steel Posted June 12, 2006 Posted June 12, 2006 Just recently (I think you were here for this Ernie) we were exiting Raging Bull when these kids behind us JUMPED the fence into the ride area and jumped back into the exit que to catch up with they're friends in front of them. It really shocked me how some people are, and Im sure they werent the first to do that! Luckily, SFGAm has extra chain link fences around the ride areas that come close to the ground. Also, I noticed on Viper that the exit que fence is about 8 feet tall and roofed in some areas because it goes right over and under Raging Bull, pretty smart thinking there. In line for S:UF at CoasterCon, right before ERT on it, these two kids (looked like 9th or 10th grade) hopped the exit fence, walked across, and hopped the fence around the queue right in front of us, paying no attention (this was about ten yards away from the steps to the station). Unfortunately for them, they jumped a line full of ACErs.
calcajun Posted June 13, 2006 Author Posted June 13, 2006 ^ HAHaha!^ That would have been awesome to see a bunch of old queens byching at the two kids!
TheStig Posted June 13, 2006 Posted June 13, 2006 HA!!! I remember that! That was great, I remember a group of ACERs yelling for some reason, then these kids leave the line! Pretty funny! I did get stuck on SUF during ERT for 20 minutes, but hey I got 2 exit passes! Colin C
VegasCoaster Posted June 13, 2006 Posted June 13, 2006 I really could care less about the whole park safety issue. If someone decides to go off the path and then venture into the coaster's direct path, they will be sued, at least in America, so thats their choice. The worst part of someone walking into the coaster would be the negative press as far as I'm concerned. I would to a certain extent mourn the loss of life, but it would be entirely that persons fault, and would make a great Darwin Award. I never quite bought the fact that other countries are smarter than the US, but this would be some evidence that would sway me.
verticalzero Posted June 13, 2006 Posted June 13, 2006 Anyone who works in a Theme Park should be able to speak the native country language, i.e English There should be safety barriers near the track if it goes near ground level. It's common sense not to go near a coaster or any other ride, just like using a crossing on a road or Railroad. You have to be quite dumb to climb or be playing near/on the coaster tracks. It's not the park's fault if someone get's hit as the signs are there about the warnings.
shesaidboom Posted June 13, 2006 Posted June 13, 2006 Honestly, if there's a railing or even a little fence the majority of people know they shouldn't cross it. That's generally what a fence means. If they decide to do it anyway they're being idiots. Parks shouldn't be expected to put up 8+ foot high fences to keep people out. There's a fence or a railing there, it should be enough. Like someone else said already, it's not like you can walk right up to a coaster in the middle of a midway. I actually liked not seeing giant fences everywhere when I was at the park less than two weeks ago, and I didn't feel unsafe..except when I was riding the back seat of Cyclops When I was there they did actually check lap bars on everything, so maybe things are changing?
dougr Posted June 14, 2006 Posted June 14, 2006 it does suprise me that they dont have fences with todays silly "Blame and Claim" society. But i have to agree with everyone else. there is no law for fences... you wouldnt run into the middle of a busy road. and they dont have fences. Yeah, but there are fences on a freeway. Just consider it this way-when you're at work, you'd like all the safety barriers there-why not when you're at play? Not everybody is aware of every hazard-I think it's best for parks to err on the side of caution.
speedracer Posted June 15, 2006 Posted June 15, 2006 Someone mentioned feeling bad for the guest on the train. Thats why it bothered me. Shure i would feel bad for the dummy that woulg go off path and get killed but i would not want to have to see it either and have that memoy. The Top Gun accident is a great example, felt SO bad for the poor woman that had to endure riding an invert that pulls 4Gs in it's helix finale with a broken leg! OUCH!!! http://www.darwinawards.com/darwin/darwin1999-26.html I agree the dum$% got what he deserved, it's the one that kicked him that got jacked. And in the end, regardless of what precautions the park took, they got sued by both parties anyways. Unfortunately parks do need to do whatever they can to protect themselves and their guest from the truly stupid, anything at all they can do to reduce their odds should be done to reduce their liability.
calcajun Posted June 15, 2006 Author Posted June 15, 2006 Having experience working 3 diff departments in parks, including rides, I totally felt safe. Don't care if they don't check my restraints cause i always check my own. It bothered me that a select few others are not safe. Including those that might walk/run up to and climb on exposed ground level coaster track.
Astat Posted June 15, 2006 Posted June 15, 2006 If I ran the world, there would be a "common sense clause" on the books, that you can't sue when somebody dies or gets hurt because of their profound lack of common sense. But alas, I don't rule the world, so sadly the fences and warning signs have to be everywhere I guess.
verticalzero Posted June 15, 2006 Posted June 15, 2006 If you see a barrier which is out of place or anything which looks dangerous in a Theme Park, why not tell a member of staff to see if they can do something about it.
calcajun Posted June 15, 2006 Author Posted June 15, 2006 At Mt Olympus, it is not that barriers are out of place. They are insuficient or non existant.
ECZenith Posted June 15, 2006 Posted June 15, 2006 Seeing panic like that for something so minor just makes me want to move to Europe... By 2010 everyone that passes through a US theme park's gates will be bubble-wrapped and cavity searched to eliminate any and all danger.
rollocoast Posted June 15, 2006 Posted June 15, 2006 ^ I hear ya... Loud and clear... Stupid Americans.
