map2 Posted June 22, 2006 Share Posted June 22, 2006 http://www.screamscape.com/html/las_vegas.htm on screamscape they said something about new trains for manhattan express. when i went on it on november, it was very bumpy. one reason was the restraint system. i was wondering why they have that restraint that secures your shoulders and nothing else. it felt very akward, like my body was not secure. shouldn't the restraints come down to the waist? They are located on the midcourse and the final brake runs which are both isolated areas outdoors on top of the casino. I think the only way to see those would be to go into one of the hotel rooms. Just as a side note, they must be moving pretty fast with this train switch because I was just there last Monday night and they still had the old trains. It's almost a rite of passage in the roller-coaster riding world to get the crap beat out of you by your friendly las-vegas neighborhood togo. I think the rides charm is "Can you handle one of the roughest coasters in existance?" and they should re-market it thus. What teenage boy with his parents/girlfriend/whatever would want to be the one who chickened out, who wasn't "man" enough to handle it. And the ladies would want to prove they can ride it, too, as their just as tough if not tougher than all the little boys riding. haiderodes Posted June 23, 2006 Share Posted June 23, 2006 Well I went down to NYNY last night. It was 109 yesterday so I wasn't about to go right after work...lol. Anyways, no new trains in operation. Just the old ones they modifed with back in 2004 when they added the magnetic brakes. That doesn't mean they dont have the new ones, but if you are familar with NYNY the station and storage area are pretty isolated so the only way to really see anything "good" would be to ride it...i was not about to pay 12.50 to get beat up! What I did notice was that there are magnetic brakes on that last downramp through the casino roof into the station (I thought they were only outside). This makes the re-entry a lot quieter and the catwalks dont vibrate as much. They look like short stationary calipers which seem to interact with the metal fin on the bottom of the cars. There is no wiring or anything to them so I think they were a very simple installation. And one more thing...as rough as this ride is, the crowds still love it cause its big and its on the Strip. They had a decent line for this thing and pretty much each train load was cheering as it entered the unload. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I've ridden it in the very front (not bad whatsoever) and very back (rough, but there are rides that are much worse....cough...Desperado....cough). I rode it in 2001, and had bruises for three weeks after from those Godawful restraints. If they really wanted to improve the ride, replacing it would be a better choice. The ride does'nt bother me so much on the layout it's those darn over the neck restraint system!! If Premier Rides replaced the old TOGO braking system, could they do the same if they made special trains for Manhattan Express? haiderodes Posted June 26, 2006 Share Posted June 26, 2006 I'm not sure if they did a reprofiling, but I do know they gave it a much needed paint job when they installed the new brakes. Bright colors fade fast in this sunlight and heat. What I think is pretty interesting is that over time they have removed most of the theming that the ride once had. When it first opened the queue area was themed as a subway. The tickets were actually tokens that you put into a subway-style turnstyle to enter the queue. It was packed even with them running 4 trains. Now they rarely run more than 2 trains which means a pretty hefty wait even when the line isn't that long. You just kinda enter the queue now and get on. The trains used to have taxi cab theming, but now thats gone. When they added the new brakes they added the flashing LED flames to the sides of the trains, but even those aren't even on anymore. The headlights and tail lights dont even work half the time either. Maybe it is because they want to introduce new trains. I'm thinking even if they do have new trains they might still have OTSRs simply for the fact that it was all those rough transitions in and out of the turns that slam your body side to side. It's a little better themed; hood is more extended and defined, and there are fake tires on the front and back cars. Good news, the bogies are different. A possible July 4th re-opening is scheduled. I cannot confirm the report, due in part that I had lost the link to the news report, but www.screamscape.com has also posted something along the same lines.
