What is your next park?
LuminousAphid replied to onewheeled999's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
All my jealousy belong to you I will be at Silverwood in ID this coming week, will probably be there 2 days, a combination of either Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday Anyone who will be there PM me so we can meet up! I haven't met anyone from the forum yet, and the people I'm going with aren't huge thrill ride fans so it would be cool to have someone to ride with -
Worst Coaster Ever?
LuminousAphid replied to Mind Eraser's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
wat The old Arrow looper Wild Thing at our local park is the worst I have been on; it's similar to corkscrew except it has a neck-straining loop after the first drop instead of just a turn-around. It also got stuck in the station with restraints down last time I rode it, and the engineer came and hammered on things, it was just like roller coaster tycoon! *doodoodoot* Wild Thing has broken down edit; for content -
Crazy Chinese Water Canon Slide.
LuminousAphid replied to Gutterflower's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I can't tell if it would be fun or just disorienting. It seems like you'd have water all up in your face and not be able to see anything. Also, when the lady sat down on that textured plate for launch I immediately feared for her butt, but I guess the water probably lifts you up a bit so you don't scrape along it. For the next design, they should find a way to make a more laminar flow so that water doesn't spray EVERYWHERE at launch. I would try it. -

Well there's your problem. I know not everyone can have weekdays off, but I'm sure you get much more bang for your buck when it's not the last month before kids go back to school. I feel like that should be a general rule for enthusiasts: if you want to enjoy yourself, go during the week or off-peak season. I'm going this week, and it looks like possible thunder showers- hoping that means less people and more rides for me! However I do agree, one-train ops are getting old, but at the same time I understand why they don't run extras; for every extra train it's 2x cost, 2x maintenance, 2x wear on the track. And like you said, there isn't another park within 5 hours (anything good within ~10 hours), so they don't have to worry about guests jumping ship to the next park. I just hope the money they save running 1 train gets re-invested in something awesome in the upcoming years. RMC please help us! -

Here's another photo trip report from another website (not mine) http://www.rollercoasteralley.com/news07.22.15_Page1.php The last picture is the best! Also, something i just saw while on their site: Pretty good thing to be aware of, and generous IMO. Also: Good times! -

Wha? Awesome! I did not know this. Is this new for 2015 or have they always done that for Scarywood? -
Robb (or anyone else), as far as you know has anyone ever taken an animal on a roller coaster? Dog, cat, snake...? Brazilian tour groups don't count (all I could find with a google search was Expedition Everest videos because "Animal" Kingdom)

Luckily my first ever drop tower (sort of?) was Big Shot, so I don't think anything else will phase me after that experience. It was terrifying and absolutely awesome at the same time. I cried a little. That would be my advice then, I suppose; go to Vegas and ride that, then you will become fearless! edit; forgot to mention it was at night, which was fabulous

SIlverwood only runs one train on both Tremors and Timber Terror, so I'm sure that helps reduce wear and tear by quite a bit compared to 2-train operations. They also have RMC down the road who I believe helps with some re-tracking work on both coasters. I'm excited to go, only about a month left till I get to ride them again! These two are the only CCI's I have ridden, and I wish I would have been more appreciative of coasters back when I rode them the first time as a teenager. It's sad to me that I don't remember much about either except THOSE TUNNELS! My god they are good, by the third and fourth ones you can't help but duck they are so small. I don't have much to compare them to, but I remember they were extremely fun- my Mom and Dad went on them multiple times while we were doing other rides, so Mom has more credits on Timber Terror than I do, haha!

http://nerdist.com/middle-earth-theme-park-the-shire-announced-as-coming-to-spain/ I somehow missed this annoucement, and at first I was excited to see what's going to happen with this. I am not a die-hard Tolkien fan or anything, but I have always liked the books ever since I read The Hobbit in elementary (or "primary") school, and I felt like this could be really awesome... Reading further though, it could also turn into an absolute disaster, and with a $2 million budget, I don't see it being anything worth travelling to Europe for. How are they going to do anything but make a nice walking garden for $2 million? I don't even think you could get plans and permits for a 20-acre park here in the U.S. for $2 million (okay maybe a private co. could, but that's not a lot of cash these days) from http://goo.gl/zi76ET Oh man, the more I read, the more this looks like an approaching trainwreck. Or it just might never go anywhere, which may be the better option. Discuss. (I did notice the word filter replacement before posting, but I don't care, it's funnier that way!)

