thread
JT325 replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Sounds wonderful ... but unlucky for a few. This TOTALLY takes me back to working at the Point in the early 90s and living at the Cedars dorm. My first year (91) our room was the last in the hallway "across the street" (Perimeter Road) from Wildcat (loved that ride). On adjoining hallways, there are these awesome old-fashioned breezeways which were FILLED WITH HUGE SPIDERS constantly. One of these breezeways was just outside our room. It seemed the custodial staff would routinely spray the entire breezeway (ceiling and all) with high-powered water hoses to get all the spiders/webs/muffle heads out. Never lasted long. Spiders: terrifying, thrilling and cool. There were so many at the point, HUGE ones too. There were residents that would do their best to avoid walking through there: "keep your eyes forward, don't look around or up!" Being on the lake, the spiders such a rich food source with all the bugs. -
Raising water level in Planet Coaster
JT325 replied to JT325's topic in Roller Coaster Games, Models, and Other Randomness
^To answer my own question, no you cannot edit the water level outside the park. I found that on another forum and wanted to post it here in case anyone else needed an answer to that. Sucks you can't edit the water level outside the park, but dang does this game rock. -
Holiday World (HW) Discussion Thread
JT325 replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
^You said it! If those coasters were at any other park, could you imagine the number of trim brakes they would have? We went through this in the early 90s with (what were the best coasters I ever rode) Timberwolf, Georgia Cyclone and Texas Giant. Those were incredible, but their respective parks immediately threw on trim brakes, and then cut way back in maintenance after they found out what type of rides they had. Then we had 3 once top coasters that were trimmed AND track-rough. I've had rough rides on all 3 at Holiday World, but most of the times I've been they are running better than 90% of the wood coasters I've been on. Sure they get a little rough here and there but their maintenance is tops, especially for what those coasters do. (insert something snarky about B&M/GCI/RMC raising a generation of wimpy coaster fans...) Legend is still my favorite. A younger coaster buddy of mine was all "they forgot the bank the helix on that," and I'm all "that's what makes it so good!" Those woodies aren't for everyone, but the stations stay full until midnight every Holiwood Nights. -
Still kind of new to Planet Coaster here. I have a park I've been working on; it was my own scenario. There is water around the perimeter of the park, but it's about 100 feet below the main height of the park itself. I would like to bring it up about 90 feet so I can have a beach (I already have my version of Magnum XL-200 ready!). In scenario editor, I cannot find an option to raise water level. Is this possible?
