Worlds of Fun (WOF) Discussion Thread
The Yeti replied to OzCatter's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I could really care less about what they do with the entrance, but I think the Europe area of the park needs a coaster about as badly as Worlds of Fun itself needs a new coaster. This marking stuff is taking me back to when Prowler was built, but honestly I'm not going to get my hopes up. Plus I no longer live anywhere near Worlds of Fun, but I still want to see my old home park give me a good reason to visit again! -

I may be wrong, but I think that sound you're referring to is coming from the anti-rollback mechanisms on the ride. I'm not sure Mako has anti-rollback mechanisms, but from what I remember Gatekeeper had a similar sound due to them. -
Hersheypark (HP) Discussion Thread
The Yeti replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I had the pleasure of visiting Hersheypark for the first time on Sunday for my company picnic and I immediately fell in love with the park. It really has great collection of roller coasters and unfortunately I did not get to ride all of them. It was nice having the park to just my company and one or two others as the lines were relatively short; however, when I first got there my friends and I went to Skyrush and waited nearly an hour. I think they were running one train, and they may have added a second sometime while we were in line, but operations on the ride were so slow it was tough to tell. One of my coworkers who wasn't far ahead of me in the line said some lady on her train started freaking out when the ride started moving. The operator stopped the train near the bottom of the lift hill to let the lady off. It was strange to see a ride which normally rockets up the lift move at a snail's pace. I should have gone with my instinct and saved Skyrush for later, as the line died down and I could have gotten on some of the rides I missed. Oh well...on to the rides! Skyrush - 10/10 - First ride was in the back, second in the front and my third and fourth were also in the back. My first ride was kind of a blur, and it felt a little underwhelming, but after a few more rides I realized just how incredible this ride is. There is so much insane airtime. The first drop got scarier each time I rode. I haven't been afraid to put my hands up on a ride since I was a child. During my last two rides I tried to put my hands up on the first drop, but I was yanked out of my seat near the top and I knew the scariest moment was yet to come. I cannot wait to get back and ride this again. I do agree that the restraints could be much, much better, but it really did not diminish the ride experience for me at all. Storm Runner - 9/10 - One ride in front, one two from the back and one three from the back (I can't remember how many rows there were). This was a near perfect launch coaster. There is some great airtime both cresting the top and going down the top hat, and the zero-g roll/flying snake dive combo is incredible. Add in the good G's and crazy, awesome ending, and you have a real winner here. I'd give Storm Runner 10/10 if it was a tiny bit longer! Fahrenheit - 9/10 - I've read some fairly negative reviews of this ride and I really don't get it. I rode twice in the back seat. I thought the ride had some great G's, fantastic airtime and some of the best corkscrews I've experienced. The exit of the Norwegian loop provided some surprisingly good air and the airtime hill had some nice ejector air. The Cobra Roll was just okay, but at least there was no head banging! I would really love to see some more of these coasters from Intamin in the future. Great Bear - 7/10 - I rode once in the back. I felt that the ride had a pretty good layout, but wasn't as intense as I was hoping. I liked the pre-drop section after the lift, and the turn after the zero-g roll was a nice touch. I thought the zero-g roll was nice and snappy, but it wasn't quite as good as Montu's or any of the BTRs. Sidewinder - 6/10 - I've got to say that I liked the restraints on this Boomerang. Otherwise the ride was pretty standard and left me a bit dizzy afterwards, which in my book is actually somewhat of a good thing. Log Ride (I can't remember the name) - 6/10 - This was a pretty solid flume. It had some decent speed between the first and second lifts, and I managed to get a friend to ride who claimed after they rode Comet earlier in the day that they were done with rides for the whole day. Mine Train Thing (Again, I can't remember the name) - 3/10 - We only rode because of the aforementioned friend, and it was good to see her get on a coaster that was at her pace. With a little determination, I believe I could get her comfortable with coasters! Unfortunately, I missed out on Super Dooper Looper, Lightning Racers, Comet, Wildcat and Laff Track. Hopefully I can get back to Hershey later this summer, but there are a lot of other parks I still want to hit. I would say there's always next year...but Skyrush...and Storm Runner...and Fahrenheit. What an amazing collection of Intamin. -
I have never understood this because I see the best reaction from all ages on coasters that are very intense. Many people argue that a park "doesn't want a coaster that intense because it won't appeal to as many people" but at most parks, their most intense coaster is often the most popular with the GP. I don't see why notable airtime would make this more or less family friendly. At the end of the day it is very tall and fast, and most people will decide to ride it or not ride it based on that, not on the negative G calculation. I think this is very true. Silver Dollar City's most intense ride is easily Outlaw Run, and you see more smiles and laughter on that break run than on any other ride I've seen. There are also tons of kids in the 7-10 year old age group that will ride and then get right back in line, and that's how I was at that age, too. A 200-foot coaster is going to scare people away because of the height, not because of the g-forces.

