Waldameer Discussion Thread
Myself replied to Millennium ForceJZ's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
^I was wondering when someone would post that. Waldameer's been set on having a ride there since they re-did the train loop for RFII. It just wasn't as noticeable until they installed the crossing gates (which were purchased at once with the other three sets). It's a good place to put a ride, though once this spot's taken up, I think Waldameer is entirely landlocked unless they compromise part of the parking lot. -

Here are pics I took where the change is very noticeable. Look at the top right. The entire train is in the bank here...if it were entering or exiting, it would be obvious here, but the track tells all. Here's a shot from 2008 showing how it's supposed to be. If taken in 2009, all but the last car would be banked to the right here. -

Way to take my job Kennyweird... Just kidding! I've been wanting close-up footer pics, but have been unable to find a place to stand without being in 3 feet of snow. My most recent stop was Friday... didn't see anything TOO interesting that I could get to, so I didn't upload my pics...what you see above is what it was like then. I've driven by a lot since then without stopping, and it's still the same except for land progression. I did, however, get pics from Wednesday of actual goings-on at the site. I had hoped for something else new today, for one big update, but there wasn't: This drill was moving around on the far end of the site. Not sure what the blue arm thing is, but here footers are being poured. In a way, Arrow is partially to thank for the coaster. Supports. Over half of the on-site supports are buried under snow. -

We could always go back to the snow...I think everyone around here is tired of it! But if you look at the above picture, you'll see the outline of a building on the wall to the right of the tunnel. That was the last remaining of the original ticket booths (they stopped using tickets in 2005). Now it's been removed as well. It seems like a no brainer, but here's hoping they paint over that. -

It's true! There seemed to be a lot going on when I went past. There was also a truck of supports being unloaded (mostly tall ones). -

Here's a slightly less sarcastic update. If it weren't for all the snow, I'd have had better shots. The newest pieces are at left. 10 total. For all you support fans. One of two pile drivers on site...bet they're having difficulties with 2 feet of snow to deal with and another foot projected for tomorrow! -

It was bought by the same Costa Rica park that got our Flying Carpet and Idlewild's Trinado. -

It's never been officially confirmed, but throughout the park, it's generally been known that 2009 was also the King Kahuna's last year. Today, I drove by the park and saw that it was being dismantled, which is about the best confirmation we can get. -

^Exactly. When I was hired, I was sent directly to Kiddieland, where over half the crew was made up of minors. On the contrary, my current crew ended the season with only two. If you TRULY enjoy your job there, you will NEVER feel like a slave. I had quite a few days where I felt like one in Kiddieland, but ever since my transfer, I've enjoyed almost every minute of it. And even as a minor, I made a decent amount of money that I still have most of (I don't spend much either). As far as off days are concerned, I've never been denied a day off that I requested. But I'm one of the few people I know who spent at least half of their days off (or at least time after your shift ended) at the park anyway, to ride. -

An example of horrible parenting skills

It never ceases to amaze me how far people are willing to go to bypass a rule. Last year (or was it 08?) a family brought their child to Kennywood with wooden blocks tied to her feet so she would "meet" the height requirements. Needless to say, no one who works there is quite dumb enough not to notice, and they didn't help her at all. Some people also try the "He/she can handle it" approach, especially on the Thunderbolt, which has the second-highest requirement (after King Kahuna) in the park. I also *LOVE* when people use the "they were just on here!" excuse. No, they were not. I've been on this ride for the past hour and a half, and we definitely would have noticed that your child is too short. This entry is GOLD. In my experience, if an employee were to use this response, it have little to no effect coming from them. We know the ride better than anyone else, but sadly, most of the GP seems to think otherwise. The answer provided comes from someone who has no affiliation with amusement parks whatsoever, so it's hopefully going to have a stronger effect. -

Thanks, Robb! Don't worry, I plan on visiting at least twice a week. The park is literally ten minutes from my house so I should be able to do at least that. In fact, I dropped by again today (nothing's here yet), and at least until the first pieces of track arrive, I see myself visiting daily. So hopefully, I'll be able to have an ongoing log of construction, pics included. But there are none now, obviously because nothing has happened yet...but that should change soon! I also must agree with EastCoastn07 on the passes. Because of KW's location, it could easily become a day-care service. That's why I'm happy the passes are being offered in limited quantities. -