Hey Northwesterners of the U.S., I think we should plan a run to Playland sometime this summer. The hard thing is coming up with a time that would accomodate everyone who wants to come. I'll just throw this out there- Who wants to make a run for the border for September 14th - 16th? I might be able to get a steal on up to two hotel rooms if anyone needs them. I also need to get my WA EDL so I can get back into the U.S.! Dates not firm at all, but who has any interest in this? I want to get some rides in on God, but not by myself...

I think they missed out on the perfect play on words: the ro-tayto! -
Wow, I'm feeling really sorry for all those people. I have heard burns are one of the most painful injuries. I can't even imagine how horrible that must have been, especially on a day where everyone was having fun and then... I know particulates like that can be very flammable, and I have seen several videos of the crazy holi day colored powders thrown all over each other, but I never connected the two before now. I hope everyone recovers fully and quickly.

I just saw this on twitter, and I think it's GRRREAT! F those things, seriously... I understand it makes your photography easier, but it absolutely ruins everyone else's attempt at photography. This is the greater issue for me: what's with selfies anyway? When did people's lives just become one big social media posting? Do you really need to put your face in the picture for me to know you went somewhere? I don't want to see your face, I already know what you look like; I want to see a picture of the cool stuff, not of you! Great job, Disney! However... You still suck for laying off U.S. workers and substituting cheaper outsourced overseas personnel for IT your work. We know Disney has absolutely no loyalty to the country of its origin, so I suggest you all start re-evaluating your own loyalties. Is there a topic here on this issue?

[RCT2] Sunland
LuminousAphid replied to coasterkidJacob's topic in Roller Coaster Games, Models, and Other Randomness
I like what you have so far, but agree with the mountain being blocky- that was the first thing I noticed, probably not the reaction to the scenery you would want One other tip, you could add some foliage around Streak- it would certainly look more natural with some shrubs or trees. Do trees increase excitement like other scenery/rides nearby do? -
Yahoo Travel's "Worst Theme Parks"
LuminousAphid replied to parkjunkie's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I just posted the same thing the other day in the "what defunct park intrigues you most" thread, I totally agree! It sounds and looks like so much fun, even if people were getting hurt. I guess a lot of the slides are still around, but it looks like they make you wear helmets and stuff... probably a really good call, but not the most fun thing on a hot day! I'm sure you've seen these if you've looked into this place, but they deserve to be reposted for how awesome they are 1987- the year I was born! 1991 Found these from the DoD3 website- excellent reading and a lot of it "worst theme park" related (redneck carnival rides) -
Hey, so I have been fighting the addiction to this game since I bought it again a couple years ago on amazon for $5, with both expansions. The game is great and now that I downloaded all the scenarios from the first game, I find myself playing even more. However, it seems like I have been running into the same problem each time I play recently-- I keep running out of space to build stuff! Also my parks keep getting overcrowded... I guess I have been choosing smaller scenarios, but I feel like I could use some organization tips and or tricks you guys might have to share. It would be awesome if this thread could also serve as a general depository for tips and tricks with the game. I will start with a couple that I'm sure everyone knows: - This is probably well-known, but if you are testing a coaster and it is going to crash (tip within a tip: test with 1 train if you are not sure it will work) you can close the ride and go into construction mode, and the trains will disappear and not crash! This also works to empty all the people out of a ride immediately without waiting for trains to finish their circuit- works well if you are trying to kick everyone out of the park - straight sections of track are cheap and can also (in my experience) lower nausea and intensity ratings compared to airtime hills, etc. It doesn't seem to hurt excitement, and sometimes raises it! If you want to cut down on vomit, try replacing some hills with straight track or less intense hills. Plus you can add an on-ride photo there for more $$ - The small-radius upward banked-to-unbanked turn is my favorite piece on woodies, and seems to make great ratings if used correctly (not too fast!) I'll try to get a screenshot of the one I mean, for some reason the game isn't saving screenshots right now

In the small selection of coasters I have ridden (so far) I seem to give an "Oh ****" at the top of the drop, then begin letting out a deep, guttural yell that rises to a "man scream" at the bottom as I feel those G's, then I just start laughing when the first rush of adrenaline passes. The last time I was at the local park, I rode the wood coaster (Timberhawk, it's a fun little woodie) at least 8 times, and I could NOT stop laughing each time through the second half of the ride! Backseat drop airtime is just really fun and makes me laugh uncontrollably.

