Top 5 wood and steel coasters
OldJJman replied to a topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Steel top 5 (of 768) 1. Expedition GeForce - Best first drop anywhere. Great Airtime. 2. S:RoS - SFNE - Great ride, great pacing, great airtime. 3. Eagle Fortress - Absolute insanity at it's finest! 4. Kawasemi - It's amazing how many positive, negative and lateral forces can be in such a small ride! 5. Kumba - B&M's finest (with honorable mentions to Dragon Kahn, Nemesis and Superman / la Atracción de Acero) Wood top 5 (of 162) 1. T-Express - Speed and airtime extreme. 2. Ozark Wildcat - Great, relentless, out-of-control ride. 3. Voyage - Nice long ride that does a little bit of everything (pretty well too). 4. Hades - Great ride, best tunnel, does quite a bit over the course. 5. Tonnere de Zeus - Very powerful, relentless ride. JJ -
Weirdest Things The 'GP' Have Said
OldJJman replied to maliboomer's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
While showing a friend the model of Space Mountain at Disneyland, some random guy walked up and gave us some additional "facts": "Did you guys know that this model isn't accurate? When it was first built, the chain part was on the outside of the building! It was clocked at over 102 mph! I know because I rode it. My friend was on the construction crew. I got to ride it back then. Good thing that they slowed it down, huh?" Being dumbfounded, I just let it go. -

Very cool Cameron!! I would love to see the TailCam* used on any flight! Thanks for sharing! JJ *This is NOT to imply that I'd like to see Cam's tail ever. Unlike Lou. -
I watch pretty much only the Expedition dvd, and show it to quite a few friends. (Some I think have ordered some too!) Usually, there will be a coaster that piques their interest, and then I use the footage (or CITR) to show them POV. As far as the dark ride idea goes... Wow. I think it would be great, but some of those dark rides are so all-encompassing, it might be difficult to capture the real essence of a ride. Rides like "Mystery Powder", "Magical Circus", immediately come to mind. I think that the "Expedition" version gives those enough credence, that a full POV may not be warranted. Then again, Robb could probably pull it off quite effectively. Now, for the Wierd/Crazy/DANGEROUS Asian rides... That would be frickin' hilarious!!! Then again, an uncensored "Worst of Coasters" (Manhattan Express, etc..) would be AWESOME!!!! JJ

Suspension on a roller coaster train?
OldJJman replied to Mechanic's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
The only other examples that I can think of are: 1. Take a look at some of the older wooden coaster trains. I believe that the "Prior & Church" trains may have had leaf springs as part of their design at one time. 2. Arrow inverteds. Most (if not all) have at least 8 true shock absorbers per car, 4 in front and 4 behind the seating bucket. It dampens the radical swinging motion of the cars. Because they have to be constantly lubed, that's why there are tarps covering those assemblies. Look at the pics here of Ninja at SFMM. Ex 1, Ex. 2. As for conjecture as to why more don't have them: 1. Maintenance nightmare. Springs exposed to major weight differences and constant pounding, along with the excessive G forces, could make them wear out extremely quick. 2. See #1 Edited to add pics. -
Suspension on a roller coaster train?
OldJJman replied to Mechanic's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Actually, I know Antelope at Gulliver's Warrington, DOES have shock absorbers!! (i.e. springs in the wheel assemblies) It is an annoying ride, because it's ALWAYS bouncing around. I KNOW I've ridden another one, but I can't remember it right now. I'll look and see if I have some pics of the assemblies. JJ EDIT: No I don't have pics of the wheel assemblies. But, yes, it does use springs. TERRIBLE ride. I want to say that Pegasus at Efteling has the shock absorbers too, but I'm not 100% sure of that one. JJ -

Not. You're right about those 2. They're damned expensive!! But, there are about 6 "partner" hotels around the outer edge road, all connected by the Disney "Methos POV" bus line. JJ -

Sorry Wes! But I have to agree with R&E on this one. I booked at one of the partner hotels, the Sheraton Grand Tokyo Bay for $153/night, for next month. I wouldn't consider that too shabby. JJ -

That really depends on your perspective. Being that there are very few true "interactive" attractions out there, you'd have a hard time convincing people of that. Most of your "interactive" attractions are shooting games of some sort, such as: Toy Story Men In Black Challenge of Tutenkamen Labyrinth of the Minotaur Many Sally dark rides Certain "Scary" rides where scaractors are employed (esp. during halloween) Etc... Even the "new" "Spaceship Earth" at Epcot displays these qualities. While in application that may be true, the fact remains that you've forgotten about the interactive connection between the players who compete with each other for a score. Other attractions include things like stuff you'd find at Disneyquest or the "Animation" building at DCA. Whether it's "Which Disney character are you most like" or "Design and ride your own coaster" (NEVER AGAIN! I swear!), the interactiveness wears off quickly. Unfortunately, if you've done them, you've DONE them. You really have no reason to go back (at least I don't), as the entertainment value is quite low. People go to these places to be entertained. While in fact, people entertaining themselves can be accomplished almost anywhere. (See the Opening day at SFOG PTR). IMO, you've picked a tough subject. JJ
