Help me identify this antique woodie!

Thanks for the information! It is a great photo..I love the little go kart track next to the coaster and you can see a carousel over there in the distance too. -

OK one more challenge..this was in the same pack of photos as the last one, so I believe this is still in the Bay Area, but is that the Golden Gate in the top right? Would that make this Alameda? I know there was a theme park on Alameda back then called Neptune Beach but this doesnt look like that. -

Wow, thanks a ton Loefet, TPR comes through again, thats not just similar that's the exact same one! I couldnt tell from my image but its quite obvious in yours where you can see a skier jumping. I never would have guessed that it was a ski jump in San Francisco! -

Yeah that gap in the middle is what is so perplexing. -

I'm positive this one is in San Francisco because it's in a pack of photos from the International Exposition in San Francisco and was taken on Feb 21st, 1939. At first glance the frame work screamed roller coaster, but after looking more closely it looks way too big and not like a coaster at all..but intriguing as hell whatever it is. I have a much higher resolution scan but I shrunk it to fit here. -

Wow excellent find..I guess it was mislabelled as SF. That sure looks awful wide to just be a slide! Surprised this was in long beach...Didn't know my great grandparents ever went down there - that's my great grandmother in the photo. (They lived in northern california and this is 1921, a weekend in southern california is obviously much more difficult then than it is today) Apparently the location in question was The Long Beach Pike, and in the photograph is a wooden spiral slide called "Niagra Barrel". Fascinating! Thanks for the input, I knew this was the perfect community to ask! I have another really old photo with what appears to be wooden coaster in it..perhaps I should post that one as well. -

If it is a side friction, it would have to be this one: http://rcdb.com/10217.htm based on the date..most of the side frictions Ive seen look pretty much like leap the dips though. -
Restoring old family photos I came across this photo that is circa 1921 taken in San Francisco (I believe this was at Playand At The Sea)..Im curious, could this be an old wooden side friction coaster in the background, or possibly a log flume or something since I havent seen wooden side frictions with enclosed bottom before. It's interesting, whatever it is.

If you plan on visiting at least twice in the next few months then go ahead and get it, because it will pay for itself anyway. The next year's passes usually come out near the end about September I think (I got my 2013 pass last september), but yes if you buy a "next year" season pass it can be used immediately.

Best And Worst Coaster In California
singemfrc replied to pgathriller's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
My favorites have changed significantly since my last post.. Favorite Steel: Superman: Ultimate Flight (SFDK), Tatsu (SFMM), Green Lantern (SFMM) Favorite Wood: Gold Rusher (CGA), Giant Dipper (SCBB) X2 is on the disabled list of my picks until it stops trying to kill me. -
The "Pleasant/Unpleasant Surprise" Thread

Huge pleasant surprise when I finally got a chance to get on Green Lantern First Flight, the ZacSpin at SFMM. I've heard all kinds of reviews from "eh its boring it never flips" to "its the most painful coaster ever" and I was shocked to find that I absolutely loved it. The second ride I took was the most intense coaster ride I've ever had and it wasn't at all painful. Unpleasant surprise at the same park..how ridiculously rough and painful X2 has gotten. Seems the only way to get a decent ride anymore is to ride on the inside and find some poor sap that's heavier than you to take the punishment on the outside. Two rides in two days and my calves hurt for days. Such a shame, that first drop is the best in the business. -

^ OK then V2 is different because they are not all bolted in the same holes. Some are farther up, some are farther back, it doesnt seem like there's any rhyme or reason to where they bolted each buckle. I dont think they intentionally randomized it, it may just be from maintenance over the years removing/replacing buckles and not bolting it into the same holes or something. On some seats both buckles are so far back that only really skinny people can use the seat at all...thats what I was getting at in my last post, I wondered if for safety they made it so that only skinny people could use that row, but I doubted it, and the fact that WT isnt the same pretty much confirms that isnt the case. Sorry the WT photo was old, it was the clearest photo I could find of the sides of the seats. -
You have a gold pass from SFMM don't you? If you do, Oasis Plaza opens 5-10 minutes early for gold pass holders so you can do Medusa (and Kong if you're feeling spry) first and still make it to Superman before there's a real line. If you havent done SUF yet try to get both rows 1 and 6. The view of the roll in row 1 is spectacular and the airtime in row 6 is awesome. They don't always have a sign advertising the gold pass entry, so talk to the employee holding the rope if its not posted. Unless it's a Saturday or other unusually busy day you can almost always ride everything before it gets busy if you get there early and hustle.. When I go on Sundays I can usually ride all 6 coasters and be on my way to the parking lot by 12 or 12:30 as the crowds are still streaming in.

That is awesome, I wish I could have seen his face on the first drop! Good god, 2.5 hrs on Riddler? Even during its worst time I dont remember seeing a line that long. Thats when you definitely take advantage of the single rider line and cut that wait time to nothing! Scream's other train has been in rehab for a while, Colossus no idea..doubt they'd be starting rehab on it now. The chatting thing is a problem at SFMM, it creates the SFMM-patented one train stack, where you sit on the brake run waiting to enter the station just because the ride op isnt paying attention. Did you try the back row? The front row is tempting for the view, but the back is significantly more forceful. In my experience there's more difference in intensity between the front and back row on this coaster than any other I've tried (I've yet to have a back row ride on Flight Deck at CGA..to be remedied soon) Yeah it originally only had the lap bars and the OTSRs were added in the 90s for some unknown reason (probably some stupid California law)...theyre a sometimes hot topic of discussion, there's petitions out there to remove them. Revolution requires a rather unique method of defensive riding to ride pain free and it took me a while to figure it out.

Are you saying that in some rows Intamin wants the restraint to be tighter so they put the buckle in a place that will not allow a rider of a size that would prevent the OTSR from being that tight?
