Sommerdom 2011 - Hamburg carnival
simon8899 replied to simon8899's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Yes, its right next door from the carnival.... -
The carnival layout has been released. For me this summer is a mixed bag as there are... 3 coasters: The indoor Höllenblitz, a Wilde Maus (wild mouse) and the Schwarzkopf double-loop Teststrecke. 2 waterrides: The log-flume Wildwasserbahn as well as the Atlantis Rafting ...but next to the Airwolf - which in my opinion has some quite rough movements - there are no major inversion rides. But at least the classic favorites like the Zierer Waveswinger and the Huss Frisbee and Breakdancer are there as always. Now all I can hope for is dry weather.... Stay tuned for pictures as the carnival opens this friday... carnival layout

What area really needs a theme park?
simon8899 replied to let1gre's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I point out Berlin - I mean its the german capital with 3,5 million poeple excluding suburbs and the closest park is Belantis which is mid-sized. There once was Spreepark but the owner was known for his dubiuos ways and so the park closed in bancruptcy. They now rack their brains about what to do with the area of the closed airport Tempelhof. My idea would be to turn part of it into a new city-center park - till 2nd world war they had one called Lunapark - would be nice. -
Looks like a good park in the making. It will be a gamble to operate it year-round as a) weather can get quite bad in northern europe in winter (rain - lots of rain, snowstorms, freezing degrees for weeks) and b) as most parks do their rides rehab and construction during that times the visitors are not used to have those during opening hours. I would be quite apalled if major rides would be down for rehab during opening-hours as this is unseen in european parks. Signs like "The following rides are not operating today:" are unknown in our parks. I still remember when Six Flags tried their luck in the netherlands they were quite dissatisfied as they didn't look into those problems beforehand - its simply a little different to operate a park in europe than in the US.... What I quite hope for - as they mention Vekoma - that they built an accelerator coaster like Disneyland Paris' Space Mountain....

Well because guests riding rides too often cost too much - and this way even when the park is empty you bloodsucking guest don't ride too much.... -

Well in germany nearly all major routes have bicycle-lanes - sometimes there're not in top condition, but they at least have them.... Check for if and which streets biking is allowed. In Calif there were so-called "shared" roads with appropriate signs. On other roads it was explicitly forbidden - and I don't know if on on "unsigned" roads bikes are handled like jaywalkers. Better check ahead with the FL traffic authority webiste. -

I've seen in California that biking can be tricky as many drivers don't "see" bikes well. I was even honked when staying behind a group of bikes on a narrow street and a lorry comming the other way. It was highly uncommon for streets to have bicycle-lanes - best to plan ahead for by-roads. -

If you rent a car you can also drive to Busch Gardens in Tampa. And try to schedule out of the US holiday season to avoid the lines. -
I like the old-style seats like on Waveswingers and other chainflyers more - they even used them on early Starflyers like on the one at Tivoli Gardens. The new seats kill too much thrill for me.... And of course seats should be attached with chains - so you can swing a little back and forth....

I really don't like drop-towers. Did Scream in Heide-Park once and would be happy to never do it again. Hollywood Tower Hotel is the mightiest I do in drop-towers.... -

The Bayernkurve must be quite an oldie...remember those from my kids days at the carnival. And its nice to see Hersheypark didn't messed around with the restraints on the Schwarzkopf looper like in SFMM - adding OTSRs would ruin a perfect ride! -

Nice TR you put up here.... What I noticed on american parks - and not only there - that you really like german names on things. But why doesn't anyone google if its spelled correct??? It's "Ratskeller" and not "Rahtskeller"... It would be if we would call "Frisbee" "Frissbe". -

The Intamin looper at Space world still looks a lot like a late Schwarzkopf looper..... The "airy" seats on the ferris wheel look like big fun. And whats the use of an enclosed water-ride? Surely they have a lot of rain there.... -
Djurs Sommerland, Construction Site?!

Looks like a cool day! I think the OTSRs have ruined Revolution. My fav coaster was Scream when I was there in May - mostly because most poeple didn't venture behind the then-closed "DC Comics Land" and I could ride it 10 times without even getting out of the train..... -
Most Notable Accident
simon8899 replied to dropthefloor's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
At the Hamburg carnival Sommerdom in 1981 a crane operated by showmen Witte moved into an operating Schwarzkopf Enterprise - 7 poeple killed either by the impact of the crane or the gondolas got loose and crashed hard into the surroundings and 15 heavily injured. Witte was fined for manslaughter. Years later Witte went bancrupt with the Berlin park "Spreepark", but he fled with several portable rides to south america where he was later involved in drug trafficking.... -
Rome ruins is a great sight - especially when you think what ancient rome offered before going downward: concrete domes, fresh hot and cold water, sufficient drainage system, floor heating....and that when the rest of europe was still living in shacks.

Photo TR: A fun but crowded day in EuropaPark
simon8899 replied to Kooky's topic in Photo Trip Report Archive
Nice Photo TR - now nearly 10 years since I was there last. Main problem is that from Hamburg parks like Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen is much closer than Europa Park. Plus there is so little outside the park for me to make a whole holiday.... I guess the poeple comming later were mostly locals with a season-pass - especially off-season always do the more popular rides in the morning. -
New shuttle coaster for Conny Land for 2007
simon8899 replied to thomas2's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I've always thought that this one *looks* like an extremely cool ride. I hope after hammering out the bugs out of this prototype that more will show up....I really like shuttle coasters.
