Europa Park Discussion Thread
cal1br3tto replied to Ultracoasters's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Looks good to me. The first drop was the only part of Apocalypse I really enjoyed. As a (fairly casual) fan of GCIs, I'm sure I will enjoy this. I like the theming they have planned for it. -
^That seemed clear to me from the original article, but I can see opportunists taking advantage of people whose brains shut off after reading such eye-catching headlines. Looking forward to hearing details on this if they go through with it. How fast it will fill up, travel timeframes allowed, who they'll accept, what exactly you're required to say and do, etc.

The Official iPhone Discussion thread
cal1br3tto replied to robbalvey's topic in Random, Random, Random
I'm not getting an iPhone because I'm not currently a "smart phone person" (although I do think the benefits they offer are pretty extensive). My dad will not be upgrading from the iPhone 4, but he did get iOS5. He likes it fine so far but isn't that fond of the cloud service. Anyone else intrigued by Siri? I know it's not new but it sounds like it will be more versatile on the 4s. -
Knoebels Discussion Thread

^That was my original understanding of ring carousels. Nowadays the SCBB one, as well as the others I've ridden, releases them continuously throughout the ride. Incidentally, Knoebels is the only park I've visited that is known for having a brass ring in play every cycle. -
I picked the right day to watch America's Next Top Model with my mom. They went to Santa Monica Pier and did a challenge on a carousel, so I was able to spout some nerdy comments. I need to watch ANTM more often; don't know why I always miss it.

Water Coaster VS Log Flume
cal1br3tto replied to dmaxsba2408's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I count anything listed on RCDB (plus traveling coasters). I know some people only "count" a ride based on what the overall ride type is, so coaster/flume hybrids and dark coasters aren't credits to them, but I count coasters as credits even if they also fall into other ride categories. There are also water slides referred to as "water coasters" that are not roller coasters, and some parks describe rides like shoot-the-chutes as "coasters" even though they are not roller coasters. -
I miss all the Intamin Ag 1st Gen Free Falls!

I thought Demon Drop at Dorney Park was fairly exciting, but not amazing. I was a bit apprehensive before riding and while going up the lift, and the drop was a fun scare, but it wasn't much more intense than a standard tower, if at all. Oddly, I have a book that actually considers this to be a roller coaster. It's even officially listed as part of Cedar Point's coaster collection. Thankfully for my sanity and reputation, I have declined to count it as a credit. -

^Thanks for the insight; I hadn't thought about it that way before. I've taken a bit of an interest in four-abreast carousels after realizing how uncommon they are. On a side note, Derby Racers sure can be insane! -
^^I first read that as "Stoner Kebab". Hey, that could make sense!

^^^I'd like to visit that one someday. On a related note, is it just me or do ring carousels seem to run faster than other ones? I find them slightly nauseating to watch, but I wasn't sure if they're actually faster or if I just spend more time observing them because, after all, I don't bother queueing for most normal carousels. -

Ah, I wasn't sure if the carousel runs the same cycle every time, or if they put the arm out at a consistent time. Sounds like 10 may be a bit low then. I've also heard of people who can grab two or more "at a time", but my horse always moves so fast I feel like I can barely get one! -

Nice, sounds like you only missed one, because once I caught a ring every time and ended up with 10. I was proud of myself since usually when I ride a ring carousel, I miss the first or last, and sometimes one or two in between. I'm curious about reports on the timing of the Black Diamond stunts. I don't know much about dark rides, but I would guess that simple adjustments would at least make things better for the front car, and possibly the second also. -
^^I'm envious of those who can fly easily. I didn't start flying until fairly recently, and I still don't very often. And usually, either I have to "flap" to keep myself up, or I'm just in a vehicle that's flying. Happily, however, I generally seem to feel speed and airtime on coasters, at least!

Thanks for the detailed review, CoasterLover. Sounds like a fun, thoughtfully designed and rider-friendly attraction. I'm sure I will be one of countless people who will enjoy it, and I look forward to riding. -
Creepy, I was just reading about Conneaut elsewhere when I jump over here and find this is the highest topic. I need to get to this park soon. I used to like traditional amusement parks, but still take them for granted as just one of a number of enjoyable park styles. However, my preference for them has increased quite a bit. So this sounds like my kind of park. Seems they still have an interesting, if modest, ride collection, too.

Great news! I suppose it's of little consequence to me, but I'm happy for the park (and the soon-to-be riders). -
^^^I get sleep paralysis occasionally too. Usually it's quick and inconsequential, but every once in a while it's powerful enough to freak me out. I have also experienced hypnic jerks on occasion throughout my life. Sometimes there is an actual falling scenario in my dream, but other times I only recall a light, seemingly dreamless sleep before the jolt. Other situations I have noticed since childhood include the inability to run at full speed (this can be very frightening) and the inability to shout audibly. Last night was a stressful dream night for me. Scenes included eerie classic dark rides, a fire, and a plane crashing in front of me. The night before, I had another dream about driving recklessly, one of my most troubling recurring themes.

^Water Swings are coming back? Yay! I will admit, I like Yo-Yos for what they are, but I was still disappointed by the change from such an iconic location. I'm hoping the park will pull through, preserve what I loved about it in the past, and, of course, continue to improve. -
Again, thanks for all the comments! Yay, I'm not the only person around here who loves it! Happily, I just got another "shipment" from the Seaside shop. Listen to Larry. Personally, I have been known to make little children quite upset with me at Oaks. Sorry to hear the confirmation. I have seen a couple glowing reviews from enthusiasts online. Not sure if there's been a decline in quality or if it's a matter of taste/skill/crowd.