I'm surprised no one has posted this to be funny, but after reading this article I really would love to go back in time and see this place: Action Park! Holy poo those alpine slides look like legit fun (and potentially lethal according to the internets) The park itself sounds like a one day park at best, but I would pay money to go back to before there were lawsuits waiting for anything half as bad as some of the things in the article. Of course, take it with a grain of salt--or believe it all since that's more fun and it doesn't hurt anyone's rep or anything edit: 5:05 deserves special mention, props to all three of those kids for holding on edit2: fixed link

The Official TPR Video Thread!
LuminousAphid replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
My god that thing looks good... I can't say if it looks slower, since I have only watched videos, but it definitely doesn't look slow to me! The airtime throughout the whole ride looks just amazing, especially that big floater 2/3 of the way through the 'out' section. The 'back' (second half) looks really fun too with all those little pops and dips. Thank you Robb and Elissa for sharing these videos, seriously- this is something new in my life that has made me realize I need to get my career/life going so I can go experience some of these things for myself. Motivation ftw! -
from jumpjet.info (I know there is a thread specifically about this coaster, but I want to hear about other old coasters as well!) Hey guys and gals, I just stumbled across this absolutely awesome design by Harry Traver (correct me if I'm wrong, the internet has been wrong before) which apparently operated in Crystal Beach Amusement Park in Ontario, CA. This thing looks crazy fun even by today's high standards, and I'm amazed something like this was bearable to ride back then. I'm surprised it apparently ran for 20 years, I would think the strong forces would make frequent re-tracking a must, or it would quickly get out of hand- especially with the freeze-thaw cycles Ontario probably experiences. Anyway it's an amazing-looking coaster: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFOBcTmCEMU Apparently there were more than one of these- possibly three? I guess this one is the most famous and biggest, again according to the internet Lets see your favorite "historic" coaster designs- I guess anything over 50 years old

Favorite Lighting Package
LuminousAphid replied to LuminousAphid's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
That thing is awesome and looks super fun It is like a smaller, faster version of the "Transformer" funfair ride that basically does the same thing. It looks cool too during the day from the videos I've watched. Also plays Star Ward theme, I wonder how much that costs them... Does anyone know the manufacturer and model of this "Transformer" ride? -
Alton Towers Discussion Thread
LuminousAphid replied to Ed's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Just saw this on the local news- glad everyone survived When I saw footage my first thought was "did they change to longer trains?" Then they said what happened -
Robb, while I totally agree with what you are saying, society today is all about protecting people (mostly from themselves) even at the cost of completely adulterating a fun experience. Hence you have the bleeding hearts here who have been trained to think just that way, claiming that there should have been more safety measures to keep this lady from f***ing up that jump. I personally wish that there were fewer safety measures in life, because you are correct: there will always be a bigger idiot, so why not just let them kill themselves off and leave the rest of society better for it? There are way too many stupid people as it is, and adding "extra safety" to everything is just going to mean those stupid people continue having more stupid kids together. When did one of society's main functions become "make sure stupid idiots don't kill themselves"? Natural selection of the best individuals, the main reason we humans have become so awesome, has been thrown out the window. As for "engineering responsibility," that's bullshit- almost anything can be dangerous if you don't use it properly, and trying to design away every conceivable danger will lead to a shit product. For god's sake, I could fall off this stool next to me and hurt myself; should we design a tip-proof stool with leg restraints so that it's perfectly safe? Ridiculous. And yes, I am fully aware this is "disrespectful" to the "victim," and I don't care because it's the truth, and she ain't here to be offended by it anyway. The only positive thing I can say with the info I know is that I respect that she served in the armed forces.