The most *gasp* flat ride ever!
The Yeti replied to RctInfinity's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Sooooo Maybe it's just me, but I don't really see how "The most *gasp* flat ride ever!" equals "Tell me... what's the worst flat ride you've ridden?" The most flat ride ever, sort of like a flat soda or (to the straight man/gay woman?) a flat chest, the use of flat implies it's boring. I didn't create this thread, but it's a pun. I generally try to stay away from boring rides. The first ones that come to mind are the flat rides for younger kids, like the miniature swinging ships, but I'm not going to count those. The most boring flat ride I've ridden as an adult would have to be the Dumbo ride. Actually, no...Aladdin's Magic Carpet ride at Magic Kingdom (I waited probably 45 minutes with my nephews for this one). One Fish, Two Fish with its water effect on the other hand is a way to make a Dumbo style ride somewhat fun. -
Kings Dominion (KD) Discussion Thread
The Yeti replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I made my first trip ever to Kings Dominion last Sunday and I can't imagine that I will ever get to have another day like it at this park again. I assumed the park would be slower than usual with it being Easter Sunday, but with the forecasted rain the place was deserted. I got to the park with my brother at opening and went straight to Volcano. After getting rides in the front row and row seven, I figured we had better visit some other coasters before the park got too busy. It turned out that the only reason I waited more than ten minutes for any ride was because operations were extremely slow or because I waited for the front seat. I'm not sure why, but maybe 30 minutes after opening they roped off the last two seats on Volcano. My ride counts and thoughts: 9x Intimidator - 10/10 - I managed three rides in the front, four in the back and five in row seven. Everything up to the trim before the second airtime hill is just absolutely insane. Each time I rode I was just blown away. This is such an incredible ride and I look forward to many more rides this season. 6x Volcano - 8/10 - The launches were great, as was the hangtime on the first inversion in the back seat, otherwise the final drop was the only part of the ride that really stood out to me. It was still a very fun ride and I look forward to more in the future. 5x Dominator - 9/10 - This is a really great floorless coaster. I love the layout of the first half, and the extra turns you get between elements really gives it an edge over other floorless coasters. The lack of a zero-g roll makes me a little sad though... 3x Flight of Fear 8/10 - This was a good ride, but a little rough. I'd say it's more fun than Rock N Rollercoaster, just not as smooth. 1x Grizzly - 7/10 - This coaster was surprisingly good. The first two drops must have been retracked recently. I was bracing myself for the worst when surprisingly there was little to no rattle on those drops, but the rest of the ride though was pretty rough. The airtime hill into the tunnel was awesome! 1x Rebel Yell - 5/10 - Lots of good airtime, but on each hill I was terrified to reach the bottom. Not the most comfortable ride, but I did ride in the back seat and I'd certainly ride again! 1x Ricochet - 4/10 - Fun little mouse coaster, but not a lot else to offer. 2x Backlot Stunt Coaster - 7/10 - This was a fun little ride. The airtime on the last hill in the back seat was verrrry nice and surprising. 2x Drop Tower - 9/10 - I love drop towers. This one is very tall and does not disappoint! Taking 10 minutes to load 20 passengers was a little frustrating. Then again the ride was a walk on so I really can't complain. 2x Delirium - 8/10 - Definitely a good ride, but of course I wish there were a few more swings at full height. 1x Windseeker - 7/10 - These rides just scare the crap out of me, but they're pretty fun. 1x The Crypt - 7/10 - This ride was surprisingly good. I think the operator gave us a few extra flips! 1x Berserker - 6/10 - I loved Phoenix at Busch Gardens, but I haven't ridden it in a while and Berserker just didn't seem to wow me. I'm not sure if they're the same height or not, but it was still fun. I've been thinking about how awesome I305 was all week. I cannot wait to go back! -
Worlds of Fun (WOF) Discussion Thread

CP fanboys will be pissed when they hear this. The truth hurts. I'm sure they're already jealous that Worlds of Fun got Linus Launcher this year. -
Worlds of Fun (WOF) Discussion Thread
The Yeti replied to OzCatter's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I wish Worlds of Fun would focus on keeping Prowler in good shape rather than doing this work on Timberwolf. I've only ridden Prowler probably 4 times, twice in 2009 and twice in 2015, and it really has not aged well. Timberwolf was closed when I visited last year and it didn't seem like much of a loss. Maybe nostalgia is lost on me, but if they built a GOOD new coaster to replace Timberwolf, I think the GP would be pleased and Worlds of Fun could draw better crowds. -
No, i know that and get all that, Im just curious why so many people act like this coaster type is going to do things never seen or heard of before with elements It's because RMC is building these rides rather than a different coaster company. We've seen what they can do with wooden coasters. They've already introduced the 180 degree stall and the 200 degree stall, among other never before seen elements, so because the T-REX track can withstand greater forces than their wooden designs, I'd expect to see some crazy stuff out of these coasters.