That would be me... Shows how much of a life I have, but I hope to be able to provide semi-regular progress updates once we see work being done. Also of note is that it seems they finally have started digging holes. In other news, the Phantom work looks to be nearing completion, with only some minor welding to be done. -

The logo has been removed from the website. I wonder how long before they officially reveal the name? But I do like the name. -
I am STILL working on a pointless English assignment I started the minute I got home. Assuming I get it done in the next hour, which I highly doubt, I'll have four hours TOPS before I have to get ready to go to school. This is time I ought to be...oh, I don't know... SLEEPING?!?!?! Normally, I would have been to bed two hours ago.

I visited the park on August 11th, which just so happened to be its opening day. It's a good fit for the park, but I wish they could have kept the Ferris Wheel somewhere. I filmed video of it and hopefully I will be able to upload it to Youtube at some point in the near future.

Multiple new members are suddenly posting some sort of chain post thing about herons messing up pots and pans. Without fail, after viewing these posts (which are growing rapidly) my account automatically logs out! IDK if anyone else is experiencing this, and I'm sure the Alveys are working on it, but look out.

Where did the rush go?
Myself replied to skaunit's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Exactly. I love the rush you get from coasters, but I hated the stomach feeling when I was younger and it was what kept me from riding coasters until only a few years ago. -
It is the only one left, but there are a few of Norman Bartlett's other rides left. At least there were as of 2008 (there was a Hurricane ride on Coney Island).

Going to Knoebels...
Myself replied to rockbook2000's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Well, after just having been there myself, I can give you advice on what I got for food (I even had a thread asking about it)... -Cesari's Pizza is a VERY good pizza place, definitely worth a stop. Mind, though, some of the people I went with got pizza from the Oasis stand instead and weren't fond of it, so be careful where you get it. -The pierogies at the "Round Stand" (yes, that's the actual name, according to my map) are delicious. Don't pass them up. -The Mexican section of the International Food Court has Deep Fried Brownies that are a chocolate lover's heaven. -A stand in the kiddie section has AWESOME cheese-on-a-stick. I got the mozzerella, but they also have a hot pepper cheese version. Now, as far as rides go... -Phoenix and Twister are now in my top four wooden coasters (in no real order, the others are Ravine Flyer II and the Thunderbolt). Phoenix was just as great as I was expecting it to be, and for most of the ride I was out of my seat. After riding it, I wasn't expecting as much from the Twister, but it really blew me away. Don't miss either of them. -Kozmo's Kurves is a decent kiddie coaster that is entertaining even for adults. Try to hit it if you can. -Do NOT miss the Skooters by any means. These are the old Lusse cars that move fast and hit hard. People who haven't been on them may be left wondering why they are so great, as was I before the ride, but I honestly have never had so much fun on bumper cars in my life. Make sure you pick up on how to drive them (more sensitive steering; you can't go backwards) quickly or you WILL be victimized, as I saw happen to a few riders (I somehow knew what I was doing). -Don't miss the Flyers either. No other Flying Scooter ride moves quite this fast, and I managed to snap them a lot. Be sure to look for the tractor motor! -The Haunted Mansion is currently my favorite dark ride, and even if you aren't a particular fan of them, you still should ride this one at least once. It is not included in the POP but I still rode it multiple times on my visit. -The Grand Carousel is probably the most beautiful carousel I've seen. If you want to try your luck with the ring machine, move quickly as most of the line will go directly for outside horses. -The Flume is a fun ride as well, and you get a bit wetter than some of the other flumes I've been on. It has a neat tunnel and the final drop is really steep. If you don't want to get wet, you can go to the observation deck and shoot geysers at riders. -The antique cars were neat since they go under the Phoenix. -Unfortunately, I didn't have time for it, but try to ride the 1.5 mile Pioneer Train while you're there. -

The trains actually rotate much more often, about every two weeks or so.