Cedar Point (CP) Discussion Thread

Better airtime than you'll find on probably any other B&M coaster (Nitro is the best non-dive B&M coaster I've experienced airtime-wise). The drops on Sheikra are great, even the second one, and Valravn's drops are taller...so essentially that's more great airtime. -

If I had Brad's and Nick's job, whoever the hell they are, I would also use my job as an excuse to visit Carowinds and ride Fury 325... -
I did word my previous post poorly. I don't expect the launch on Lightning Rod to be an accelerated lift similar to Maverick's first launch or something with the speed of SkyRush's lift, but it still isn't a normal launch compared to something like Mr. Freeze. That is something I would like to see on an RMC coaster in the future and I'm sure that will come with time, whether it is a steel or wooden coaster.
-
I don't think the concept is gimmicky at all really. The way I see it, the whole point of the new track is to allow their steel coasters to withstand higher forces than what wooden coasters or other coasters using their I-beams can. I think the single rail system will look strange, but when it comes down to it RMC is just offering a steel coaster with insane potential, solely because it is from RMC. Some of the elements shown in the teaser videos are unlike anything we have seen from other coaster manufacturers. The only thing that I believe makes Lightning Rod's launch a gimmick is the fact that it's more of an accelerated lift hill rather than what we see on other launch coasters. Even then, I see Herschend as the guilty party in wanting a wooden coaster with a launch. They're the ones that will market the ride to the GP as the first wooden launched coaster, not RMC. I've said it before, but Herschend seems to like these sorts of gimmicks.
-
I'm not quite sure as to which turn you were referring, the U shaped turn in the front or the one in the back of the photo, but either way it doesn't really look like one of RMC's "wave" turns which pop outward at the apex of the hill/turn. I guess there still could be airtime though depending on the speed at which the turn(s) are taken, but it doesn't look like the wave turns on Outlaw Run and Lightning Rod.

Six Flags America (SFA) Discussion Thread
The Yeti replied to Mind Eraser's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
The park also suffers from a lack of great rides. I moved to DC at the end of this summer and I easily could have visited the park this year, but instead I opted to visit Great Adventure. Of course, El Toro and Kingda Ka were on my bucket list - but I still would have gone to Six Flags America if they had anything that I felt warranted an immediate visit besides Superman. Next season, I am most definitely planning to visit Kings Dominion, Busch Gardens and Hershey Park, and maybe even Six Flags Great Adventure again, but I still don't feel the need to visit Six Flags America. If I pick up a season pass, I'm sure I'll go, but I'm more interested in the season pass for the entry to other Six Flags parks. -
Maybe the queue wasn't made to be immersive when Potter came in because DD was already on the chopping block? If there are changes to Dragon Challenge, I would love to see additional theming added to the ride itself. Who is to say they can't add tunnels and other near-miss elements? That would make it less of an eyesore and more on par with the theming in the rest of the park. I, of course, would also like to see the ride duel again on top of additional theming. If Dragon Challenge is going, I just hope they replace it with another thrilling coaster. The big thrills is one thing IOA has always had going for it, and I would hate to see the Potterverse lose its most thrilling ride.

Buy or Build your own theme park???
The Yeti replied to Jodon's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
If I won the Powerball I would absolutely want to invest in building my own theme park. I would start out small but with a couple great coasters and thrill rides, and they would all be wonderfully themed. -
A couple of stories come to mind here. When I was about seven years old, I visited BGT for the second or third time and I had just passed the 48 inch mark. For the first time I was able to ride Python and Phoenix, and even though Phoenix scared the crap out of me, I really wanted to ride those two again. My family was planning to stay until the park closed, but they ended up deciding to get on the road early to drive all the way from Tampa back to Nebraska. I wound up crying uncontrollably, and my mom said she had never seen me act like that before or since then. I even tried to hide from my parents as we were exiting, still bawling, in an attempt to get re-rides on Python and Phoenix. To this day, I still feel like a spoiled, ungrateful little brat for throwing a complete tantrum. When I was about eight years old during a trip to Orlando, I came down with the flu. While I was mostly better but not fully recovered, my family was going to the Magic Kingdom and my parents decided it would be best if they rented a wheelchair for me so as not to wear me out. Getting to the front of the lines on each ride was nice...very nice. However, I remember when boarding Splash Mountain, I stood up and walked to my assigned boat, and a girl and her father in the normal line started calling out to the ride attendants questioning what was wrong with me. That was probably the most embarrassing, shameful moment I've experienced at any theme park.
